Description: Episode 92

The one where Spike's sex drive gets the better of him

Crush is a fairly straightforward declaration of love from Spike and it is almost like a televisual loveletter.

I suppose this lays the groundwork for the rest of the season and indeed the rest of the series. It is so important David Fury has to deliver the story in a pretty straightforward manner as Spike has to be seen to be sincere. So the story seemed to me to lack the usual Buffy metaphorical playfulness. The only bit that was perhaps playful was Buffy, Willow and Tara discussing the play at UC Sunnydale where the similarities seemed apparent in the story told.

I loved Buffy at the vampires lair where she responds to Spike saying "there is something between us?" with her rapier like "disgust, revulsion". A truly fine putdown. Spike's bizarre accent when he says "do you think they are a couple of poofters?" helped the joke be more chortlesome.

I also loved Spike losing it when both Buffy and Drusilla fail to respond as he would have hoped. I loved Buffy's "which question do you want me to answer first?" in response to his questioning tirade.

I also liked Buffy responding in a domineering manner after Giles says "Dawn needs normality" so Buffy berates Dawn for apparently stealing her sweater. The twist that Spike stole it so he could ask Harmony to engage in a bit of roleplay is a fine joke.

I loved how Buffy sits in the outline of the victim on the train showing she is a dead woman walking. I guess they are priming us to the events of The Gift.

What I feel Crush needs is a bit of edge. I suppose Drusilla turning up halfway through is a supposed to be the unique selling point but after her exactions with Darla in Angel it all feels a bit perfunctory in comparison.

Buffy's disdain and her comment that "the only chance you had with me was while I was unconscious" feels absolutely right. At least David Fury realised there needed to real antipathy from Buffy while Spike's efforts should come to nothing. At least they should in S5 but I admit the moves made in S6 are very cleverly done. 7/10 sk

Drusilla and Spike up to old times in the Bronze- really nasty.

(Thought: if Drusilla had pigged out on the entire contents of the train, wouldn't she have needed something a little more generous in frocjks for the episode- a size zero or something equally voluminous?)

And the train comes as a bit of a shock, like in series 2 when Sunnydale suddenly acquires a dock.

And come to think of it- think ahead to the hole in the ground which was Sunnydale in the very last episode- where did the coast go?

Mmmm, I'm full of free-associating gems this morning. Must be the sharpened wits( :whistling: ) from recently bingeing on s. 5. Yay!

Drusilla spinning their actions into something close to necrophilia was remarkable though I had completely forgotten it. sk

 for the return of dru, but i would have hoped a better conclusion with her (no, not her to be staked even if she would have had it coming, i mean she killed kendra ............. but she just leave and is never heard of after that <_< )

the return of fool for love spike who try to prove his love to buffy (but even his explanation about who is/was dru for him is not enough to impress buffy), i suppose spike is a too complex character to be able to express his romantic side in any other way than violence when he is rejected. he might also have issue with being rejected by the people he love (like liam issue with his father). buffy showing lack of worry about whatever spike might do to her (maybe because of her discust but most probably because of his chip). i still like spike mad speech (before harmony arrival)

also love the little nod to long fan with the angelus/spike scene when they finally understand that they are not welcome anymore in the summer house, buffy has nearly the same look each time

I really like the scene where buffy is discussing with her mother and willow spike interest

excellent dialogue and ultra-convincing performances

Who'd have thunk then that she'd never turn up again?

One lovely, weird and wonderful, spooky and menacing loose end, just waiting for a nudge (maybe in the comics?)

i would like to have/see dru reaction to spike's soul

Mehitabel - November 14, 2007 02:01 PM (GMT)
Good point-

Hers was not the big final exit we could have expected: I wonder if she'd have made a big comeback if things had been extended?

in buffy or angel?

dru as the season eight big bad (if it had been on TV) :ponder:  a bit repeating season two (just without the sense of danger of angelus) what worse idea than bringing back the smurf (aka the judge) can she have?

Hmmm,

The First as Dru did her worst with Spike- wonder how much worse the real one ccould have been, back in LA?

in angel

wolfran and hard called for her to turn darla

she was following darla for the cellar massacre

i think she can handle herself but not sure she can be in charge or planning something (sure she was scaring book man in surprise but i doubt she would have the same effect to a vampire the size of luke or who don't know her)

But the Dru who walked away from her last meeting with Spike would have been a very promisingly-raving rejected Drusilla- I mean: heartbroken Dru on the rampage we've never seen...

I wish :fear:

prophecy girl - November 20, 2007 07:20 PM (GMT)
well i would like to see whatever she did between her last scene with spike (fool for love  ) and her arrival in angel, apart probably dating a few demons

Mehitabel - November 21, 2007 02:02 PM (GMT)
I think those cunning writers are tying us in knots- Drusilla's last visit to Spike is after she's beeen half-fried in Angel... when do we ever see her again, otehr than in flashbacks or as the First?

Confused, but not in a bad way...

prophecy girl - November 21, 2007 02:24 PM (GMT)
last seen in angel season five (flashback) .... last time it was in the girl in question :naughty:
