The cast and crew of Criminal Minds got a bit of a surprise earlier this week when they gathered for a script read of the show's upcoming season. As everyone prepped their parts, they noticed one thing was missing--the show's star.
Mandy Patinkin, who plays special agent Jason Gideon on the CBS drama, did not show up for the mandatory read-through, according to E! Online. Citing a pair of anonymous sources, the Web site says that Patinkin may no longer be with the show.
CBS has not issued a public statement on the matter, and The Hollywood Reporter speculates that a salary dispute may be at the heart of the standoff. (Note: CBS has in fact issued a statement. See below for update.)
Patinkin is a veteran of stage and screen, and has won an Emmy Award as Dr. Jeffrey Geiger on Chicago Hope and Tony Awards for his roles in Evita and Sunday in the Park with George. He is probably best known as the suave swordsman Inigo Montoya in the film The Princess Bride.
[UPDATE--July 16] ABC Studios and CBS Paramount Network Television sent out a statement today confirming Patinkin's departure from Criminal Minds, citing "creative differences."
The statement reads: "Last week Mandy Patinkin asked to be released from his role on Criminal Minds. We have honored this request, which was not in any way connected to contract renegotiations or salary issues. His [character's] departure from the series will be explained to audiences in an episode to be filmed in the near future and broadcast early next season. We thank Mandy for helping to make Criminal Minds a strong and successful series, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors. A new character will be added to the series for next season."
A statement on behalf of Mandy Patinkin was also included: "Due to creative differences, Mandy has asked not to return to Criminal Minds this season. Mandy would like to thank the studios and network for releasing him from the series and wishes the cast and crew continued success in all of their endeavors, and he looks forward to continuing to work with the Disney and CBS companies in other capacities in the future."
Details on the show's new cast member have not yet been announced. |
Very disappointing. Criminal Minds is a decent show and Patinkin has been fantastic leading it. Other reports that I've read around his departure seem to suggest that they've been very kind to him in the above article in explaining Patinkin's conduct around the whole situation.

Word is that Geena Davis is being tapped to be Patinkin's replacement. Not a bad choice, if you ask me.

Urgh
I fear that'll be the end of me watching Criminal Minds then. Never been much of a fan of her work I'm afraid. Bugger :(

:o :p
Well, I`m excited by the news. :snooty:
I wonder if they`ll need to replace Shemar Moore soon - he seems to be in the news lately for some alleged shennanigans.

In discussing Mandy's departure in a thread on "The Drama Boards", someone posted an article which pointed out Patinkin's self-imposed exile from CHICAGO HOPE many years ago (albeit, a temporary one). The article's author thinks that Mandy, a devoted stage actor, doesn't like being tied down to the weekly series grind.
Another article contains some pointed words from an CBS exec trying to divert the blame. That person also emphasized the expensive inconvenience caused by Mandy's unilateral, last-minute decision.
I don't think CM contained Mandy's best work. And he was hardly the "star". It was an emsemble piece. So I doubt that he will be missed much by those who aren't ardent fans of his.
The crucial thing will be the person replacing him. Will the actor and the role fit in neatly?
I'm not a Geena Davis fan either, but if I make a prediction now on her succcess, the actual result will be just the opposite. :ermm:

I can`t really see why Geena Davis would take the role - I don`t really see her as an ensemble actress.

unless she want to copy glenn close (the shield season four) and want only to appear for one season

Oh now I'm seriously hacked off.
Just read on Digital Spy...
Criminal Minds has had its last outing on Five. The crime procedural will now air exclusively on Living.

so why is C5 repeating season one? <_<

I see after negotiations with Harvey Keitel fell through, producers have opted for Joe Mantegna to take over from Patinken. Not the most exciting of choices.
But I guess if you don't have Living, then you ain't gonna see it!
Crichton Kicks - September 2, 2007 12:11 AM (GMT)
Keitel would have been fantastic, but Mantegna should be alright. Very good in Joan of Arcadia.

I like Joe but this will take a little getting used to.
CBS series Criminal Minds has announced stage, film and TV veteran Joe Mantegna will replace stage, film, and TV veteran Mandy Patinkin as the head investigator. On the show blog, according to TVTattle, the series creatoer Ed Bernero announced the news.
Mantegna this summer appeared in The Starter Wife on USA Network, and did a guest voice spot as Fat Tony in The Simpsons Movie. He had a starring role in the CBS series Joan of Arcadia several seasons back, playing Joan's dad, a cop. He has also starred in numerous plays by Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet and in films like Mamet's Homicide, Searching for Bobby Fischer, Bugsy, and The Godfather III.
Criminal Mind follows the cases of an FBI Behavioral Unit that catches serial killers, usually trying to stop the killer before the next victim is murdered. Patinkin left the series for personal reasons according to the show.
Criminal Minds enters its 3rd season this year.

I see this was already discussed down below. looks like a few older threads still need to get moved to their new homes.

You're too fast!
I like Mantegna, he was superb in JOA, but you're right, he'll take some getting used to. I thought Patinkin was fantastic in Criminal Minds so he's got some pretty hefty boots to fill.

I thought Mandy was superb as well and wasn't sure who could fill his boots either but I'm quite looking forward to seeing what Joe brings to the role. I loved him in JOA but he didn't really have a crucial part  so it'll be interesting to see how he does with this and how he interacts with the other characters :ponder:
