Title: Season 1
willowroolz - July 22, 2004 09:19 AM (GMT)
So yesterday I sat down (well, was immobilised, basically  ) and watched the director's cut of the movie and the first three episodes of season 1.
The movie had me nodding off a couple of times. The first half of it is great fun, but once Ra and his buddies turn up it seems to grind to a halt. I recognised some of the additional footage, such as the ancient Egypt sequence at the start. I was amused to see French Stewart play his role with exactly the same squint he uses in Third Rock
Then, onto Children Of The Gods, which I had seen before because I used to have the "Best of Season 1" double dvd. However, when I watched it originally it was years after seeing the film. Now, watching it straight after the movie, I really enjoyed it. The continuity between the two was very good, with some nice little in jokes and character references (and one of the actors). I loved Carter's line about it having taken them years to "MacGyver" something or other up  . Again, I found that the second half dragged a little bit, but overall it's much more fun than the movie. That little hook at the end, with Kowalski, was nicely done.
I enjoyed the other two episodes as well. The Enemy Within was very good - the way they dealt with Kowalski in the end was horrible but very amusing. Emancipation was okay in a Trekky kind of way. It was a bit predictable, but good fun.
On to the second disc today

Regarding the movie, agree completely Steve. I loved the first half hour, absolutely intruiging. But, as soon as Ra turned up, or maybe even before that, I usually go with "As soon as they go through the gate.....", it just descends to a frankly, dull level :(
As a kickstart to the series, CHILDREN OF THE GODS works a lot better.
Just don't be too disappointed by some of the early episodes Steve, there are a few clunkers in there, but only a few. Look out for the episodes COLD LAZARUS and THE TORMENT OF TANTALUS, these show SG1 at it's best. And the finale......wow ;)
Glad you're enjoying it. On a positive note, only another 6 3/4 season's worth of episodes to catch up with, and then there's season 8  and Atlantis ;)

Seeing as that's exactly what I wrote about Farscape I can't complain

I think it was picking all the box sets up (to look at - still only got two!) in HMV the other day that threw my back out

Was one of those the one where he lives his life in a few months or something? I seem to remember that one. I saw the finale when I had the original dvds, but I can't remember it very well.

Reading this has made me want to rewatch the first series. It's been years since I saw it. Maybe I'll have to treat myself to the boxset ;)

Think that's BRIEF CANDLE you're talking about there Steve.
The last 3 episodes of the season bascially make up one long season finale, which then concludes in a fourth episode which kicks off season 2.
SOLITUDES is another great one to look out for as well ;)

Oh yes! What was her name in that X Files ep, War Of The Coprophages? Bambi?
I also sat through the Chameleon films. But I don't talk about that. :ph43r:
I enjoyed The Broca Divide. The whole turning into pre-Stone Age creatures was a bit iffy, but I liked the whole idea about bringing diseases back through the gate. And I was pleased it wasn't prevented by some technobabble saying that travel through the stargate immunised them. Obviously it's not something they could get away with doing too often, but I hope they elaborate on that side of things. Don't tell me!

She was in a little-known series named The Cape as well, about the American Space Program.
The only episode that really had me rolling my eyes from the first season was Emancipation, the one with the Chinese clan. Awful.

I remember The Cape. And of course she was in Murder One as well.
Yeah, Emancipation was a bit pants, but it passed the time
Just watched The First Commandment. Interesting idea but not all that well carried off. Cold Lazarus next ;)

I loved The Cape. A pretty decent cast as I recall, Adam Baldwin amongst them.
Murder One, loved the first series, can't remember jack about the second though, other than them getting rid of Daniel Benzali  Season 1's out on DVD in the Autumn :)
I wasn't mad keen on THE FIRST COMMANDMENT, but as you say, COLD LAZARUS next, which is the first of five pretty decent episodes. Enjoy. I'm tempted to dig my copy of said episode out now
willowroolz - July 26, 2004 11:56 AM (GMT)
Up to disc 4 now
I've been enjoying it. Turns out I've seen quite a few of the episodes, or at least parts of them, before. The episodes I've enjoyed the most were The Torment Of Tantalus, Fire And Water, Hathor and Singularity. I watched Singularity last night and thought it was terrific, and it didn't go in the direction that I expected, which is always good. The Torment Of Tantalus was terrific, too. I enjoyed Cold Lazarus, but it got a bit too schmaltzy at the end for me.
I don't think it's any coincidence, either, that the episodes I've liked haven't involved ancient cultures transferred to other planets and running around with silly clothes and sillier hair, although I do appreciate the reasons behind this. I think a lot of the episodes have had interesting twists to them that make them watchable.
I wasn't keen on Thor's Hammer and Bloodlines, or The Nox, which for some reason reminded me too much of the Star Trek TOS episode Errand Of Mercy.
Seven episodes left
Crichton Kicks - July 26, 2004 01:59 PM (GMT)
I'm in the process of d/l all the episodes I don't have on DVD.
Down to the last 12 now and then I've got seasons 1-7 complete :)
willowroolz - July 27, 2004 10:07 PM (GMT)
Finished disc 4 now. I think it was my favourite disc so far - I really enjoyed Singularity, as I said before, and then The Cor-Ai and Solitudes were both terrific (I liked that latter, particularly, with the revelation about the second Stargate in Antarctica).
Great stuff. Only 4 episodes of season 1 to go now :)

The last three in particular are a real treat Steve.
Solitudes is a good episode, important as well.

FINALLY and i mean FINALLY started watching this series.
Thought CHILDREN OF THE GODS was excellent - it is amazing how different from
the movie this is. How much of a difference the change in actors has made. RICHARD DEAN ANDERSON is brillent in the role and much better than Kurt RUSSELL (dont get me wrong I like him as an actor but i couldnt stand the movie of STARGATE). Thought as a pilot it was well written, well paced and a great introduction to the series.
The other two I have watched this morning were not as good but still ok. THE ENEMY WITHIN being a good follow on from the pilot and EMANCIPATION, whilst being a good vehicle for Amanda Tapping I thought was the weakest of the three so far - even if it did have some great comic moments.
Hopefully I will get to watch some more of this show later this weekend, after all I have bought the first 4 seasons so I have a lot of catching up to do

THE BROCA DIVIDE
Is there any show that hasnt done a PLAGUE episode in its first season???
Having said that it was still an enjoyable episode
Hovis - April 19, 2005 03:20 PM (GMT)
Well, I've finally finished watching season one, and started season two. (I'd bought the first dozen or so of those magazine things.... yes they are a rip off, aren't they, but it was a good way of getting into the show. If I'd have known Amazon were going to do rental dvd's I'd never have signed up, but still, hindsight is a beautiful thing!)
Just to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn't know that much about the show, but I'm converted now. Not sure I like it enough to shell out for the dvd's, but I know I want to watch the lot now. Some good episodes here, and terrific characters. Love O'Neill, Jackson, Carter and Teal'c. Don Davis is terrific too as Hammond. I saw Gary Jones too at the London Expo back in October last year... he was very funny, talking about his experiences on the show, so it was great seeing his little appearances.
Last night I watched 'Politics', 'Within the Serpants Grasp' and 'The Serpants Lair.' I looked at 'Politics' and my heart sank, I hate flashback episodes. But the story woven around the flashbacks was compelling... I love Ronny Cox. He's terrific at playing that totally unlikeable sort of character. (He was excellent too in ST:TNG's 'Chain of Command' as Jellico, of course.) The 'Serpant' episodes were fun too, very exciting. A great cliffhanger at the end, and well resolved.
Favourite episode were 'Cold Lazarus', 'Torment of Tantalus', and 'Tin Man', I think.
Season one had a bit of a TNG feel about it, (no bad thing, IMO) and it seemed to me the show found it's feet very quickly and improved throughout the year. Really looking forward to season two now.

One of SG-1's strengths is that when forced to do a flashback episode, they actually make a decent job out of it (compared to the likes of TNG of course :) From what I remember there is on disappointing one to come - not due to it's content though, and one which feels like a rehash of a previous story. However, when they let themselves go, they can make a really good job - the one in Season 8 is extremely well done!

Interesting you quote Tin Man as a good one - personally I found it a bit disappointing..

To be fair, Phillip, I actually enjoyed the entire season, and it was hard, especially after the first 3 or 4, to pick some favourites. I liked the idea behind 'Tin Man' especially, with the transferal of consciousness and all that, even if it is an old sci-fi staple. The scene where the robotic O'Neill slices into his arm was grisly, and very effective.
Looking forward to getting into Season 2 now, but I think my next project will be The West Wing. I've still only seen the first few episodes!
