Jack calls in an old friend for a favour, none other than Martha Jones.

Since it's getting it's première tonight on BBC 3 following Adam on BBC2 :)

Nice to see Martha. And nice to have all those references back to The Sound of Drums and Last Of The Timelords as well. She fit in really well with the team, with her discussion with Ianto the standout. They dabble in an innovative way *g*.

It's nice to see that Owen really was oblivious last week in his conversation with Tosh. And they have a date, yay! Who'd have thought I'd want to see Tosh/Owen?

Owen!!!!!!!! I really wish I hadn't been spoiled for that! And what follows. I imagine that I would have cried if I didn't know it was coming.

Not really a spoiler, but as it came from the trailer for 2x07... (concerns a character's age)
Owen's 27? I thought he would have been early 30s?

prophecy girl - February 14, 2008 10:18 AM (GMT)
:o :tear: owen just when tosh and him finally agree on a date

 martha, jack and martha having a talk (you miss him? no ok sometime a little but then i come back to reality  ) and then gwen trying to get a bit of info

it's a two parts episode, isn't it?

I didn`t spoil for this and still haven`t `cos I`ve no idea what you`re talking about - thankfully I wasn`t paying too much attention to the trailer. Please leave me in my ignorance.

Owen dying was a total shock. I couldn`t believe they got rid of him. :o :o

All the ep seemed to be about poor Martha, we need to rescue her, blah, blah, and I did wonder if she was getting bumped off.

Thought Martha was an excellent addition - she`s all bouncy and enthusiastic, and when she had scenes with Gwen, she seems to lift the whole, erm scene - it made it obvious quite how slowly Gwen speaks.

I did think that Tosh was less Tosh-y and Owen less Owen-y in this ep - the result of the Adam stuff ? :ponder:

Anyone know why there was a quick shot of a newspaper with that Slitheen Mayor, just before Martha pushed open the door to see Ianto for the first time ?

prophecy girl - February 15, 2008 11:05 AM (GMT)
maybe it's an old article and they never thought of taking it off

and anyway did anyone mention to torchwood who/what was really the mayor?

I thought it was just a nice in-joke between the two shows like the Doctor's 3D Glasses in Jack's office.

Martha Jones worked really well here, she really bonded with the Torchwood team, and I liked the use of her theme from Who. A girly chat with Gwen, someone with medical knowledge to banter with Owen, and a cute wee chat with Ianto about his relationship with Jack.

Ianto: We dabble.
Martha: What's his dabbling like?
Ianto: Innovative. Almost avant garde. Oh yeah.

. Really liking chatty, more confident Ianto.

Loads of Who references in this episode, probably my favourite has to be the newspaper article from Boom Town.

A nice chat between Martha and Jack about missing the Doctor. They both left of their own free will but of course they still miss him. And he apparently got Martha her job, though part of me wants her to join Torchwood permanently.

Ianto is not pleased with Owen, why do I have a feeling Owen's experiments have gone wrong around him before?
When he delivers his message to Jack about the victim in the hospital I couldn't stop thinking about those mission things on the BBC website since it sounded just like one of those.

The producers on this show must really like Damon Albarn, first Song 2 in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and then Gorillaz in Reset.

Did anyone else find it really odd that Owen and Martha didn't rush to try and resuscitate the girl in the hospital?

Owen accepts Tosh's offer of a date. Aww, now who would have thought I'd like to see Owen/Tosh? And apparently he was just being clueless in Meat and not just brushing her off.

"You are warped on the inside" heh.

Owen! Oh Owen. If I didn't know it was coming I'd be in tears watching. I cry all the time at stuff like this.

For some reason, I thought it was a current newspaper. :ph43r:

Mystery solved.

Ooh, I loved the avant garde line, too.

I didn`t notice a delay in the ( lack of ) resuscitation bit ; maybe it`s more obvious when you rewatch it ?

I thought Gwen`s expression when Owen died was a bit odd ; I expected more in the way of emoting from the caring one. ;)

The Whoniverse timeline messes with my mind so maybe it is current? I see them wanting to make the "tourist office" as uninviting as possible, including Ianto's 'not interested' attitude when they come in, so I guessed that having an old newspaper article on the door would feed into that maybe.

I just expected them to rush to try and bring her back rather than just staring at her, just seemed rather odd

I put that down to complete and utter shock. You can just freeze up when something like that happens. If the shot had been a little longer I'd expect to hear the screams and crying.

TV Crazy - February 17, 2008 09:04 PM (GMT)
Is that really the end of Owen? I suppose i should've guessed something was gonna happen when he agreed to go on a date, but that's more of a whedonverse thing when a couple finally get together, one of them dies.

It's sci-fi, maybe they'll bring him back at some point.

Good episode, Torchwood seems to be getting better. Looking forward to the next part(s) of the episode.

jamiearmour - February 20, 2008 03:55 PM (GMT)
I knew it. Finally, Torchwood has a medic on board who doesn't make me want to throw up.

Sorry to the Owen lovers out there, but he really P*ssed me off in Season one, and he hasn't really done anything to redeem himself in season 2.

It was obvious from the moment he arranged his date with Tosh that his number was up, it's the laws of tv/movies, make plans for the future before going into a dangerous situation and you'll end up dead.

Oh and hello again everyone. I'm back.....

Owen really annoyed me in S1 too but I think he's improved a lot this season. I wouldn't want him to be too nice though. As soon as anyone agrees on a date with Tosh it's the end for them

Fangy and grrr - February 20, 2008 10:46 PM (GMT)
Hmm not sure why but I was a bit disappointed with this episode. :(

I think maybe I was looking forward to Martha's appearence a bit too much and was relying on her presence to really lift the show and while it was nice to see her and there were some nice moment's that made me smile overall I found it a bit flat.

I didn't know Owen was going to cop it ( although in hindsight maybe this was why Inato started getting a bit more bad ass ) and while I guess I'm sorry I can't say I'm that bothered.

I do seem to be in the minority though don't I ? :)

Hello again to you too

Hmm. I'm having a bit of shouldhaveguesseditis now. Suddenly we have a spare medic on board, suddenly he's Mr Notverynicebutanimprovement. But no, honest guv, I was very shocked.

How many more episodes are going to feature the stoppages of bad nasty abuse of innocent aliens? Time for a gear change I think.

J.C. Wilsher discusses how he approached writing Reset.

How did you get into writing?
I was a failed academic. I had a research job with Lancaster University, monitoring the impact of the then new Brewery Arts Centre on the community in Kendal. I got involved with some of the theatrical projects the local amateur company were doing - my biggest part was Bill Sykes in Oliver, followed by front end of the pantomime horse - and I wrote some material for a cabaret act three of us got together. People with professional theatre experience gave me encouragement to write, so when the research job came to an end, I gave it a go. I was fortunate enough to sell my first radio play, and then a television play.

What inspired the 'Mayfly' alien?
I wanted something that was a lethal parasite from a human point of view, but in itself an innocent and rather appealing creature - which we realise by the end is itself an exploited victim. An insect that grew from a parasitic larva into something alarmingly big seemed to do the job.

What influences did you draw on for the story?
The way it worked out, there are obvious touches of Alien about it, though I didn't think about that at the outset. There's a story by Algis Budrys in which aliens accidentally bring a virus to Earth, and end up being penned up and used as a source of the vaccine, which stuck in my mind.

Many people will know you primarily as a crime writer for some of the UK's most successful police dramas. How did you find the transition into the realm of science fiction writing?
I've always been a reader of science fiction, and I dabbled a bit in a couple of single plays - a TV play about a near-future community in which everyone was under surveillance (Sin With Our Permission) and a radio play about the Space Shuttle (Orbital Decay). I suppose one characteristic of what people call "genre fiction" is that it depends on a strong narrative line, that's true in sci-fi and police dramas, and I always like to feel that people are pulled along by wanting to know what happens next.

What's your favourite line in the episode?
MARTHA: (TRYING THE COMMUNICATING CONTACT LENSES) I'm a camera!

JACK: As Chris Isherwood said to me, as we cruised the Kurfurstendamm.

The Making Of's this week are a wee chat with Alan Dale (Prof. Copley), a chat with cating director Andy Prior, a chat with composer Ben Foster and a look at the launch of the online game.

Jack and Ianto's inboxes are updated with an email each regarding Martha's visit.

This weeks website casefile includes Martha's UNIT assessment, a report about the disintigrator thing, background on Copley, Martha's pass, a scan of the Mayfly and the Pharm screensaver.

And this weeks mission has a shocked and upset Ianto and no Tosh. I like how they link the videos back to the episode it relates to.

after rewatching the episode, it look like the doctor (at first I thought it was jack) took the time to contact Unit to recommend Martha, but after everything that happened in doctor who, i would have thought she would have refused the job: i mean apart the fact that they don't go back and forth in time and in different worlds, she still end up in trouble with torchwood

She's still interested in studying alien life so it makes sense to take a job with U.N.I.T. That way she can stay close to her family and stay out of danger (though obviously the taste for adventure isn't diminished considering her actions in Reset).

I'm with Jamie on this one Owen was arrogant who had very little to recommend him yet everyone seemed to liked him for some reason. Why did he let Jack talk to Copley he's immortal so after all but no Owen thinks he knows better. I don't think Owen was interested in Tosh just surprised she asked him out and thought a drink wouldn't hurt. I'm not sorry to see him gone sorry Owen fans having Martha replace him great idea.
