Title: New Board Layout
willowroolz - September 5, 2007 07:23 AM (GMT)
Like it, James
My only comment at the moment is that I'm not sure it's worth having a separate board for NYPD Blue, I think I'm practically the only person still watching it
Oh, and would it be worth having some new banners or skins to further freshen things up? And if there were some smaller banners we could use in signatures on other boards to advertise the place... :ponder:

I had a quick scan of the US Drama boards and tried to identify which boards there had the highest traffic, and then set them up with their own board.
The boards will be a work in progress, at least in the short term. They'll have to be. With the new season approaching, and plenty of new shows due to start, we'll probably need to make room for them somewhere. To this end, I'll be keeping an eye on the boards with a view to identifying which ones are successful and those that aren't. If boards aren't being used, for lengthy periods of time, we'll probably replace them with more relevant ones.
The banners idea is a very good one Steve. I'll take a look around later on when I get home :)

In NYPD's case, that'd be me talking to myself

Maybe. Depends where you are. I've still got the Seasons 2, 3 & 4 boxsets to get through!

So what you're saying there is, that you've nearly finished, and will shortly be back at the beginning again and hence, close to Season 2...... :ph43r:

I think you're confusing it with Farscape :p
Actually, Sipowicz does look a bit like Rygel... :ponder:

^^ Who?
I've been trying to get around to finishing off season 4 for that long now, I may as well just go back to the beginning.....

Just a quick question - Has the What are you reading section gone or can I just not find it ?
And Oooh, exciting new layout !

First of all thanks to all those responsible for the reshuffle.
Seems good to me - as has been mentioned I’m not sure NYPD Blue and The West Wing warrant their own sections but you’ve answered that. I would also say that I reckon ‘Classic Cult ‘ ‘ Classic Drama ‘ etc sounds better than Golden but that’s just me. :) Nice to see comedy getting its own section as it was rather hidden away before and I was going to suggest a British TV section but I’m sure the British Drama will cover it.
One thing I would do would be to send an e-mail to everyone who is still registered to let them now about the re-vamp and ask their thoughts, if nothing else you should get a few people coming back to have a look out of curiosity who then might end up staying & posting a bit more. :ponder:
buffy_fan1 - September 5, 2007 06:26 PM (GMT)
I like the reshuffle well done thank you to everyone who made it happen! It made me a little sad I realised that most my favourite shows are now Golden Cult TV sections. I will it use as push to try and fine current shows to watch as well as the classics.
Outta Sight - September 5, 2007 06:31 PM (GMT)
God, you move fast, James :lmao:
But, seriously, thank you for setting it all in place so swiftly
I've only had a cursory span down at the boards at the moment but the only comment I would make is that maybe there's too many "other" boards
People have always had a hard time defining what is cult and what is drama and, in some cases, what is comedy  And I see already that, although there is a dedicated board for Dexter, there has also been a thread started on another board.
Maybe we need to simplify it even further and take out some of the "other" boards  Especially since people may not look at all the boards when there are so many.
As I said, I've not had a good look yet, but am about to  So I could be totally wrong in which case I will be back with abject apologies shortly
Crichton Kicks - September 5, 2007 07:37 PM (GMT)
Cheers for the feedback guys
I prefer 'Classic' to 'Golden'. Knocking up the new format last night I was caught in one of those moments where I couldn't quite put my finger on the word I wanted, so I settled on 'Golden'. 'Classic' was the word that eluded me  I think I'll change that over later, cheers for that one
Katie,
There does seem to be a few 'Other' boards, but I think in the short term at least they'll help keep things straight. I think we've always had certain problems in definition before because we've had the potential there for ambiguity. I think, or more hope, that we can classify shows between Drama and Cult, and New or Golden/Classic. My definition would be that if any show incorporated any elements of science fiction or fantasy then I'd classify them as being Cult. Lost is possibly the best example I can think of at the moment. It could be argued to be drama, but for me, there are too many elements of the fantastic there, so I'd call it cult myself. The distinction between New and Classic is fairly obvious, currently airing = New, not currently airing = Classic. Causes for ambiguity here might be stuff like Farscape, when the new webisodes air. Personally, unless it's a full-blown return to regular television I'd probably still classify that as 'classic'.
That's my take, but I'm quite open to whatever interpretations you guys would like to go with.
Let's see how the 'Other' boards work, and if they don't, we can look to get rid of a few if needs be. :)
Re: Dexter, the thread in the other board (not the Dexter board), was the one originally in the 'US & British Drama' board. Whilst I set up the new boards last night, there will still be the odd thread that may need moving across into a new board. The Dexter one was one such thread, I've now moved into the main Dexter forum. You'll possibly find more over the next couple of days at least. If you do come across any, please let me know and I'll get the shifted.
Cheers again for all the feedback though guys

Just a thought, but would it be possible to have one of those `Next 5 days ` thingies at the bottom of the homepage which link to a calendar and tell you ( for instance ) premieres on TV ? :)
Karen ( Kudz) has one on the
Alias_UK board. :D
Crichton Kicks - September 5, 2007 09:50 PM (GMT)
I'll have a look into that. Off hand, I have no idea how to set that up, but I'll try and find out :)
Persephone - September 6, 2007 01:29 PM (GMT)
The board looks great James, it's probably needed an overhaul for a while
Might be an idea to add a 'request for forum' section in the board feedback board. Depending on how the new season shapes up, looks like there will be a few new shows that could stick around for longer than 3 weeks anyway....
Crichton Kicks - September 6, 2007 11:34 PM (GMT)
Sarah,
The 7 days ahead calendar has been reinstated. This can be accessed via the 'Calendar' button in the top righthand corner of the page. There you can add in any relevant entries, such as tv premieres etc.
Lisa,
Top idea. I've added the 'Board Request' board to the 'Board Feedback' forum.

Glad you did change 'Golden' to 'Classic' I think it does fit better. :)
Crichton Kicks - September 11, 2007 10:16 PM (GMT)
^^ Agreed. Took me a while to settle on 'golden'. Try as I might I just couldn't come up with 'classic'!
Sarah,
You should now be able to add events to the calendar. There was an obscure setting that I hadn't changed. Now sorted and anyone and everyone should be able to update the calendar.

Errrm.....am I being Mr observant guy or has the member fiction section gone missing......?
Crichton Kicks - October 12, 2007 05:24 PM (GMT)
Had me worried for a moment there!
It's been merged into the general books & comics section. Doesn't look like there's anything in there newer than 30 days old, so you need to change it to show threads from further back than that. Just had a quick scan and there are some fan fic threads there
The last watcher - October 13, 2007 06:34 AM (GMT)

James, I keep meaning to ask, why do some forums have a `from the beginning` default and others have the `last 30 days` one ?
Would it be possible to change all of them to `from the beginning ` or is there a reason for keeping the 30 day thingy ? :)
Crichton Kicks - October 13, 2007 02:56 PM (GMT)
Have to admit, I hadn't noticed that Sarah.
I'll take a look later on and change them all over if I can. Makes more sense I think just to have them all 'from the beginning'.
little pixie - October 13, 2007 05:04 PM (GMT)
Thanks James. :)
I only noticed when threads got moved into the new drama forums and ` disappeared`. ;)
Crichton Kicks - October 13, 2007 06:37 PM (GMT)
Well they should all be changed over now!
