The one where the first Slayer tries to kill the scoobies as they sleep.

The last truly great episode of Buffy.

I cannot believe how engrossing and fast Restless feels. I like art which is a lot cleverer than I am as I like to feel stretched and Restless certainly falls into that category.

Maybe the closest relative to Restless is Apocalypse Now as they are both examples of dreamscape genius.

The main theme of Willow's dream seem to be existential feelings of being a fraud in her heart of hearts and being exposed as being such.

Xander's dream seems to be about his inability to remain focused or even comprehend those around him thereby forcing him back into the basement.

Giles's dream seemed the most obvious scouting his sense of loss about not having a normal family life.

Buffy's dream is the hardest to understand it seemed to me. Maybe it was partially scouting Buffy's anxieties about challenging a male dominated world. As part of the supernatural story there was also the challenge to the past where Buffy wants to say she has a link to the past but she has moved on from the primeval first Slayer.

I loved how the segments moved from being mystical almost comic to being dramatic. Armin Shimerman's turn as Kurtz is both dramatic and the right kind of absurd. Anthony shows remarkable stage presence as he delivers some fun exposition.

One of the problems with Restless has to be how hard to interpret the main segments. I do not know much about Death Of A Salesman for instance. There is the problem of either not trying hard enough or pushing so hard you end up with Aristotle. It was a bit helpful that Joss said the cheeseman was a bit of absurdity about dreams so his appearance feels comical rather than having to scan ones internal interpretative bag of tricks.

There are many things I don't understand. Why does Willow write on Tara's back other than to show some kind of lesbo-eroticism? What is the play about? Why does Harmony irritate Giles? What is the significance of the playground? Why is Spike being some kind of celebrity other than perhaps an in-joke about David Boreanaz famously doing publicity shots? Why does Buffy apply mud to her face? Why is Joyce in the wall?

I love it that Joss tries to be so ambitious and adopts so many styles to try and tell his story. 9/10. sk

love it or hate it, a very different kind of plot that might confuse anyone but a very intriguing episode.

There are good things: Principal Snyder’s Apocalypse Now cameo, The spirit of the First Slayer is a good idea, and kinda hints at the dark side of slaying that may be explored in the next season (or just tell us next season is going to be darker) . there are funny bits and also confusing bits (cheese guy anyone), just when you start to get the plot or start to give, something new and unexpected happens (giles and anya speaking french  , giles singing  ,....)

buffy telling what the what to the first slayer is excellent and show that she finally accepted her destiny but she want to do it her way (she refused the watcher council order now she refused the first slayer approach to slaying .......), imo
