Title: Dollhouse
Description: Joss Whedon's Series!

buffy_fan1 - February 5, 2008 12:34 AM (GMT)
I thought it was time Dollhouse had a thread of it's own to post about what I'm hoping will be a hit for Joss Whedon.

February's SFX Magazine out now has interview with Joss about how the series came about and themes and ideas involved. It's quite short but worth it if only for the photo of Eliza.

Veronica Mars star Michael Muhney wants to be a Doll

On the bright side, I don’t have to leave my newborn baby for Chicago and fly home every other weekend. And one other little tidbit…there’s this writer/director/show runner that I have wished for years to work with, and now I’m available and he’s got a new show to put together. Believe me, if there is a chance in Hell, I’ll be the first one hunting around Hell for that chance. Working with Joss Whedon would be making a very sugary, spiked lemonade out of lemons. Joss Whedon - "Dollhouse" Tv Series - He has begun the writing
Dollhouse

According to the Los Angeles Times, The chairman of 20th Century Fox Television says :

"Joss Whedon is now busy writing both the pilot script and scenes for auditions for the ’Dollhouse’ Tv Series."

I know that was bit short and there's is not a lot information here but it seemed important hence the post.

PS Joss I'm available call me!

Variety suggests that FOX may premiere the series in Fall 2008, with the early production providing enough lead time to allow a full (22-episodes) season to be aired uninterrupted by breaks.

Seth Green "offered his services" to Joss for Dollhouse? So says The Courier-Mail out of Australia. It's entirely unclear if this simply is at the same level as Michael Muhney saying he'd love to be involved.

just wonder if we are going to end up with the complete cast of buffy  :ponder:

Well we all know Joss likes to work with actors he knows and trusts so it wouldn't surprise me if we saw a familiar faces or two but I think it's more likely to be for example people like Carlos Jacott or Jonathan M. Woodward rather then an A list Buffy/Angel/Firefly star as I'd have thought he'd want wait until Dollhouse has it's own identity before inviting the big names on? :ponder: That is unless one or more "A listers" is going to be a regular? At the end of the day this all guess work on my part and who am I to question the great Joss Whedon!

One other piece of small piece of news it's not worth a post on it's own but as I'd already written one it could go on the end it seems tvguide.com think it will ready for Fall as the American's say.

"Dollhouse" Tv Series - Will Fox give it a chance ?

Question : As we all know, our dearly beloved Joss Whedon is returning to Fox this fall with his new show Dollhouse, starring Eliza Dushku. While it’s a bit too early to speculate on whether it’s going to be a success (critically or otherwise), I’m still interested in what you think about how patient Fox will be if the show does not become a hit right away. Fox has canceled some pretty good shows quickly in the past (including the amazing Wonderfalls), but it seemed like the network was more patient with Eliza Dushku’s Tru Calling and Joss Whedon’s Firefly than with other shows. Although both shows only attracted mediocre ratings, they at least kept them on for half a season (or in Tru Calling’s case even a little bit longer than a full season). It was as if they were waiting for them to become sleeper hits despite their horrible time slots. Also, Firefly proved that Fox can make a lot of money with Joss Whedon’s shows, even if short-lived. DVDs of the show are still selling. Might Fox be more patient with Dollhouse than with other shows because it knows that Whedon has a strong fan base that can bring them an awful lot of money, or will the network treat it just like every other show ? Also, I’m curious how you see Fox scheduling the show. I for one hope it won’t be on Friday nights. Fox has a lot of mystery/sci-fi themed shows in development (Fringe, The Oaks, Dollhouse) and on the air (Terminator, New Amsterdam), and I’m wondering whether Fox is going to become the sci-fi/animated network, just like ABC became the female-centered network, CBS the crime network and NBC the offbeat, "we’re not so mainstream" network.— Donnie

Matt Roush : Never too early to obsess, is it ? Joss Whedon’s return to TV is without doubt big news, but I would be surprised if Fox’s expectations go much beyond a cult sensation, which these days ought to be enough. Could Dollhouse break out the way Heroes and Lost did in their first seasons, or Alias did in the media ? Let’s hope. If the show is as good as the buzz is over the pilot script, I’d think Fox would do everything it can to ensure it gets maximum exposure. Which means not scheduling it in a Friday death slot, and which absolutely means being patient. As you rightly note, there’s incredible potential in the merchandising marketplace for anything Joss touches, so it’s in everyone’s best interests to do right by this one. As for Fox’s brand identity, it seems to me that landing a sci-fi/fantasy hit has been a priority since The X-Files signed off six years ago. It’s just easier said than done. But if anyone can do it, Joss can.

Buffy Alums Circling Joss Whedon's "Dollhouse" Tv Series
Dollhouse

Eliza Dushku may be bunking with some old friends when she moves into Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse next season. According to multiple sources, several Buffyverse grads are being considered for the eight supporting roles now being cast.

Whedon confirmed this unbelievably fraktacular turn of events moments before taking the stage at Paley Fest’s Buffy tribute last Thursday. "I’ve read a couple of people [from the Buffyverse]," he told me, "but I’m not going to say who."

Although this would seem to contradict comments the Buffy master made to me last fall, in which he said that his "first instinct is to probably [cast] new people because I’m already reuniting with Eliza and I don’t want it to seem like a house party," Whedon insists his position hasn’t changed.

"It’s not a hard and fast rule," clarifies the auteur, who just completed penning Dollhouse’s one-hour premiere. "I just want to make sure I get the right people. And I don’t want to give the impression that it’s just me and my friends having a party. Some [Buffyverse alums] might work out fine. But I’m not going to just seek out people that I already know are great. That would be lazy."

You know what I say ? There’s nothin’ wrong with being lazy if it means Whedon reuniting with the likes of James Marsters, Charisma Carpenter and Julie Landau. Of course, that’s not to say they’re the Buffyverse vets in the running for Dollhouse. That’s not to say they aren’t either. See how I protected myself there ?

What Buffyverse stars would you like to see populate Dollhouse ? Or do you think Whedon should trust his first instinct and surround Dushku with newbies ? Those are the questions that need answering. By you. Below.

Well I'm sure you can all guess which Buffy star I would like to see Dollhouse ;) I think it's good that he has left the door open as at the end of the day there is a reason why they were part of the Buffyverse they all great actors and there is no sense to rule them out just because he is worried about how it will look.

The last watcher - March 26, 2008 01:05 AM (GMT)
Much as I would like to see some of the Buffy cast back on screen, Joss has a knack for finding just the right people to play the characters in his shows.....if that means a boatload of newbies then so be it.....better that than old friends playing roles they are really not suited too.....or even worse, extra pointless characters being added just to fit them in.........

Anyway, from whats been revealed so far about the shows plot....looks like there is plenty of scope for the odd 'guest' to appear..... ;)

Four join cast of Whedon's 'Dollhouse'

Thursday, March 27 2008, 10:48 GMT (05:48 ET)

By Dave West, Media Correspondent

Tahmoh Penikett, Fran Kranz, Dichen Lachman and Enver Gjokaj have joined the new series from Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon.

The drama is about a group of men and women, known as dolls, who are charged with carrying out a series of "assignments". They can be imprinted with different memories, skills, language and abilities appropriate to each task.

Penikett (Battlestar Galactica) will play FBI agent Paul Smith who wants to find the dolls, viewed by others as an urban myth. Kranz (Welcome to the Captain) joins as bright-spark programmer Topher Brink who does the imprinting.

Lachman (Neighbours) and Gjokaj takes the role of dolls Sierra and Victor respectively. Both are friends of main doll Echo who begins to become self-aware. Eliza Dushku (Buffy, Angel) has already signed to play Echo.

Fox is planning a seven-episode season of the show for September.

With the end in sight, so too are new beginnings for Pennikett, including a role on Dollhouse, the highly anticipated new Fox series from Buffy, Angel and Firefly creator Joss Whedon. The show, starring Buffy alum Eliza Dushku, follows an organization that employs mind-wiped agents known as "dolls" who are implanted with false memories and skills for various missions and tasks. Fox Broadcasting Co. decided to forgo a pilot for its new series "Dollhouse" by "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon, opting to invest money instead in building the elaborate, life-size dollhouse that will be the show’s set.

I think this is great news as if they are spending large money on a set now it would seem they are going to give a good chance to succeed rather then cancel after just couple of episodes.

My job is always ice cream and chocolate syrup, but some days I get sprinkles too! Today is one of those days, because I just got a major treat in the form of a sneak peek at Joss Whedon's Dollhouse pilot. Click in to pour some sugar for yourself...

What's the pilot episode called?
"Echo."

What's it about?
The logline don't lie: "Echo (Eliza Dushku) is a young woman who is literally everybody's fantasy. She is one of a group of men and women who can be imprinted with personality packages, including memories, skills, language—even muscle memory—for different assignments. The assignments can be romantic, adventurous, outlandish, uplifting, sexual and/or very illegal. When not imprinted with a personality package, Echo and the others are basically mind-wiped, living like children in a futuristic dorm/lab dubbed the Dollhouse, with no memory of their assignments—or of much else. The show revolves around the childlike Echo's burgeoning self-awareness, and her desire to know who she was before, a desire that begins to seep into her various imprinted personalities and puts her in danger both in the field and in the closely monitored confines of the Dollhouse."

What's it like?
Dollhouse is like The Bourne Identity meets Stepford Wives meets boarding school meets Los Angeles neo-noir meets the Whedonverse. In short, it's rad, man.

If I was writing an eighth-grade book report about Dollhouse, what would I list as the "themes"?
Identity, self-determination, free will is both a blessing and a pain in the ass, The Next Generation's Data is a great TV character, Eliza Dushku is hot. What? Those first three at least are almost certainly themes.

Is Echo just a new name for Faith?
That's a negatory. Echo has a genius for contemplation and self-awareness that Faith couldn't begin to approach. Echo also has about 48 different faces to show the world, which gives her a good head start on Faith, who seemed to vary primarily between rage and desolation. In the first episode, we are shown that Echo is essentially like the Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz—"If I only had a brain..."—but she's otherwise fully equipped with a soul, a rockin' bod, and a good, fearless heart.

Who's the new boss of us all?
Olivia Williams is going to rock as Adelle Dewitt, a Frigidaire administratrix whose rare brushes with human empathy and compassion are enough to make you suspect she might just be a good guy after all.

Where's the twist?
The Dolls are programmed to mix up identity and personality with a splash of subterfuge and a dash of dementia—but they're not the only ones. Tahmoh Penikett's FBI agent Paul Ballard is obsessed with opening up the Dollhouse, but he may have more in common with—and already be closer to—the Dolls than he even knows.

Where is the love?
Echo and Paul are going to be hot like fire, no doubt, but I predict that cerebral Doll mechanic Topher (think Kevin Rankin's character in Bionic Woman, but more evil) and blank-slate Kewpie-doll Sierra (Dichen Lachman) might end up being the other pair of opposites that attract.

Who's the Xander?
If I had to guess, I'd pick Victor (Enver Gjokaj).

What does the actress who plays Dr. Claire Saunders need to bring to the table?
Visible facial scars from a razor-blade attack somewhere in her past or a cooperative, calm personality and a willingness to sit quietly in a prosthetic makeup chair for extended periods each day. Scars notwithstanding, I'm kind of seeing Cynthia Watros or Kathleen Robertson in the part...

Televisionary website give us their thoughts on the script for the pilot episode of Dollhouse a great read and if it's possible I'm even more excited now!

Warning Spoilers!

Highlight to read

I am still trying to catch my breath.

I'm talking about my reaction last night after reading Joss Whedon's brilliantly evocative script for his new seven-episode drama series for FOX, Dollhouse.

If there's one thing that Dollhouse has been this development season in Hollywood, it's been THE script to try to get your hands on. After weeks of conniving, begging, and bartering, I finally managed to get my greedy mitts on the script and hungrily devoured the 54-page script in about fifteen minutes, seemingly without pausing to breathe.

While I had extremely high expectations for Dollhouse (I always trust in the Joss), I was worried that, after all of the hype and hoopla, it wouldn't quite live up to my preconceived notions about the project. I am happy to say that not only were those expectations matched but they were exceeded. This isn't latter-day Alias by any stretch of the imagination: while there are still costume changes and choreographed fight sequences, it delves into bigger issues of morality and mortality and asks hard questions about the ethical ramifications of science and technology.

Yes, there is much more to Dollhouse than meets the eye and Whedon succeeds here by filling his script with a multitude of morally grey characters engaged in one of the most sickening and intriguing displays of human trafficking ever devised. I don't want to spoil anything but I will say that there there's an unexplained back story (referred to as Alpha) that will likely come into play down the line and the power structure within the Dollhouse is a fluctuating, living thing unto itself. As for the Dollhouse itself, it certainly didn't "look" anything like I expected it to based on the information that was trickling out during casting: it's not a draconian prison nor an icy SD-6-type operations hub; instead it's more like a serene, Japanese-influenced, high-tech spa for the Actives.

But there's a real undercurrent of danger lurking here and the staffers--from jokey and amoral tech Topher and gruff handler Boyd to the physically scarred Dr. Claire Saunders and manipulative overseer Adelle DeWitt--engage in a high-stakes game of human chess, with the Actives little more than expendable pawns. Or, well, dolls.

As for Dollhouse's lead character Echo, this is quite a role that Whedon has written for Eliza Dushku, allowing her to play a variety of personalities and moods in a single episode. In fact, we get to see Echo in no less than five (off the top of my head anyway) identities in the pilot episode alone. As we all know, Echo is struggling with self-awareness, as she begins remembering things from her previous "engagements" that she shouldn't, things that should have been wiped clean from her memory by Topher. Things that her "captors" don't want her to remember.

So is it an action-adventure yarn? A story of science gone mad? A tale about a cop determined to get at the truth no matter what the cost? Or a metaphysical drama about the nature of memory and identity? Why can't it be all of the above?

In the gifted hands of Joss Whedon, Dollhouse is a beautiful enigma wrapped in a riddle, a gripping conspiracy story for the ages filled with urban legends, memory tampering, and long-buried secrets coming to the fore. It's a Shakespearean story of hubris and likely vengeance, filled with sound and fury and signifying, well, lots.

I'm hungry for more.
