Title: New 20007 show: REAPER
Description: Playing it safe
TV Yank - September 28, 2007 06:15 AM (GMT)
REAPER is a very easy-going, very middle-of-the-road comedy/action series. Take one hapless young man who just turns 21 and learns that his soul belongs to the  who uses him as a bounty hunter of sorts. Add a goofy friend and a pretty co-worker. Have him live at home and work in retail in soggy Seattle (altho filmed near soggier Vancouver Canada).
The pilot came close to sagging in the middle but stayed on its feet. A pleasant enuf diversion if the competition on the other networks is slight.
Lead actor Bret Harrison is serviceable -- and American. Few of the regular cast members are. His goofy friend is played by Tyler Labine (Canadian), the pretty co-worker by Missy Peregrym (Canadian), his mother by the lovely Canadian actress Allison Hossack , etc, etc. At least Satan is played by a Yank :yahoo:  who has a familiar face but less familiar name -- Ray Wise. And, in a what-a-coincidence moment, the wonderful Canadian actress Christine Willes from the reaper-themed DEAD LIKE ME had a small part (I doubt that it's a regular part --I was slightly wrong about Christine's frequency count  ).

I missed most of Ep 2 which bums me out since Allison was looking pretty yummy.
She didn't appear at all in Ep 3 and I missed her. Which says something about the series itself. Plus, this particular episode had me thinking of a similar gimmick in BUFFY.
In Episode 4, Allison appeared for one scene but the story was interesting enuf. Ray Wise as the devil livens up the screen whenever he appears. I hope he doesn't go all Dr. Smith (LOST IN SPACE) on us. And I heard a British (or British-type) accent in this one (I've been hearing a lot of them in guest spots recently.)

Twin Peaks was hugely successful over here; I think quite a few*cough* older *cough* people would recognise the name - I certainly did. ;)

1/12 - Pilot This bizarre but boisterous variant on the slacker sitcom sees Sam Oliver (Brett Harrison) discovering, on his 21st birthday, that his parents sold his soul to the Devil before he was born. As you do. Now Satan (Ray Wise, see the Inside Story below) comes calling and wants Sam to be his personal bounty hunter, so the initially reluctant recruit gets his loser friend Sock (Tyler Labine, the real star here) to assist. It's a wacko premise, but there are some solid laughs and a pleasing grunge soundtrack, plus distinctly non sitcom- budget effects that tap into the superhero (or should that be antihero?) market. And if the writers stick with the interplay between no-hopers Sam and Sock (think Shaun of the Dead meets Bill and Ted), Reaper could gather a lot of friends along the way.

few question to be answered in the next season: sam real father, what the heck going on with Sam's parent? ("what took you so long? :ponder: ), did steve really go to heaven, ....???
 sock saving the day even if he lost a year (or probably more :naughty: ) of his life
an excellent first season
