An alien with the power to change memories infiltrates Torchwood, can the team save themselves before it's too late? With Captain Jack caught up in memories of his lost family, and Gwen struggling to remember Rhys, it takes Jack's love of Ianto to reveal the truth. But there's always a price to pay.
Dir: Andy Goddard

Trailer here Ianto looks absolutely terrifying at the 10-11 second mark :fear: :o (knew they couldn't keep him all nice and happy, I'm guessing that this is the episode with his "I'm a monster" line that was in the trailer as that seemed to be the same alley he was stalking the woman down here)

You can see a 1 min 32sec scene here (Jack and the title character talk about another character mentioned in 2x01)

2x06 will air directly after this episode on BBC Three in what they're saying is a one-off. They apparently use the term "scheduling experiment" according to SFX

the BBC probably think there will be audience, there will be if they make a teaser about the 2.6 guest star

It's the "experiment" aspect of it that I find :lol:worthy. Showing the next episode on the digital channel directly after the show on an analogue channel isn't exactly new. Plus they were doing that with S1 anyway . I'll definetly be watching on BBC Three even though I know I'll be waiting two weeks for 2x07 (which I am so unbelievably spoiled for ), I have no patience.

The BBC site is loaded up with pics from 2x05. Only three of them (well two really), and not spoilery unless you don't want to see the guest star.

This week (BBC Two, Thursday 7th February 7.50pm*) Torchwood Declassified is back behind-the-scenes to witness the making of memories.

There's havoc in The Hub as an alien intruder plays mind tricks with the Torchwood team, but as always the Declassified cameras are on hand to reveal the truth.

Talking to star of the show John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness), writer Catherine Tregenna and episode director Andy Goddard, Torchwood Declassified explores the revelations of Jack's past and looks at the visual effects team's work on this most memorable of episodes.
Captain Jack being filmed on the beach

Plus, Gareth David-Lloyd (Ianto Jones) and executive producer Russell T Davies comment on Ianto's unforgettable role in Torchwood's latest alien adventure.

Looking forward to tonight`s double ep.

Immediate reaction, more when I've rewatched.

How adorable was shy!Owen? Just huggable. And a chance to see the Tosh/Owen dynamic from a different side. However, confindent!Tosh was just horrible. Nothing to do with the acting or writing but just knowing how sweet she is it was just so odd to see her so mean.

Ianto! Oh, Ianto. Ianto as a serial killer was chilling, even knowing that it wasn't real and that these memories had been forced on him it was still scary. I loved that Jack knew Ianto wouldn't do it and that's what started the investigation. And Ianto Jones' Diary hee! "Measuring tapes don't lie" and the wee blush

Nice interaction between Rhys and the team this week as well. I'll be really happy if they continue along these lines with him.

prophecy girl - February 14, 2008 10:32 AM (GMT)
the teaser with jack saying "the 21st century is when everything change" with some Adam shots added in the middle (maybe just me but i thought "Superstar" sure it was a bit different because alien guy changed the memory by touching people)

an interesting episode, we learn a bit more about jack's youth in the 25th century, so gray is his brother and he lost him while running from monster (so john telling jack about finding gray, does that mean he found him alive? i hope there will be more in the future)

i was expecting something longer for ianto turning serial killer (but the BBC would have probably been unable to show most of the episode  ) but even for the bit filmed ianto was a bit scary ......... just because he kept a diary ( :ph43r: at jack "measuring tape never lie" :naughty: )

just wonder, the team took a memory pill but what about Rhys, won't he ask about Adam?

 shy Owen  but telling tosh afterward that he don't do flower or apology :ermm:

gwen admitting to jack that she love him but not the same way as Rhys and jack telling her that he know while giving her the memory pill

Thought the Ianto stuff was done really well ; the way the dark street was intercut with the Hub, plus how good the acting was from Gareth D-L.

I wondered about the Rhys/Adam stuff, but I think there was something about Adam needing to be remembered by touching someone and he didn`t get to touch Rhys.

Hmm, with the cut kiddies versions, what happens when those DVDs come out and the youngsters are clamouring for the eps ?

I suppose they could do that thing where they integrate cut scenes into the ep as an easter egg thing.

prophecy girl - February 14, 2008 07:30 PM (GMT)
and won't rhys ask gwen about the memory loss or he won't care as gwen had a full memory of him back? :ponder:

Laura - February 14, 2008 07:46 PM (GMT)
Well that was much better than last weeks episode imo.

Again it's a more character-driven episode rather than being all about the action so it'll always appeal to me. And we get canon AU versions of our heroes so yay!

This Owen was brilliant. Burn Gorman is a fantastic actor and he can sell anything, and geek!Owen was just so huggable.
The role-reversal with Owen and Tosh worked really well with Owen's defensive cynicism stripped away and showing and awkward shy person underneath, and Tosh gaining the confidence that she's always been lacking. Though I just couldn't help but wince at how the team treated this version of Owen, mocking him and his crush on Tosh. And the scene in the boardroom had some nice nods back to the Owen that we know. It reminded me of his line to Gwen in Countrycide with "we'd be amazing" appearing in both. And then at the end once they've forgotten his unknowing rejection of Tosh "in your dreams" again made me wince.

Since we hear so much about how Gwen is the humanising influence and about how her relationship with Rhys grounds her it's interesting to see how she is without that. I really felt for Rhys, he finally finds out what Gwen really does and then she doesn't know who he is at all. It's nice to see that they do have that connection without her memories.

There was a lot of Ianto winking in this episode
Tosh: You keep entries about alient artifacts in your diary?
Ianto: Among other things.

A nice upbeat Ianto before we get the horrible breakage later on. Gareth David-Lloyd was really good as the distraught Ianto who thought he had killed those women, he was quite scary. Even knowing that these memories had been forced on him it was very chilling. I noticed that the BBC cut out Ianto's "I killed three women" line from the trailer for this episode on the kiddie friendly repeat so I've no idea how they're going to handle his story in the pre-watershed showing.

More of a glimpse into Jack's past, and it's a nice touch that we never hear him referred to by name since we know that Jack isn't his own name. We know that Jack is missing two years of his memories from back when he left the Time Agency so it makes sense that he would be the one who would be so affected by his own memories. We find out a little more about the Grey who was mentioned at the end of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang but I doubt it'll be the last we hear about him. Wonder if he'll end up as a big bad at the end of the season? It's nice to see that Jack's belief in Ianto is what finally sets him into investigative mode to uncover Adam too.

It's a lovely insight into what makes the team tick as well. We all knew that it's Gwen's relationship with Rhys that has so much of an impact on her, though that "not like I love you, Jack" line was a bit odd. Tosh just wanting someone to love her for who she is. Owen's crap childhood explains a lot about who he grew up to be, and that he just can't save enough people. And Ianto's love and loss of Lisa made him who she is. So many people seem to have assumed that Ianto's just forgotten about her since we didn't see what happened between him and Jack last year but this shows that he didn't. He still obviously misses her immensly but that his job, and Jack, have given him the strength to keep going.
Couldn't help but think that Ianto is going to wake up with a sore neck

* Nice touch adding a couple of clips of Adam into the intro for the show. Very Superstar.
* Are Torchwood sponsored by Nokia N series phones? We see a lot of Gwen's N95 and then there's a big shot of Jack using the N90 to video Rhys.
* I'm guessing that this is the episode that the Jack/Ianto kiss that was mentioned in John Barrowman's autobiography was from?

"In one of the early episodes of the second series, Ianto has a breakdown in the Hub one night, for reasons far too complicated to go into here, but if you've seen it, you'll know...While Jack comforts Ianto, he shifts from innocent consolation to a full-on, passionate embrace and kiss."

I'm assuming that they're not going to have another Ianto breakdown, and it's now halfway through the season, so I'm assuming it was cut.

* "And for the record: measuring tapes never lie."
*silently* "****". Hee. I love the fact that in the Torchwood mission thing online they have the diary in front of Ianto as he's doing his wee intro bit.

The BBC site has the epsode casefiles updated. This week it includes a note from Ianto telling people to keep away from investigating the memory loss, a pamphlet on mind control, Ianto's diary.

The making ofs include John Barrowman and Bryan Dick (Adam) on location in some fetching headgear and an interview with the shows still photographer.

It never occured to me that having Adam in the titles had anything to do with the story plot. I have just got into this iplayer lark the BBC are offering, I missed watching it last night and I wasn't sure if the repeat today would be cut any. The next episode with Freema Agyeman was up on the bbc site so I ended up watching that too!

The cuts for this episode were (from what I could see):

-Gwen threatening Rhys with the knife
-Bits of Ianto's killing spree are obviously cut, including the bit where Adam helps him dump the bodies.
-Tosh reaching for Adam's belt in the scene in Tosh's bedroom
-Most of Ianto and Jack's conversation in Jack's office. We get "my hands around her neck", "it reads as truth" and "she tried to get away...something in me wants to kill". Strangely the line "and it felt so good" was cut yet remained in the trailer last week but the line "I killed three girls" was cut from the trailer but was kept in the episode.
-the "measuring tapes never lie" line was still in as was Ianto 'oh no' reaction but the "****" was cut.

Best episode since the opening one. :)

Nice touch including Adam in the titles and I have to admit that Inato was quite good in this episode. Wasn't sure why Tosh and in particular Owen were so different though ?

prophecy girl - February 17, 2008 05:35 PM (GMT)
Tosh did say to neird Owen that he wasn't her type of guy, maybe adams was just making sure that tosh was not going to be distracted by Owen while dating him :ponder:

It's the Owen/Tosh relationship mirrored. Owen doesn't see Tosh as his type, he hardly notices her in any way other than as a work colleague (until he's put in the position where she pretty much goes 'look I fancy you in the next episode).

I've just watched this episode I know I'm falling behind  just had chance to watch this episode by far the best episode of season 2 so far. As people have said very like Superstar which I love not just because it helped me graduate uni but that that's a different story anyway cross Superstar with "Legion" a Red Dwarf episode but it's very much darker then both of these.

Owen now nerd I felt sorry for him as he's not butt of the team's jokes until the end of episode when crushes Tosh by telling her he would never send her flowers I can't decide whether he's just being cruel or he for some reason hasn't worked she is interested?

When Adam give Ianto the false memories about murdering three women that sitting in rain screaming then later when Jack puts him in front of the lie detector believe them to be true he re-lives and enjoys them. :fear: A great piece of acting by Gareth.

I wonder if Adam took Owen's charisma for want of a better way of to put it to form basis for his own personality or just simple because he decided he didn't like him? :ponder:
