SCI FI Channel has renewed its hit original series Stargate Atlantis for a 20-episode fifth season. Produced and distributed by MGM Television, Stargate Atlantis is set to resume production in early 2008. Its fourth season is currently airing Fridays at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
The fourth season premiered on Sept. 28 and delivered more than 2 million viewers. The new season added two new regular cast members: Amanda Tapping, formerly of Atlantis' predecessor series, Stargate SG-1, and Jewel Staite, formerly of Firefly and Serenity. |

Surprising that it's announced so early.
It'll be interesting to see if Tapping stays with the show next year though, AFAIK she was only contracted for one more year of Stargate when they moved her across to Atlantis this year.

That's what i heard, but i think there's an interview with one of the writers on gateworld saying that they'd like to keep her on for the 5th season.
I think a few fans would like to see the return of Weir in S5, doubt that will happen though.
I'm glad it's got a 5th season because i think that gives the show a good opportunity to finish off most of their storylines. I'm not sure it should go on too much longer after that, cos they're bound to run out of good ideas one day after technically 15 seasons worth of stargate stories and Stargate Universe spin off starting next year as well.

SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate Atlantis will begin production later this month on its fifth season, the channel announced. The 20-episode season will include the series' benchmark 100th episode.
Fan favorite Paul McGillion will return for five episodes to reprise his role as Dr. Carson Beckett. Amanda Tapping (Col. Samantha Carter) will appear as a special guest star in several episodes, and Stargate SG-1 star Michael Shanks (Dr. Daniel Jackson) will appear as a special guest in episodes as well.
Hi light to read
Robert Picardo, who plays International Oversight Committee rep Richard Woolsey, joins the Atlantis cast this season as Woolsey assumes command of the Atlantis expedition. The team, led by Lt. Col. Sheppard (Joe Flanigan), Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett), Teyla (Rachel Luttrell), Ronon (Jason Momoa) and Dr. Jennifer Keller (Jewel Staite), must adjust to his unique leadership style.
In the fifth season, the status quo is shaken following the events of season four. friends are lost, others are found. New alliances are forged while new races are introduced.
Produced and distributed by MGM Television, Stargate Atlantis is filmed in Vancouver, Canada. The series is executive-produced by Brad Wright, Robert Cooper, Joseph Mallozzi, Paul Mullie, Carl Binder and Martin Gero. Mallozzi and Mullie share the reins as show runners. |

Glad to see Beckett returning, he should never have been written out in the first place IMO.
The spoiler sounds interesting as well.

changes (spoiler warning)

One thing really going against Atlantis, and one of the things that sets SG1 apart from it is the stability issue. SG1 had plenty of changes later in the series but essentially had 5 solid years of no changes. Atlantis, casting-wise, has been in turmoil since the end of the first season.
Re the casting news; they're still missing the opportunity to bring back McGillion fulltime. They really misjudged his popularity when they let him go, and whilst a five-episode return is great news, it's still less than ideal.
Re Momoa, have to admit, if he leaves, it'll really hurt the show IMO.

I totally agree, on both points.
Although, by and large, I think they are mostly 50:50 on the casting changes so far, season 1-4. I much prefer Ronan to Ford, and I always disliked Weir, or was at the best indifferent to her. As much as I love Paul McGillion (and ask Alex just how far my hero worship goes  ) I almost love the addition of Jewel as much, though in a perfect world they would both exist, Keller being a new addition to the team or something.
I am not as fazed by the reported cast changes as some people seem to be, mostly because I think the PTB have made (mostly) good decisions previously and I am excited to what they have in store for us now ;)

Never wanted to see Weir or Beckett leave but i agree if they lose Ronan now and replace him with someone else they're going to ruin the show, hope he doesn't go. I was hoping Weir would return for at least a few eps, maybe the actress will chnage her mind.
I have a strange feeling that Season 5 will be the last :( .

To be honest, I agree, I begrudgingly think that next year may be the last season.
Depends on what circumstances are in play and how much attention they want/have to give to Universe and any further SG1 movies.

I don't want it to be the last season, but the way they're headed it might be. My fingers are crossed for a 6th season as well, but at least the show will have had 100 episodes if it does end at season 5. If there are more eps like Lifeline, This Mortal Coil, BAMSR, Spoils of War, Midway then i would expect the series to be renewed. Lets hope the writers have come up with some fantastic episodes and storylines.

I've heard talks that Stargate Atlantis will premier the new season earlier than usual in the US this year, is this true? Will Sky One air them early too? On the subject of Stargate, will Sky One be airing Stargate: Continuum like they did with The Ark of Truth back in Easter? Finally, remaining on the same franchise, any news on the proposed spin-off Stargate Universe?
Sion
Neil: Gosh, you know how to get value for your money Sion. Remind me to give you a call when I'm planning my next Ocado order. Season five of Atlantis premieres in the US in a couple weeks, then airs here on Sky One from August 19. Continuum airs a week earlier. Stargate Universe is still very much in development, and is likely to air towards the back end of 2009 if it gets the go-ahead. |

series "regular" Torri Higginson as Dr. Elizabeth Weir
update

^^ Surely series 'not so' regular now!
TV Crazy - July 6, 2008 09:38 PM (GMT)
I had wanted her to return as they'd left the storyline open, even if just to close or finish off her story. Still don't think Atlantis will ever be as good without her and i know a lot of people disagree, but don't think the leader for S5 will work.
