Time to give it a thread of its own, I think :)

It's a rare thing when a game comes along with the power to move a player emotionally. Warts and all, you'll want to experience Mass Effect if you have any interest at all in enjoying one of the greatest efforts that modern videogaming has to offer. Mass Effect takes interactive entertainment to breathtaking new heights and is wholeheartedly recommended. This is one of the best games of the year, and will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the greatest games ever made.

If the side quests stand out as a tad disappointing, it's only because of the quality of the overall experience. It is a sci-fi fan's wet dream, with movie quality presentation, storyline and score that's a real showcase for the 360. Mass Effect is the game every Blade Runner fan has been anticipating for years, and BioWare has done a stupendous job of creating a world that is not only engaging but completely drenched from head to toe in futuristic cool. You feel it everywhere. It's in the tremendously effective film grain effect which is washed over everything, giving proceedings a more cinematic feel. It's in the wonderful 80's sci-fi inspired score, a soundtrack surely destined for separate release. It's in the impressively detailed cut-scenes, whether it be landing the Mako rover on a far away planet or a full scale galactic conflict overlooking an embattled space station. It's in the game's physics, which sends enemies spiralling off ledges and slowly floating away in zero gravity environments like rag-dolls on speed. It's in the plot, a superb tale full of political machinations, mysterious alien races, hidden artefacts, shocking revelations and an evil alien commando gone rogue. It's in Urdnot Wrex, the tough talking and reclusive Krogan Battlemaster who joins you on your quest. It's in the game's sound effects - the pulse of the sniper rifle, the ripple of space as you invoke a Singularity, the gravitas of simply bringing up your squad's power wheel. And it's in the Elkor, an alien race so depressing and yet loveable that you'd throw Winnie the Pooh's Eeyore and Yogi Bear into a river if it meant you could take one home.

Mass Effect is a triumph. A triumph for the science fiction video game, a triumph for the action RPG and a triumph for next generation gaming. And it sets up the sequel perfectly. I want to know what happens next. I want BioWare to release new planets as DLC. I want online co-op so other people can take control of my squad members. I have had a sip of this bewitching cocktail and now I want to down the whole lot. Bar a pre-Christmas release of stupendous proportions, Mass Effect is my game of the year.

A quest can take several hours to finish, depending on what order you complete each mission and the side quests. At the end of it all, you're able to simply jump back in and do it all over again. Even the smallest of changes, like the decision to leave a party member behind or the way you react to questioning, shifts the tempo of the game almost in an entirely different direction. Your end goal is the same, but new missions arise that weren't on the galaxy map before and people you thought you knew look at you in a different (but not altogether better) light.

This game is one that anyone out there, who can legally purchase it, should experience whether you own an Xbox 360 or not. The universe in Mass Effect is so huge that gamers will spend countless hours just exploring and checking things out. Everything is available to interact with and Bioware has set few limits to hold back the curious player. Other than the AI issues, graphical glitches, and insanely confusing equipment screen Mass Effect is the perfect video game. The storyline is right up there with Star Wars and Lord of the Rings and we are can barely hold back our excitement to see what happens in the next two games.
PlanetXbox360.comHard to know how you're going to experience it if you haven't got a 360

My goodness, does Mass Effect love to talk - or at least it certainly does in the first few hours, as BioWare cranks up the cinematic dial up to 11 and sets a course for the heart of sci-fi-rama. A word of warning before we get underway: if you're not someone with Babylon 5 or even Firefly box sets displayed proudly on your shelves, early encounters with this earnest 'save the galaxy' quest might feel like hard work.
Not as glowing a review as the others, for a bit of balance...

The achievements list is up and it seems non-spoilery (unlike BioShock's <_< ):

i am gonna wait until some of you post a quick review of that game because i am interested by mass effect, COD4 and assassin creed but i doubt i have the budget for three games <_< (PC games are kinda cheaper  )
willowroolz - November 21, 2007 08:11 AM (GMT)
If you're on a budget my suggestion would be to finish Halo 3, trade it in for COD 4, finish that and trade it in for Assassin's Creed, finish that and trade it in for Mass Effect :)

I would certainly recommend Assassin's Creed - haven't had so much pure fun playing a game in ages!

Yeah, it's a bit special
Not only is it one of the most gorgeous looking and sounding games I've ever played, it's also a refreshing change of pace after playing so many games where I've been running around shooting things. The mixture of exploration, investigating, stealth, assassinations and hand-to-hand combat etc works brilliantly.
In fact, that's a very good reason to get it ahead of the others, because it's a game to immerse yourself in and take your time to explore. COD4 and Mass Effect will just have you running around shooting things again ;)

I guess I might find out some time in the next decade or so

First impressions - great but flawed.
My main gripe is that I can't seem to get the other members of my party to do anything except during a fight, e.g. opening locked doors and containers. If you play as a soldier you haven't a hope in hell of opening them as far as I can see. I have a tech specialist with me who in theory has the necessary skills but I can't see any way (like in KOTOR or the NWN games) that you can order him to go and attempt to bypass the lock
The solution is to play as a tech able character yourself (and the tech mini game is crap)
That aside, I'm loving it so far and have barely scratched the surface story wise. :)

I'm not sure that's true. It seems that so long as you have someone in your party with a high enough tech skill level then you can carry out the various tasks, opening doors/containers etc :ponder:
Could just be another bug of course, otherwise it's pretty self-defeating :ermm:
goth willow fan - November 26, 2007 11:19 AM (GMT)
Yeah as long as there is someone in the party that has the necessary skills you can do opening locks/hacking etc.
Nice of them to explain that clearly in the manual :snooty: <_< :ermm:
Still think the skills mini game is a bit crap
willowroolz - November 26, 2007 11:36 AM (GMT)
The manual is shite
goth willow fan - November 27, 2007 10:12 AM (GMT)
Finished it already. It's all a bit short then :ermm:

Waste of money
