On the bright side, I don’t have to leave my newborn baby for Chicago and fly home every other weekend. And one other little tidbit…there’s this writer/director/show runner that I have wished for years to work with, and now I’m available and he’s got a new show to put together. Believe me, if there is a chance in Hell, I’ll be the first one hunting around Hell for that chance. Working with Joss Whedon would be making a very sugary, spiked lemonade out of lemons. "Dollhouse" Tv Series - Will Fox give it a chance ? Question : As we all know, our dearly beloved Joss Whedon is returning to Fox this fall with his new show Dollhouse, starring Eliza Dushku. While it’s a bit too early to speculate on whether it’s going to be a success (critically or otherwise), I’m still interested in what you think about how patient Fox will be if the show does not become a hit right away. Fox has canceled some pretty good shows quickly in the past (including the amazing Wonderfalls), but it seemed like the network was more patient with Eliza Dushku’s Tru Calling and Joss Whedon’s Firefly than with other shows. Although both shows only attracted mediocre ratings, they at least kept them on for half a season (or in Tru Calling’s case even a little bit longer than a full season). It was as if they were waiting for them to become sleeper hits despite their horrible time slots. Also, Firefly proved that Fox can make a lot of money with Joss Whedon’s shows, even if short-lived. DVDs of the show are still selling. Might Fox be more patient with Dollhouse than with other shows because it knows that Whedon has a strong fan base that can bring them an awful lot of money, or will the network treat it just like every other show ? Also, I’m curious how you see Fox scheduling the show. I for one hope it won’t be on Friday nights. Fox has a lot of mystery/sci-fi themed shows in development (Fringe, The Oaks, Dollhouse) and on the air (Terminator, New Amsterdam), and I’m wondering whether Fox is going to become the sci-fi/animated network, just like ABC became the female-centered network, CBS the crime network and NBC the offbeat, "we’re not so mainstream" network.— Donnie Matt Roush : Never too early to obsess, is it ? Joss Whedon’s return to TV is without doubt big news, but I would be surprised if Fox’s expectations go much beyond a cult sensation, which these days ought to be enough. Could Dollhouse break out the way Heroes and Lost did in their first seasons, or Alias did in the media ? Let’s hope. If the show is as good as the buzz is over the pilot script, I’d think Fox would do everything it can to ensure it gets maximum exposure. Which means not scheduling it in a Friday death slot, and which absolutely means being patient. As you rightly note, there’s incredible potential in the merchandising marketplace for anything Joss touches, so it’s in everyone’s best interests to do right by this one. As for Fox’s brand identity, it seems to me that landing a sci-fi/fantasy hit has been a priority since The X-Files signed off six years ago. It’s just easier said than done. But if anyone can do it, Joss can.

From Tvguide.com - By Webmaster - 2008-03-25 Buffy Alums Circling Joss Whedon's "Dollhouse" Tv Series Dollhouse Eliza Dushku may be bunking with some old friends when she moves into Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse next season. According to multiple sources, several Buffyverse grads are being considered for the eight supporting roles now being cast. Whedon confirmed this unbelievably fraktacular turn of events moments before taking the stage at Paley Fest’s Buffy tribute last Thursday. "I’ve read a couple of people [from the Buffyverse]," he told me, "but I’m not going to say who." Although this would seem to contradict comments the Buffy master made to me last fall, in which he said that his "first instinct is to probably [cast] new people because I’m already reuniting with Eliza and I don’t want it to seem like a house party," Whedon insists his position hasn’t changed. "It’s not a hard and fast rule," clarifies the auteur, who just completed penning Dollhouse’s one-hour premiere. "I just want to make sure I get the right people. And I don’t want to give the impression that it’s just me and my friends having a party. Some [Buffyverse alums] might work out fine. But I’m not going to just seek out people that I already know are great. That would be lazy." You know what I say ? There’s nothin’ wrong with being lazy if it means Whedon reuniting with the likes of James Marsters, Charisma Carpenter and Julie Landau. Of course, that’s not to say they’re the Buffyverse vets in the running for Dollhouse. That’s not to say they aren’t either. See how I protected myself there ? What Buffyverse stars would you like to see populate Dollhouse ? Or do you think Whedon should trust his first instinct and surround Dushku with newbies ? Those are the questions that need answering. By you. Below.

Four join cast of Whedon's 'Dollhouse' Thursday, March 27 2008, 10:48 GMT (05:48 ET) By Dave West, Media Correspondent Tahmoh Penikett, Fran Kranz, Dichen Lachman and Enver Gjokaj have joined the new series from Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon. The drama is about a group of men and women, known as dolls, who are charged with carrying out a series of "assignments". They can be imprinted with different memories, skills, language and abilities appropriate to each task. Penikett (Battlestar Galactica) will play FBI agent Paul Smith who wants to find the dolls, viewed by others as an urban myth. Kranz (Welcome to the Captain) joins as bright-spark programmer Topher Brink who does the imprinting. Lachman (Neighbours) and Gjokaj takes the role of dolls Sierra and Victor respectively. Both are friends of main doll Echo who begins to become self-aware. Eliza Dushku (Buffy, Angel) has already signed to play Echo. Fox is planning a seven-episode season of the show for September.

With the end in sight, so too are new beginnings for Pennikett, including a role on Dollhouse, the highly anticipated new Fox series from Buffy, Angel and Firefly creator Joss Whedon. The show, starring Buffy alum Eliza Dushku, follows an organization that employs mind-wiped agents known as "dolls" who are implanted with false memories and skills for various missions and tasks. Needless to say, the whole operation is highly illegal. "I play an FBI agent who’s on the trail of the ’dolls’," he says. "I’m honoured to be a part of this. I mean, Joss is the biggest there is, one of the brightest and most creative. I’m looking forward to working with Eliza, too. I’m really excited to start work on it." (...) |

My job is always ice cream and chocolate syrup, but some days I get sprinkles too! Today is one of those days, because I just got a major treat in the form of a sneak peek at Joss Whedon's Dollhouse pilot. Click in to pour some sugar for yourself... What's the pilot episode called? "Echo." What's it about? The logline don't lie: "Echo (Eliza Dushku) is a young woman who is literally everybody's fantasy. She is one of a group of men and women who can be imprinted with personality packages, including memories, skills, language—even muscle memory—for different assignments. The assignments can be romantic, adventurous, outlandish, uplifting, sexual and/or very illegal. When not imprinted with a personality package, Echo and the others are basically mind-wiped, living like children in a futuristic dorm/lab dubbed the Dollhouse, with no memory of their assignments—or of much else. The show revolves around the childlike Echo's burgeoning self-awareness, and her desire to know who she was before, a desire that begins to seep into her various imprinted personalities and puts her in danger both in the field and in the closely monitored confines of the Dollhouse." What's it like? Dollhouse is like The Bourne Identity meets Stepford Wives meets boarding school meets Los Angeles neo-noir meets the Whedonverse. In short, it's rad, man. If I was writing an eighth-grade book report about Dollhouse, what would I list as the "themes"? Identity, self-determination, free will is both a blessing and a pain in the ass, The Next Generation's Data is a great TV character, Eliza Dushku is hot. What? Those first three at least are almost certainly themes. Is Echo just a new name for Faith? That's a negatory. Echo has a genius for contemplation and self-awareness that Faith couldn't begin to approach. Echo also has about 48 different faces to show the world, which gives her a good head start on Faith, who seemed to vary primarily between rage and desolation. In the first episode, we are shown that Echo is essentially like the Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz—"If I only had a brain..."—but she's otherwise fully equipped with a soul, a rockin' bod, and a good, fearless heart. Who's the new boss of us all? Olivia Williams is going to rock as Adelle Dewitt, a Frigidaire administratrix whose rare brushes with human empathy and compassion are enough to make you suspect she might just be a good guy after all. Where's the twist? The Dolls are programmed to mix up identity and personality with a splash of subterfuge and a dash of dementia—but they're not the only ones. Tahmoh Penikett's FBI agent Paul Ballard is obsessed with opening up the Dollhouse, but he may have more in common with—and already be closer to—the Dolls than he even knows. Where is the love? Echo and Paul are going to be hot like fire, no doubt, but I predict that cerebral Doll mechanic Topher (think Kevin Rankin's character in Bionic Woman, but more evil) and blank-slate Kewpie-doll Sierra (Dichen Lachman) might end up being the other pair of opposites that attract. Who's the Xander? If I had to guess, I'd pick Victor (Enver Gjokaj). What does the actress who plays Dr. Claire Saunders need to bring to the table? Visible facial scars from a razor-blade attack somewhere in her past or a cooperative, calm personality and a willingness to sit quietly in a prosthetic makeup chair for extended periods each day. Scars notwithstanding, I'm kind of seeing Cynthia Watros or Kathleen Robertson in the part... Got questions about the residents of the Dollhouse? Email me at tvdiva@eonline.com, and I'll do my best to conjure up some answers in the next chat. —Reporting by Jennifer Godwin
