Title: 1.21 Bone To Be Wild

willowroolz - July 26, 2004 12:10 PM (GMT)
Moya is hiding in an asteroid field to avoid being scanned by Crais's command carrier. As the scan passes Pilot picks up a distress call from a nearby asteroid.

Crais, furious that Moya has not been found, wants to enter the asteroid field to continue the search. Scorpius intervenes, suggesting that he bombard the area with signals to try and make the offspring panic and reveal itself, guessing that the leviathan will not abandon her child...

This is a very strange episode. I liked some of it, and hated the rest. *cough* doublemeat palace *cough*

I loved Aeryn's bonding with the baby, very sweet, very Close Encounters, but I hated the stuff on the planet. Seriously freaky alien designs. Didn't love the story, except the nice little twist at the end, when Scorpius and co land on the planet.

Zhaan's a plant

that explains a lot actually ;)

There was a time when I would have echoed Lisa's thoughts almost to the letter, but I must admit that the more I see this episode the more I like it. I think it suffers in comparison to the previous two episodes - there's definitely a desire to shout at the writers to get back to the fallout from the events that have just passed - and also because it tells three so distinctly separate stories.

On the one hand we have the main story, down on the planet surface, which probably doesn't have enough meat on it (excuse the bad joke  ) to fill the full 48 minutes but is well told and quite scary, even if it does throw in a few too many twists.

On the other hand we have the ongoing threads of Moya's offspring and the developing feud between Scorpius and Crais. Wayne Pygram and Lani Tupu are, once again, riveting in this episode. I love the scene where Crais walks into his quarters only to find Scorpius sitting on his "throne", and the scene where he and Scorpius fight. Scorpy ups the danger element of the series just by walking on screen, but when his voice changes it only hints at what he really is.

Oh, and BIG "YAY!" to the arrival of David Franklin as Lt Braca.

What can I say about Claudia Black in this episode? She spends most of her time on her own and she absolutely commands your attention. I've probably said it before, but I can't think of any other actress who can convey so much just with her eyes. Her expression when Pilot voices Moya's wish for her to name the offspring is just wonderful.

I always seem to spend half of this episode getting freaked out when Br'Nee's second mouth moves  . But M'Lee is very well realised and succeeds in making me jump on more than one occasion. It's a shame that you can see the join in the makeup at Francesca Buller's throat so easily, but apart from that she is very alien. In fact she makes a habit of that. If memory serves she is the only actor that appears in all four seasons of the show playing a different character each time. This isn't her best role, in the show's terms at least, but she is good.

And, for those who don't know, Francesca Buller is an English actress who just happens to be Ben Browder's wife ;)

Thumbs up to the production designers of the show, who always give it a lived in, "used" look that is such a change from the shiny futuristic looks to be found elsewhere. Sometimes you feel dirty just looking at the environments.

Finally, a mention for director Andrew Prowse whose visual style manages to make a weird episode seem even more strange with the use of off-kilter camera angles and inventive framing. The show has most definitely found its own visual style by this point, even if it becomes more trippy as it progresses.

So, all in all, a good episode but, in light of recent and future events, one that has to be considered as a pause for breath before the season finale.

Steve, I totally agree with you about Claudia Black. It's remarkable the emotions she conveys to the role, without even saying anything. I'm not keen on this episode, but I loved her scenes with and about the offspring.

I've noted your comments about the ep. Is it one of those, that gets better on a second
watch?

It did for me, Lisa, but that is just me!

I'm a big fan of Farscape's quirkiness: I love the more serious episodes like Nerve and The Hidden Memory, but then I find that the episodes that do the mad stuff contribute hugely to what makes it so unique. Some are more successful at it than others, without a doubt. I can't wait to find out what you think of Scratch 'n' Sniff in season 3!

Bone To Be Wild kind of falls between the two stools though, it's neither here nor there, and it definitely doesn't work as well as others do.

You might view it more favourably than Doublemeat Palace, though, after seeing the first three of four episodes of season 2, cos a couple of them are absolute stinkers!

Actually, and it'd be interesting to find out whether you all agree with this in the next few weeks (or now, in Karen's case ;) ), I think that once the writers hit on the big ongoing stories it took them a while to find the right balance between stand alone and arc episodes. That leads to the beginning of the second season seeming a bit unbalanced to me. In fact all the seasons seem to do a bit of experimentation to start off with before settling down for amazing finales.

What I want to know is where is Stark?

And was that really Marton Csokas under all that makeup as Br'Nee

Um... I remember putting this episode on, and I remember the aliens with teeth, and something baout the baby, but sadly that's it :(

Is it worth my rewatching it right now, or should I leave it until I've seen all the series? :)

willowroolz - October 30, 2004 09:43 AM (GMT)
There are a couple of references to it in the following episode. It's not crucial, but it'd be more worth missing out a couple of the early season 2 episodes, which are truly dreadful :)

I agree with Lisa on this one.

The episode's two stories; the first of which, the situation in the asteroid field is fascinating. Whether it be Aeryn aboard Moya's baby ship, or whether it's Crais and Scorpius' posturing aboard the Carrier. The second story, on the asteroid is woeful, which is a shame, because anykind of secondary story of value would have made this a great episode.

M'Lee just looked freaky to begin with, and to be honest, if it were me who'd landed, I'd have taken one look at her, seen how creepy she was and started shooting !!

As far as the makeup goes, again, the asteroid-bound aliens left a lot to be desired, and generally it's probably the aspect of the series I dislike the most, in fact, it's pretty much the only thing I dislike at this point. I'll put that down to them still only being in season one, and I'll assume the prosthetics get better as the series goes on

I also find myself echoing Steve's and Lisa's sentiments regarding Claudia Black's performance in this one. Outstanding.

The FX of Moya in the asteroid field is also worthy of mention as well, particularly towards the beginning of the episode.

I don't really want to rewatch this one again as I really don't like it. It is one of my least favourite episodes possibly because it is inbetween such good episodes it suffers more.

M'Lee gets on my nerves as does Br'Nee. Sorry its another characters of Francesca's that I don't like.

The Moya storyline is good and a shame that they didn't just concentrate on this.

I did find that funny
