Written by James Moran
When a burglary turns into a slaughter, Torchwood suspect alien involvement. Who is Beth, and can she be as innocent as she seems? But when the investigation escalates into a city-wide assault, Jack realises that the whole planet is in danger.
Dir: Colin Teague

The BBC site has been updated with some pictures from 2x02. All of them are Gwen, Jack and the guest star.

They've also put up a clip here. This inludes the whole team.

Very first impressions, will say more when I rewatch tomorrow.

Ianto :lmao:. Just when I think I can't love the character any more they give him some more one-liners. I love happy sarcy Ianto
I think I prefered this episode to last week's
I didn't hate Gwen this episode (though again with the 'Gwen's so human' stuff).

prophecy girl - January 24, 2008 10:23 AM (GMT)
an ok episode

not sure about ianto: having a little too much fun with the "mind probing chair", complaining about someone knowing more than he does  but :lmao: to his reaction at owen's suggestion "it's the end of the world, let's all have sex"

gwen was ok but since the time she has been in Torchwood, jack is usually right. but it was hard to not feel sorry for beth (a life of lies)

no one really asked jack how he knew so much about the sleeper aliens :ermm:

the trailer for next episode was interesting

little pixie - January 24, 2008 02:17 PM (GMT)
Really enjoyable episode, though the alien hand thingy could have been much better ; it looked like a Blue Peter project instead of something out of Terminator 2.

Thought the guest actress was good.

prophecy girl - January 24, 2008 07:14 PM (GMT)
so the alien seem to know about Torchwood but it wasn't clear if they knew about jack "gift"

i hope we are gonna hear a bit more about the alien world that sent beth and co

Oh I loved seeing the playful side of Ianto . More please!
Ianto is the archivist, it'd be like when Gwendolyn (was that the fake Watcher?) insulted Giles' knowledge in Buffy S3

I thought they knew about Jack's immortality, at least that's what I took from the line that was addressed directly at him

we don't know how long the sleepers have been around (actually was the baby that the woman let go her :fear: or was she the nanny :fear: ? ) was it before Ianto start his job at torchwood ?

We've seen Ianto bloody and bruised, he's not a Sleeper ;)

Laura - January 24, 2008 10:41 PM (GMT)
After a third watching I think that I prefer Sleeper to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and I think because it's us seeing the team working together again without the 'Jack's just back' stuff going on. They all seemed to work well together as well with each team member fulfilling his or her role and so helping towards the overall goal - Jack leading the team and out in the field, Toshiko working on all the technical stuff, Owen being the doctor, Ianto helping with the technical stuff as well as knowledge and being damn funny, and Gwen fulfilling her role as the 'compassionate' team member. However, they all seemed to work together as friends as well which was nice. The scene with Ianto and Gwen walking away from the frozen Beth in the vaults was a nice touch and showed an understanding there which didn't need dialogue. And the fact that it looks like Ianto has been discussing Jack's bedroom manners indicates a friendship has formed between the two of them. The banter between them is also a lot warmer than last season with them able to take the piss out of each other without it coming across as nasty.

They made a good job of making Beth sympathetic from the outset and, although I knew that she was going down the suicide-by-cop route, it was sad to see her killed off.

They're probably going to have to do a fair amount of cutting for the 7pm showing of this since it was pretty bloody. And the pram rolling into traffic *shudders*.

Ianto was awesome as usual coming out with some cracking one liners.

Ianto: "Just us in this room for as long as it takes. Terrifying."
Jack: "Really?"
Ianto: "Absolutely. Shivers down my spine."
Jack: "You don't look scared."
Ianto: "It...passed."
Jack: *growl*

Not only does it show a nice friendship between the two of them, it also serves to calm Jack down who comes out of the interview room fuming and leaves the conversation with Ianto pretty calm.

"They know more about this place than I do. Nobody knows more than I do."
Followed later by "I know everything. And it's written at the bottom of the screen"

And of course

"What if they can't stop it?"
Ianto: "Then it's all over"
Owen: "Let's all have sex."
Ianto: "And I thought the end of the world couldn't get any worse."

Again with the funny.

I actually didn't dislike Gwen that much in this episode. It reminded me a lot of Day One with her connection with Carys, but I wouldn't think she would be as naive (that's probably not the right word) as she is here. Jack knows how this is going to end, he can't promise Beth anything and he's quite cold about it probably to keep a distance, but Gwen just can't. It wasn't as forced as I think it has been in the past though, I could tolerate Gwen's heart in this episode. I did notice that she doesn't ever seem to exit the role of 'good cop' after the interrogation though - she tells Beth that "they'll" do the tests whether she wants them or not.

* I think I prefer the old voiceover at the start of the episodes to the new one. I think we all know that Torchwood isn't ready *g*.
* What made the police think that the case needed the attention of Torchwood in the first place?
* The new comms are a bit odd, I wish they'd just kept with the bluetooth headsets then it doesn't look like they've randomly started talking to themselves. Talking of - Gwen has an N95, that's just going to crash constantly and that's no use when you're trying to save the world ;)
* There's a big red dragon painted on the upper level of the Hub, that wasn't there last year was it? Very pretty.
* Jack gets stabbed in the chest and yet can still outrun Beth and Gwen?

She was bloody awful

Apart from that I thought it was much, much better than last week's. A distinct lack of juvenile sex jokes and no James Bleedin' Marsters. Both bonuses in my books :)

Fangy and grrr - January 26, 2008 12:39 AM (GMT)
Pretty decent episode with some good lines and as with the first episode the dynamic between the team was much better than last season :) - they really seem to have made an effort to make Owen more likeable I mean he was even watering plants in this episode. :o ;)

The problem for me ( and I'm sorry Laura ) is Ianto. I actually think he's potentially a really good character and he had some great lines in the first two episodes the problem is the guy's just not a good enough actor imo. It's interesting Laura mentioned Giles as that's who sprung to my mind as well as they both a had a similar line in dry, deadpan humour but whereas ASH was a master in delivering those lines Ianto's delivery is too flat and wooden.

One last thing did anybody else think Jack looked a bit like the Genie from the lamp with the way the way he kept standing around with his arms folded ? ;)

Well, I saw him on stage as Aladdin last week- NO comparison between him and his Genie (which was computeranimated, bright orange and legless- but DID fold its arms quite a lot).

Yeh, the one aspect of the show that was a tad overdone (although the tinies were shrieking cheerfully at the FX). On-off, on-off with our 3D specs... bet it cost more that casting a good live actor in the part too, and left the divine Mr B acting to fresh air (not that he's not perfectly capable) for too much of the time.

And they didn't throw sweeties! A disasterous new development in PC (Bad Dietry 'message') and litigation-culture: 'my little Willie was damaged by a flying sherbert and will never play the wurlizer again...'

But he's an absolute STAR, as we know, and if he can face down the Grumbleweeds in panto, what can't he do in other characters? :yahoo:

I see you PG :hbd:

Bum! You've gone again.

No idea I'm afraid, BBC Scotland aren't giving us either the pre-watershed version or Declassified because of Gaelic programmes on Thursdays <_<. Thought we'd get it on Wednesdays instead like last week but no luck. Luckily the declassified are on iPlayer. James Moran's blog indicated that the baby pram scene was trimmed (I'd imagine you either didn't see it start to roll or the sound effect was cut), and two deaths were completely cut (I'd assume the councillor and the Sleeper's wife?).

It's now right after the kiddies version on Thurs, so about 7.45-7.50 depending on how much they cut :)

I'm assuming we're now talking about To The Last Man? The only thing that I heard was changed was Gwen's line "Bloody cheer up" to Ianto was missing the "bloody". It wasn't a gory or violent episode so they'd find it difficult to find stuff that needed cutting.
