Title: Happy Thanksgiving
Description: To sleepy friends

Well, what I'm most thankful for is a 4 DAY WEEKEND!! :yahoo:

According to the clock above, it's almost 11 pm over there. Time for a history lesson.

According to my internet research, there are only two original sources (two people who were actually present) for the "first Thanksgiving". One was written in Dec 1621. The other, 20 years later.

They are both very brief and talk about the successful harvest and the harvest festival to which they invited the nearby Indians who had trained them to plant corn (called "Indian Corn" by the colonists becaues "corn" was being used for wheat). There were about 90 Indians to the 53 Pilgrims.

No exact date is given but it must have occurred before the arrival of a second ship of settlers in November of 1621. So, maybe October or early November.

Both sources list foodstuffs. One of them includes turkey. Eventually, that would be given a prominent position in the story's retelling -- much to the annoyance of the turkeys.

Of course, these British ex-patriots didn't call themselves Pilgrims. That would happen much later. And not all were religious dissenters escaping from the domination of the Church of England. Some were recruited for the purpose of rounding out the skills of the settlement.

Anyway, a year earlier, they trod the soils of England. And now they are myth. And their harvest festival has become a great excuse for feasting and staying away from work for long intervals.
