Title: Star Fleet R2

At long, long last. Fabulous Films have been awarded the UK distribution rights for a DVD release of the show by international rights holder Enoki.
From memory, I think that these are the same people that are releasing The Mysterious Cities of Gold next month!

Woo hoo!
Although I’ve had it on CD for a few years and still not managed to watch it all, so whether I’ll fare any better with an official version is anybody’s guess. ;)
Do you know if it’s the full version, or based on the American version which was 3 episodes mashed into each hour?

I think, repeat think, I read that they were releasing all 24 episodes, which makes it sound as though it's not the American 'condensed' versions.
If the MCOG release is anything to go by then hopefully we'll be able to look forward to a 'complete' boxset release, rather than splitting the series over a number of volumed releases. The MCOG episodes were also remastered for release. I'm not entirely sure that that will be feasible for Star Fleet, I'm not sure that the original film actually exists still.
Either way, I'm sure that the DVD quality will be better than the VCDs we currently have!

Well, I picked up my copy of MCOG today, and inside there's a 'coming soon' leaflet. Star Fleet's there and it's listed as 'the entire series', which encourages me to think that it's the individual episodes that we had in the 80s rather than the cobbled together American versions.
Anyway, no date on the leaflet, but a quick check on HMV's website states the release to be 25th August. Hurrah!
Got Ulysses, MCOG, Transformers, Battle of the Planets and Thundercats, and when Star Fleet comes out I think that'll be my 80s nostalgia collection pretty much complete!
EDIT: It looks very much like it's the episodic release, as HMV provide an episode guide on the relevant webpage, and it's all 24 episodes. Hope there's some decent extras like with the MCOG release!

Received an e-mail from Fabulous Films today.
Apparently, it IS the 24 individual episodes, and not the 8 x edited film versions that were released on VHS in the States.
The sound and picture HAVE been remastered, which I can't wait to see! My VCD copies are well worn and the picture's really suffering on them. Having had a look at the recently released remastered MCOG, they've done a pretty good job on the picture there, the colours are a lot more vibrant.
I asked about extras as well, and they have an interview lined up with Go Nagai, creator of the original X-Bomber in Japan.
Really, really can't wait for this one now.

| This wonderful and fondly remembered TV show has never been released in English language on DVD anywhere in the world, Fabulous Films will premiere this DVD for the first time ever during 2008. The actual release date hasn't yet been confirmed, although some retailers have dates up on there site. However, we'll do our best to get it out as soon as possible but with our best attention to detail. If anyone has ever watched the Japanese DVD box set, you would have noticed just how shocking the picture quality is. Over at Fabulous Films we are currently restoring the picture quality and sound. A fairly hefty and lengthy process, but we hope to be able to bring you the best restoration for your full viewing enjoyment. In the meantime, as part of our commitment to bring you a true collectors item, we are really pleased and honoured to announce that we will be interviewing the legendary Manga author and creator of the SFXB TV series Go Nagai in Japan next month. If you have any questions you'd like us to present to Go Nagai, please let us know. Please email us your questions for Go Nagai or comments before MAY 10th 2008. Other really exciting news just in.. we have secured an interview with the "master of supermarionation", the man himself Gerry Anderson. We're interviewing him at Pinewood studios on MAY 6th, so if you have any questions or comments for Gerry Anderson please email us by MONDAY MAY 5th. The more feedback we get from you about the project the better the product will shape up. We'll do our best to include as much as we can or we're allowed ! We hope to be able to announce other participants for the extra content interviews soon, fingers crossed we're hopeful of getting Brian May and Paul Bliss ! so stay tuned for more information. Thank you Star Fleet X-Bomber On DVD SOON! |
The Gerry Anderson interview is a great idea. Given the similarities between Star Fleet and Anderson's shows I can't wait to hear his thoughts on Star Fleet, I can't ever remember him talking about it before.
