Spooks spin-off set for BBC Three

Spooks is one of BBC One's most popular programmes

An "action packed" spin-off from the popular BBC One drama Spooks is being planned for BBC Three.
Rogue Spooks, the drama's working title, will follow young MI5 recruits who "follow a different rule book".

BBC Three controller Julian Bellamy revealed the plans at the launch of the channel's winter and spring schedule.

Mr Bellamy said comedy remained "at the heart" of the digital channel, with six new comedy shows set to debut over the forthcoming season.

'Common sense'

Rogue Spooks, which BBC Three hopes to broadcast later next year, follows on the heels of Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood, which gave BBC Three its biggest, non-sport audience.

More than 2.4 million tuned in for the first episode in October.

Mr Bellamy denied that the channel was playing it safe by commissioning another spin-off, adding that "big, high-concept drama" was the way forward for the channel.

He said: "There is a logic linking big-scale dramas to a known brand and a world that you know viewers love.

"But it doesn't rule out our ability to do new titles.

Man Stroke Woman is back for second series

"Spooks is a known and popular brand, so Rogue Spooks seems like a common sense thing to do."

Man Stroke Woman, Ideal and Ron Brydon's Annually Retentive all return to BBC Three in the channel's winter and spring season.

Comedies Gavin and Stacey, Thieves Like Us, and Touch Me, I'm Karen Taylor will debut on BBC Three in the new season.

Rush Hour is a brand-new comedy sketch show set in the morning rush hour, and Smalltime is a comedy set in a prison visiting room .

Comedian Rob Rouse will host Comedy Shuffle - a new talent showcase for comic performers, writers and animators.

For the first time, BBC Three has commissioned a broadband-only comedy - The Cowards - a four-man act who will take over the BBC Three website.

The Baby Borrowers will see teens fast-tracked into adulthood

Food will play a big part in BBC Three's factual schedule.

Meat, presented by BBC Two's Full On Food's Richard Johnson, will see animals slaughtered on screen as the host attempts to demystify the process of how food ends up on our plates.

In Road Kill Cafe, professional forager and road-kill chef Fergus Drennan tries to persuade the public that eating road-kill is acceptable.

BBC Three's Body Image season will return with Lucy: Teenage and Transsexual, Me and My Man Breasts and How Young Can I Get? among others.

The channel launches its Coming of Age season with The Baby Borrowers - an ambitious social experiment which sees five teenage couples looking after children from a range of age groups, from babies to adolescents.

Mr Bellamy said: "BBC Three is firing on all cylinders this winter/spring with a huge range of home-grown programmes - not seen anywhere else in the digital world - and giving our younger audience an incredibly rich and diverse mix."

Joanne Froggatt to star in Spooks Liberty on BBC3
06/02/2008

Showbiz picturesI-spy with my little eye something familiar about the star of the forthcoming Spooks spin-off.

She played John Simm's mum in Life On Mars and now Joanne Froggatt will star in Spooks Liberty on BBC3. Those with longer memories may remember Joanne as troubled Zoe Tattersall in Coronation Street (the lass who went off and joined a cult in America).

Joanne - Bafta-nominated for her role in Danielle Cable: Eyewitness - plays the leader of a gang of young maverick MI5 recruits who "follow their own rulebook".

My spy reports: "The action takes place in Manchester because London has been wiped out by a nuclear attack.

"Half of MI5 were killed in the disaster, so it's down to a bunch of new recruits to sort things out. They are rather less conventional than what's gone before.

"The idea is to appeal to young viewers - this is BBC3's answer to E4's Skins."

Joanne and her gang of crime-fighters leap into action later in the year. Baddies beware!

Top secret filming in city!

thetelegraphandargus.co.uk - Bradford

By David Barnett

Listen very carefully, because I will say this only once A highly-covert team of super-secret spies has taken up residence in the heart of Bradford, and could be walking among you even as you read this.

Official sources are remaining tight-lipped, but it is understood that a film and television production company with the codename "Kudos" has commandeered the former police station at the Tyrls off Centenary Square.

They are believed to be filming a spin-off series from the popular BBC1 spy drama Spooks, featuring a younger cast and set in the "near future", possibly around the time of the 2012 Olympics, when a terrorist nuclear attack on London has wiped out the secret service's headquarters at Thames House.

It is left to a team of rookie agents "who don't play by the rules" to take over Britain's security work. The Tyrls is thought to be doubling for their headquarters in Manchester.

Names linked to the project include hot young British talent such as Joanne Froggatt, who recently appeared in Life on Mars and before that Coronation Street; Liam Boyle (The Street, The Bill); Georgia Moffett, who is the daughter of Peter Davison and Sandra Dickinson; Ruta Gedmintas (The Tudors); Christopher Simpson (the West Yorkshire-set movie Mischief Night) and Andrew Knott, who was in the movie version of Alan Bennett's play The History Boys.

The main series of Spooks, starring Peter Firth as MI5 boss Harry and Rupert Penry-Jones as troubled agent Adam, has run to six series so far. The spin-off is expected to be aired this year on BBC3 and is aimed at a more youthful audience.

When the Telegraph & Argus approached Kudos we were met with a wall of silence. However, after making representations that the story was a matter of public interest, the T&A did get a brief chat with one secret source.

The not-so-Deep Throat revealed: "At the moment the series is called Spooks: Liberty, but that is just a working title. We won't be able to say what it will be called until details have been approved with the BBC."

The series has also had a previous working title, called Rogue Spooks. When asked if we could have access to the filming at the Tyrls we were told: "Absolutely not. It is a completely closed set. I'm afraid we can't confirm or deny anything about it at the moment."

The major player in this story seems to be the "BBC", which is understood to be a quasi-autonomous public corporation, funded from the public purse via central Government control.

A spokesman for the organisation said: "We haven't really got any press material for the new series yet because it's still in production."

However, documents classified as Above Top Secret and obtained by the T&A (okay, found on the floor of the NCP car park on Hall Ings) reveal certain details about the production, including the facts that the agents' headquarters in the Tyrls are designated "MI5 Field Office 19", one episode features a scene in a massage parlour and a university study hall, where someone gets shot in the head, and there is no smoking, eating or drinking on set at any time, although breakfast is generally about 7am.

More details will follow as our investigations continue.

'Spooks' spinoff heading to BBC Three
Tuesday, March 25 2008, 12:18 GMT

By Beth Hilton, Entertainment Reporter

A Spooks spinoff called Code 9 is heading to BBC Three.

The new spy drama is currently being shot in Bradford and is scheduled to hit screens later this year.

It opens in 2013, when London has been evacuated in the wake of a nuclear bomb. Thames House has gone and MI5 is forced to set up offices across the UK in an attempt to help Britain fend off attacks.

The series focuses on the six spooks recruited to help make up the new Field Office 19.

The team is led by experienced spook Hannah (Joanne Froggatt, Life On Mars) and consists of mathematician and problem solver Charlie (Liam Boyle, Drop Dead Gorgeous), ex-police officer Rachel (Ruta Gedmintas, The Tudors) and Jez (Heshima Thompson, Prime Suspect: The Final Act) a former criminal gone straight.

The new office is rounded out by Vik (Christopher Simpson,
Brick Lane), junior doctor Rob (Andrew Knott, The History Boys) and Kylie (Georgia Moffett, Doctor Who), a psychology student who has just returned from her gap year.

The show is made by Kudos Film & Television, the team behind Spooks and Life On Mars.

The spinoff, originally titled Rogue Spooks, was first announced in 2006.

Filming starts on Spooks spin-off
Filming has started on a Spooks spin-off for BBC Three.
The new spy drama, titled Spooks: Code 9, is currently being shot in Bradford and will hit screens later this year.

The drama is set in 2013, when London has been evacuated following a nuclear attack, and MI5 must establish field offices across the UK.

The series, starring Joanne Froggatt, focuses on the six young spies recruited to help set up the new Field Office 19.

'Action-packed'

She plays Hannah, who leads a team of rookie spies which includes a mathematician, ex-police officer, a former criminal gone straight, a junior doctor and a student.

Producer Chris Fry said: "After the bomb, MI5 needed new officers with ability, dedication and potential on the streets as soon as possible.

"With the exception of their team leader, none of them have been in the field for more than four months and they will continually find themselves in situations beyond their experience and training - they'll only succeed through grit and determination."

BBC Fiction controller Jane Tranter said: "It's brilliant to have the chance of looking into the future of Spooks with Spooks: Code 9 on BBC Three.

"The series promises to be as entertaining and action-packed as Spooks on BBC One has always been, whilst bringing a more maverick, younger perspective."
