Title: Dushku Stays Tru
LoobiLou - July 19, 2004 07:17 PM (GMT)
Eliza Dushku, who stars in Fox's supernatural series Tru Calling, told SCI FI Wire that her character will embrace her gift in the upcoming second season and use it to fight her nemesis, played by new regular cast member Jason Priestley. "I'm excited to see this next season go on and especially with Jason coming into the mix, because now Tru has, in a sense, shown her power," Dushku said in an interview during the network's fall press preview in Los Angeles. "I know I'm going to use it to get into this battle. Now it's on, and she owns her power, and I think she's going to find so many more colors and so many more strengths."
In the final episode of the first season, the show took a dark turn when viewers discovered that Tru's father killed her mother and that Priestley's character was a villain. Dushku promised that the upcoming season will include more surprises. "There's going to be a lot of mysterious twists this year," she said. "There's going to be guest stars coming on that I can't talk about now, even though I really want to. But it's going to be a great year."
Dushku said she was anxious to get back to work on July 20, when the season premiere begins filming. "I'm freaking out," she said. "I'm excited, though. I feel like last year. I'm like thrilled and terrified at the same time. But mostly I'm excited. I can't wait to see [co-stars] Zach [Galifianakis] and Shawn [Reaves]. I had such a good time. My cast and crew were so amazing. I can't wait to go interact with everybody again." Tru Calling returns for a second season in November in its regular 9 p.m. ET/PT Thursday timeslot.

Pity they couldn't have done the same for Wondefalls, or Firefly.

I kinda gave up after the first few eps of Tru Calling. Did it get any better?
Michelle - July 19, 2004 07:33 PM (GMT)
I've still only seen the pilot, and have no burning desire to see any more. :)

You have to wonder if Fox have somewhat learned a small lesson from the way Firefly has refused to die. Especially given that another of their once-cancelled shows Family Guy has been resurrected from the dead as well thanks to massive DVD sales.
Their cancellation of Firefly, FG and John Doe p*ssed me off no end, then there was Dark Angel as well, although I never watched that, but I'm told it was good. Futurama was another one. "It's different from The Simpsons, we expected The Simpsons, cancel it....."

It kind of meandres along for the majority of the season, introducing a few small, and later larger arcs. The last 3 or 4 were quite interesting and actually give me hope for season 2. Think Quantum Leap and the Evil Leaper arc ;)

Dark Angel is still the one I hate them the most for cancelling.

My brother's got DA on DVD, keep meaning to borrow it off him when I have the chance.
Wonder how many people didn't watch Firefly on the principle that Firefly was effectively the reason Fox cancelled DA ??

I have to admit that childish notion did cross my mind - part of me wanted it to fail in the forlorn hope DA could be resurrected. Especially when they reversed the cancellation for a few days after seeing the original Firefly pilot.
However I watched Firefly and that banished the idea.
I still much prefer DA though I have to say.

A show I loved for a time while it was on was Earth 2. Only lasted a season. It was renewed and then ended up being cancelled during the summer hiatus.
Cancellation's bad enough as it is, without screwing people around and reversing decisions

I've seen a few episodes of Tru Calling now and I think it's a watchable program which is good for something to do when you're stuck at a loose end.
It's nowhere near as good as any other Sci-Fi program except for Mutant X (sorry but I know someone will agree with me).
BUT the main problem I have with it is that it completely is trying to rip off Buffyverse. Not a single episode goes by without trying to emphasise how Tru is all alone with her 'GIFT' and will not hesitate to drop in words such as ANGEL and FAITH.
Also I can't see how they can keep it fresh for this coming 2nd season.
Nick :)

Hi Nick. Don't think I've said hello yet, so welcome :)
Tru taking over the Buffyverse mantle ?? Hmm, next year'll be the first year in over a decade with no fresh Whedon material on the smallscreen. I don't mind Tru trying to fill the gap, as long as it does the role justice. It wouldn't based on the first season. They'd need to increase the quality of the writing dramatically. Although, one of the Angel writers is going over there, so we can hope I guess :)
I enjoyed the first season. For the most part it was standalone, which makes it great "sit, watch, don't stress" TV, but the arc introduced towards the end will probably make it a little more compelling next term. We'll see I guess :)

Thanks for the welcome Angel :)
I agree with you on the filling of the gap - there is precious little else, I'm even watching ST:VGR again again!
It's a bit too stand alone though don't you think, and it's hitting a soap opera level for the amount it actually stimulates.
I would like to see it be more of its own show than making cryptic references to btvs - take the ep about the bloke killing on Valentine's Day - at the end where Tru's relationship disintegrates, where have we seen that before - answer Buffy & Riley (spit spit).
I am still going to watch the 2nd series and yeah I hold a similar amount of hope due to the strengthened writing team.
Also is it just me or does she not look as good as Tru as she did as Faith, and I can't identify what the difference is? Any thoughts?

The definite air of power and the possible air of pyschosis?

She washed her hair for Tru Calling
Less of the dark make up, and less of the dark clothes. She looks a little washed out ,in Tru to be honest :)

Faith was a great character. Hot in every sense of the word. With Tru we're probably spoiled with the "jigglevision" predominant throughout a lot of the series ;)

:D :D @ Lisa
Maybe you're right Neil and Angel, although Tru has the added benefit of being better educated and lacking inane comments such as 'five by five' ;)
Maybe I like the bimbo in Faith or should I say raw animal nature, hmmmm, still confused...

I like watching Tru but I don't mind if I miss an episode or even if I miss the begining, after all you get to see it all again in the second half.
The thing that strikes me about Tru is how much she runs. It's like, "Oooo, I need to be at the diner in 2 minutes to save the old lady from spilling coffee on the orphan child sitting near her, I know, I'll run there in my ridiculously high-heels, which I only wear because I'm so much shorter than all the other people round here" Is it worth it?
