Ashes to Ashes

9:00pm - 10:00pm

BBC1

Drama series following the exploits of Life on Mars' DCI Gene Hunt. In this first episode, DI Alex Drake is shot and lands in 1981, coming face-to-face with Gene Hunt, the relic of old-fashioned policing she'd read about in Sam Tyler's reports. Thinking that she is in a coma, Alex demands Hunt's help in tracking down the man who shot her in 2008.

Not wild about the idea, I have to admit.
Where's Sam got himself off to? The others seem to be listed as before - so, it was a bit of a waste Sam choosing to stay (After all, now he's a decade older and less able to cope with changes in policing and technology as they occur).
Can't see the point either - the 80s was the same as now, but with mullets and slower computers.

Mars sequel attracts 7m audience
Seven million viewers tuned in to watch the first episode of Ashes to Ashes, the sequel to BBC drama Life on Mars.
The figures compare favourably with its forerunner's final episode, which attracted a peak audience of 7.7 million in April 2007.

Set in 1981, the BBC One drama sees DCI Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) joining forces with female time-traveller Alex Drake, played by Keeley Hawes.

Like Life on Mars, the show takes its title from a David Bowie song.

'Humour and charm'

TV critics have generally been impressed by the programme, described in The Independent as "the mixture as before - a bit of pop culture, a bit of sci-fi [and] a bit of weirdness."

"Much of the humour and charm of the original series remains," agreed the Mirror's Jane Simon.

The Sun's Ally Ross described it as "a television programme to treasure", while the Telegraph said the show's 1980s setting "opened up a cornucopia of new possibilities".

The Guardian's reviewer was less welcoming, however, describing the show as "a big mess" with a "muddled" plot and a premise that "is now stretched to breaking point".

There was a lot in the pilot that I really enjoyed, ie, all the Gene Hunt bits.

Nice that they gave lots of info about what happened to Sam. :(

Not sure about Keeley Hawes character ; I didn`t find her that likeable.

Still found it all hugely enjoyable though. :)
