Title: New 2007 show: THE BIG BANG THEORY
Description: Familiar fun

TV Yank - September 25, 2007 06:10 AM (GMT)
This joins the herd of shows with super-bright geeks as heroes or leading men. It's not breakthru comedy. It's not daring or different... well... there was one thing I've never seen for an entire episode: the sound was heard a split-second before the mouths moved. Did CBS really think that would be a selling point? :ponder:

Typical of these shows, the non-geek writers stole directly from science popularizations (why would science geniuses need to explain the double-slit experiment to each other?).

But I enjoyed its familiarity. And Kaley Cuoco in a towel. :naughty: And I found it easy to root for them. And I'll do the same next week, too.

And Kaley Cuoco

Thanks for giving me a good reason to avoid it :)

But she's like the perfect ditz... :innocent:

I have to admit she pales compared to the Aussi on CHUCK (which is opposite THE BIG BANG THEORY) with the intriguing name of Yvonne Strzechowski. Not classically pretty but the camera loves her -- and she's a good actress.

I had to endure her in Charmed when my wife was watching it :) And while Charmed's not the greatest series, it has some entertainment value, of which she contributed absolutely squat, and in fact made it worse :)

CHARMED scripts made a LOT of actors look bad. :(

Ep 1.02. Still enjoying it. Not screamingly funny nor boldly original. Just nerds wistfully dealing with a sexy neighbor. I don't know how long they can keep up this premise.

Kaley Cuoco has the right appeal for this type of show -- dim and cheaply sexy. The actors as nerdy types are very good, especially the leads Johnny Galecki and Jim Parsons, but Simon Helberg doesn't get lost in the group. Unfortunately, Kunal Nayyar's role as someone unable to talk to pretty girls is very limiting.

I heard that the pilot's ratings were pretty dim too, so I'll have to enjoy it while I can.

Haven't watched this yet, but I have seen that the ratings for the second episode weren't that bad. Comfortably saw off How I Met Your Mother, and just edged out fellow newcomers Journeyman and Chuck.

The worst comedy I've seen in the last 12 months is Til Death. If that can stay on the air then pretty much anything can. I gave up after about 5 episodes. In hindsight I'm surprised that it took me that long.....

Five episodes, James?! :toomuchtv:

I didn't bother to tune to TIL DEATH based on what I saw in the promos. The ratings haven't been good - yet it survives.

However, to look on the positive side: if you think TIL DEATH is the worst comedy you've seen in a while, try ALIENS IN AMERICA :shit: probably the worse comedy in a couple decades.

I downloaded the pilot episode of that a while ago John, just never got around to watching it. Didn't exactly sound like it was going to be a great show. Based on your less than glowing reference, I doubt I'll bother now!

Til Death, I watched purely for Eddie Kay Thomas. For better or for worse I really enjoyed Off Centre a few years ago, and the first couple of American Pie movies. Sadly, truly awful writing and completely unfunny storylines dampen any chance the series has of being funny. Brad Garrett may actually be one of the unfunniest people on the planet. I'm not entirely sure if that's down to him, or the woeful scripts.

Oooh, I watched that, too - it also had Sean Maguire and John Cho - I thought it was pretty funny. :)

Yeah, that's the one. Aside from Maguire as the stereotypical Brit toff, it was very good. It was already cancelled by the time I got to see it and I feared the worst. I was very pleasantly surprised. Shame it was on a duff network.
