Jack is in for a surprise when Captain John Hart, a man who he long thought was gone, comes to greet him...
Darris - January 17, 2008 12:44 AM (GMT)
Well I quite enjoyed that. I thought James did a good job playing John Hart and it gave us a little insight into Jack. I didn't quite catch what he said at the end though as he was going into the rift, can anyone tell me?
And the teaser for whats to come... Looking forward to the rest of the series.
prophecy girl - January 17, 2008 10:32 AM (GMT)
you mean when he said "oh i was meant to tell you, i found Gray" before disappearing (and jack got a flashback and seem a bit upset ......... i hope this bit will probably be developped in the future)
i hope they will explain what's the time agency was about
an ok first episode, a bit of trust issue between jack and the team, the usual teasing/flirting (yeah jack got a date with Ianto  )
not sure about the all fishy guy who seemed to know so much about torchwood (it does seem the population know a lot about torchwood, probably due to the big evil demon of last season finale) when john commented over the fish demon that he went through the rift to get killed so quickly
an ok plot, good twist with the DNA bomb and a resolve that might come back as jack has now torchwood blood.
i was a bit surprise that jack explained/told so easily about the fact he was unable to die, he tried to keep that info secret last season
:ph43r: @ the star war quote at the end of the message
 @ the teaser
little pixie - January 17, 2008 03:13 PM (GMT)
:lmao: at the Star Wars bit. :ph43r:
Quite enjoyed it, although - and I think I complained about this last season - the sound semed a bit muddy to me.

Everyone knows now anyway so he doesn't need to keep it secret.
I'll comment further after I rewatch it but I was quite happy. Still kept saying "shut up, Gwen" a lot though .

star wars quote, jack and john being from the 25th century, make you wonder what kind of films they got in a supposed futurist world
i know his team know about him unable to die but why tell john
and yes they should immobilized/poisonned gwen more often
little pixie - January 17, 2008 07:10 PM (GMT)
Oooh, I forgot to comment on the bit where Cap`n John says Thirsty now - thought it was quite Whedonesque. ;)
Fangy and grrr - January 17, 2008 08:53 PM (GMT)
I really enjoyed the first episode :) apart from the rather clumsy bit where the blowfish introduced us to the team it was pretty slick and very funny.
The banter between the team was much better ( even Ianto was pretty good :o ) I thought JM was fantastic but so was JB and their scenes together where really good.
As well as the Star Wars gag I also really liked Ianto telling Jack to check out the roof as he's good with roof's  nice reference back to all those endless shots of him on rooftops in S1.
Pretty good start. :)

Something else I forgot to mention.
Yep, thought they`d finally provided Ianto with something to do. Ooh, and I found Owen much better than before; he didn`t boink anyone at all in the whole episode ! :o
Laura - January 17, 2008 10:09 PM (GMT)
* It's nice to see Jack a little bit lighter in tone than he was last year. His trip with the Doctor has certainly done him some good, though it's no surprise that he doesn't tell his team about the year that never was.
* More Ianto! Yay! The main character that I actually liked last season, and he gets to show off that dry humour as well. He's obviously quite angry about Jack disappearing from the scene in the office and I hope that they at least follow that up a little. Gwen got an explanation and I think Ianto would deserve one too. I still adore his glee when he starts counting down the time until the bomb detonates. And I had to laugh at the
"As long as it's not in an office. Some fetishes should be kept to yourself"
line. This coming from the guy who came out with
"Think about it. Lots of things you can do with a stopwatch" *g*.
* Owen is a lot more likeable this season. I didn't like his character last year but during my rewatch I warmed to him and I actually liked him here. Shooting out the SUV looked brilliant and I like how they're moving him away from the 'shags anything that moves even if he has to drug them' territory he was in last year, and after Diane I don't know if it would make sense for him to go back? And the "things in common" line, Martha anyone?
* Tosh seems to have lost a bit of her shyness since Jack's been gone. It'll be nice to see some more contribution from her as she was underused last year. That scanner is just going to end up being a CPD though. Need to triangulate a mobile phone signal within five seconds? Well we've got the device for you. It'll also find rift energy! It looks like Tosh kept quiet about what Jack told her during Captain Jack Harkness though since Gwen didn't know about Jack being a conman. Wonder if that totally takes the stuff they posted on the Torchwood Hub site out of canon and means her IM conversation with Ianto about the real Captain Jack and Jack's immortality is void?
* Gwen. Well, I couldn't help going "shut the **** up, Gwen" a lot. She gets all pissy because they don't know anything about Jack, well you knew more than everyone else last season and it didn't seem to grate as much then with you. In the boardroom getting in Jack's face, just shut up Gwen. The Jack/Gwen scene in the basement seemed a bit odd to me. I've never liked the idea of a Jack/Gwen romance so I was never going to warm to this but it just seemed to be going "look at them, they're so right for each other". If they go down that road I won't be happy at all.
* Captain John. "God, he's worse than Jack". Pretty much sums him up. Mix Jack with Spike and you get Captain John. Part of me really did think that he loved Jack but he seemed to find it awfully easy to lob him off the roof. I love the idea that they have rehab for pretty much anything in the future. I loved the star wars reference from holo-John, you can't do something like that and not make some reference to it.
Possibly the best line was from the trailer though, made me crack up.
Ianto: "It's all over."
Owen: "Let's all have sex."
Ianto: "And I thought the end of the world couldn't get any worse."
QUOTE
i know his team know about him unable to die but why tell the other jack
Well it's got to be pretty obvious to John that he's come back from the dead. And there may be an element of :p there too

Yep, the trailer had some serious squeaking moments for me.
Although it took me a while to realise that it was a trailer for the rest of the season; I initially thought Gosh, they`re packing a lot into one episode, aren`t they ? :ph43r:

And it featured a smiling Ianto  :o.
I thought the trailer was just for next week as well . Pretty sure I thought the same thing last year as well. I just saw a trailer for 2x02 Sleeper on the beeb about 20 minutes ago but it's not online yet.

in doctor who, martha said they had been away from the present for something like two days, then the master got elected, the next day tell everyone about the aliens and then the next day/morning, everyone is on the flying ship so jack should have disappeared only for less than a week but for the team it look like it has been longer or torchwood procedure is making team reorganisation very fast (gwen in charge?!)

Wasn't it something like a day or so since the events of The Sound of Drums? We don't know how much time passed between the events of Jack leaping on the TARDIS at the start of Utopia and then do we? :ermm:
I think the producers have said that Jack has been gone for anywhere between two weeks and three months.
prophecy girl - January 18, 2008 07:21 PM (GMT)
and at the end of the last of the time lord, jack was walking to the HQ and it was day, so how long the team has been running after the fish guy? and how did jack find them? as if it was better to surprise them (and nnnoooo i didn't think of "when she was bad" when he said "hey kid, did you miss me?" :innocent: ) than calling them on their mobiles to find out what was going on
Laura - January 18, 2008 08:06 PM (GMT)
That's a bit of a plot hole, and I did notice. I just kinda justified it by thinking that the team would have been out of the Hub when he got back and he's spent the time tracking them down with his
CPD wriststap. ;) They all seem to have changed their phones (though it was too dark to get a proper look, they look like Samsung's to me) so maybe they have new numbers, or they were switched off or who knows .
BBC site has some 'making of' videos for 2x01 here if anyone is interested.

Love Ianto, love Jack, plus I liked Rhys and PC Andy. Didn't really have strong feelings about Tosh but she didn't annoy me. Disliked Owen but have grown to like him after rewatching S1 and KKBB (but I still think having him use the date rape drug pheremone spray in 1x01 was a big mistake when introducing someone who is meant to be one of the heroes. Didn't like Gwen at all, and still think that scene with Jack in 2x01 was a bit too much like being whacked in the face with a brick (even my friend who isn't into the fandom aspects of the show asked "where the hell did that come from?" )

prophecy girl - January 24, 2008 10:42 AM (GMT)
there was a scene in season one when jack and gwen are firing arm where you would have thought, something was going on
but here, i think jack was just using his charm on gwen to have her forgive him quickly and was surprised to find a ring when he took her hands (seeing how much fun she seem to even think of the wedding's date and place in " sleeper" , anything can happen )

I watched it, mainly out of curiosity as to what they'd cut (which wasn't a lot, though I can imagine 2x02 needing a fair amount of editing :ermm: ).
- The line about the blowfish having cocaine in his blood is removed, it's just like the one in the promo.
-They removed some brain splatter when Jack shoots said blowfish.
-You don't hear the guy who John drops off the multi-storey carpark hit the ground (but you do hear Jack hit the ground later in the episode )
- John pushes Tosh in the warehouse instead of headbutting her.
-We see John approaching Jack but don't see Jack's body over the bench, they just had John's line over him approaching Jack.
-The offer of an orgy (x2) from John is removed.
I think that's all the cuts. Bizarrely they removed some stuff from the trailer after the pre-watershed episode such as the Ianto/Owen exchange from Sleeper
Ianto: It's over
Owen: Let's all have sex
Ianto: And I thought the end of the world couldn't get any worse.
but it was then in the trailer that was at the end of declassified directly after it :lmao:

Going back to the What I don`t like about some of the Torchwood cast discussion...
I don`t know that the cast really gels for me ; some scenes of them just hanging out would be nice. :ponder:
Plus, the early episodes ( or was it the first one ? ) where Susie, Tosh and Owen break the rules and take things home with them for their personal ( particularly in the case of Owen  ) use - I think that`s coloured my opinion of them. :)

I think they appear to be more of a team and friends in 2x02. I'll talk about that when I rewatch Sleeper since it's one tiny scene in that which made me see them as friends (that could have been worded better but my brain isn't working today  ).

BBC America were doing blog things as Captain Jack on their website when they started airing S1 a couple of months back. They've updated it now that KKBB aired there on Saturday night. It's not really canon but it can help fill in some plot holes
