'24' boss explains new TV movie

A new two-hour 24 television movie will act as a prequel to the delayed seventh season.

The show's executive producer Howard Gordon told IF Magazine: "This will be a standalone movie that takes place almost a year after the sixth season ended, and will set up the story that launches the seventh season. It will be entirely new material."

Jack Bauer was originally due to return to screens in January for an uninterrupted run of episodes, but only eight were filmed before the writers' strike caused the production to temporarily shut down. Fox opted to withhold the episodes until January 2009, to allow time for the remaining 16 to be produced.

The 24 television movie will reportedly be screened in the autumn.

Fox reveals '24' movie details
Friday, May 16 2008, 16:50 BST

By Ben Rawson-Jones, Cult Editor

Fox has released details of the forthcoming 24 television movie, which will serve as a prequel to the delayed seventh season of the real-time show.

The broadcaster has stated that the two-hour special, which has been shot on location in South Africa, features Jack Bauer battling an "international crisis" while America is to have a new President to follow Wayne Palmer.

24's executive producer Howard Gordon stated: "We're excited about the prequel because it explores Jack's complex emotional state of mind and still has all the signature excitement and suspense that fans have come to expect from 24. Shooting in South Africa affirms everyone's commitment to making this season especially memorable for our fans."

The movie will be shown on Sunday, November 23, ahead of the seventh season's debut in January 2009. Eight episodes were originally filmed for broadcast at the start of 2008, but the advent of the writers' strike caused delays and the producers were adamant that all 24 episodes must be shown without a long hiatus.

Robert Carlyle will play Jack Bauer's mentor and friend in the upcoming two-hour 24 movie.

The film - setting the scene for season seven - will see Jack Bauer handling a crisis in Africa while the US is inaugurating a new president. The Scottish Full Monty actor will fight alongside Bauer as character Benton.

Three other 24 castings were also announced this week by Fox.

Tony Todd, who plays the CIA director in Chuck, will take the role of cruel African dictator General Juma. He will also appear in season seven, starting in January.

Also cast to the prequel film, scheduled to air on November 23 in the US, is Eric Lively (The L Word) as the new president's son.

Gil Bellows (Ally McBeal) will play a State Department officer charged with summoning Bauer to appear before the Senate.
