James Bond is back in 'Quantum of Solace' By Tom Chivers and agencies Last Updated: 12:01am GMT 24/01/2008 Daniel Craig is to reprise his role as the iconic superspy in the upcoming 22nd Bond film, "Quantum of Solace". Critics and public alike hailed his first outing as 007 in Casino Royale as having breathed new life into the classic franchise, in the face of concern that a "James Blond" would lack the gravitas of his predecessors. Daniel Craig is to reprise his role as the womanising, suave-yet-brutal secret agent in 'Quantum of Solace' Now Pinewood Studios has released a synopsis of the next instalment in the series. The plot of "Quantum of Solace" follows directly on from "Casino Royale", with 007 hunting for answers about Vesper Lynd, the love interest who seemingly betrayed him and died. His investigation leads him, via Bond girl Camille (played by Ukrainian-born actress Olga Kurylenko), to a mysterious businessman called Dominic Greene, played by Mathieu Amalric. "James Bond is after revenge, and Camille is after revenge … They have slightly different goals, but in the end they are going to have to collaborate," said Kurylenko. The synopsis was given to reporters during a tour of the Bond set at Pinewood. Three stages were shown, each representing a location in Siena, Italy. The journalists also watched a stunt fight involving Daniel Craig's body double. "Quantum of Solace" is due for release in cinemas on the 7th November this year.

For quant of a better word By Finlo Rohrer BBC News Magazine The producers of the James Bond franchise have raised eyebrows among fans by revealing the next film will be called Quantum of Solace. So what exactly is a quantum of solace? You would think that the people behind James Bond would regard themselves as once bitten twice shy. In 1989, there was a mini-kerfuffle when they wanted to call the Timothy Dalton vehicle, Licence Revoked. It was suggested American moviegoers might not quite grasp the meaning of the word "revoked" and thus it became Licence to Kill. But they are obviously unfazed by that experience and have plumped for the most headscratchy of titles. It might require a little explanation for most of the punters who usually turn out for Bond movies. First off, a quantum is a type of unit. QUANTUM MEANINGS Smallest, indivisible unit of energy Something that has quantity A quantity of something An allocation of something "A quantum is the smallest amount of energy that a system can gain or lose," explains Sam Rae, editor of the physics.org website. Max Planck first started using the term in 1900 as part of a theory of physics at the sub-atomic level. In this theory light could be thought about as tiny lumps of energy as well as just a continuous wave, says Jim al-Khalili, professor of physics at Surrey University. This idea of energy as tiny discrete particles was a major departure from classical physics and quantum theory was taken on by other notables such as Albert Einstein. "It forms the foundation for most of modern physics and chemistry," says Prof al-Khalili "We wouldn't have CD players, iPods and mobile phones if quantum theory hadn't been. It is the most powerful theory in science." Unit of compassion But James Bond author Ian Fleming obviously thought the concept was too good to just leave to the physicists and borrowed it for a short story in the collection For Your Eyes Only in 1960. The story is set at a dinner party where the governor of the Bahamas tells a story to Bond about a British official in the Caribbean. The man has been cuckolded by his wife, responds harshly and is left emotionally broken. "Everything is made of quanta [the plural of quantum]," says Prof al-Khalili. "This looks like it is extending it to the tiniest unit of compassion." Bond star Daniel Craig attempted to cast a little light on the matter, indicating it referred to doomed relationships. "When they go wrong, when there's nothing left, when the spark has gone, when the fire's gone out, there's no quantum of solace." Aside from its use in quantum physics, the word has a number of other meanings, as the Oxford English Dictionary reveals. It has traditionally been used to refer to something which has quantity; to the total quantity of something; or to someone's ration of something. So the quantum of solace could be the allocation of comfort that one has been given, however large or small. And of course most of us are familiar with the term quantum leap, to describe a sudden and large-scale-shift in something. Physicists however also use this in the opposite sense, a typical quantum leap being the smallest possible change in the energy level of an electron. It's all as potentially confusing for Bond fans as another title that the producers could have chosen from Fleming's short stories, the Hildebrand Rarity. Physicists will be hoping that the title might make for a bit of popularisation of the concept of quantum physics. They could be disappointed. "I'm guessing a lot of James Bond fans will hate the title but I'm loving it," says Prof al-Khalili. Story from BBC NEWS:

Next Bond film gets early release Quantum of Solace, the next James Bond film, is to be released earlier than expected - on 31 October - its producers have announced. The 22nd film in the series, and Daniel Craig's second outing as 007, had been due for release on 7 November. The title of the film, which follows on from 2006's Casino Royale, is taken from a short story published by Bond creator Ian Fleming in 1960. Filming has already taken place in Panama and the United States. The main film shoot, with Marc Forster directing, began at Pinewood Studios, Buckinghamshire, in January. Party scene It was great working on the streets of Panama because you get a sense of what the real Panama City's like Gemma Arterton BBC One's Breakfast programme broadcast exclusive footage on Wednesday of the cast and crew on location in Panama City and the Californian desert. The desert scenes were shot in such a remote location that three helicopter trips had to be made every time equipment and crew had to be moved. An old ruin in Panama City is shown before and after it was transformed into a key party scene featuring Ukrainian former model Olga Kurylenko playing Bond girl Camille. The Panama scenes also involve British Bond girl Gemma Arterton, who plays MI6 Agent Fields. "It was great working on the streets of Panama because you get a sense of what the real Panama City's like," she said. "They've got so much life and character to them." Further filming will take place at locations including Chile, Austria and Italy. In January, Craig said the title Quantum of Solace made reference to how Bond's heart was broken at the end of Casino Royale. "Ian Fleming had written about relationships," he said. "When they go wrong, when there's nothing left, when the spark has gone, when the fire's gone out, there's no quantum of solace. "And at the end of the last movie, Bond has the love of his life taken away from him and he never got that quantum of solace." Craig said the new film would follow 007 as he goes out "to find the guy who's responsible" for her death. Story from BBC NEWS:
