The sixth season of Smallville may have concluded less than a month ago, but hype is already building for the show's seventh.

The drama portrays a young Clark Kent (Tom Welling) before he truly becomes the crime-fighting Superman, and has brought in several characters from Superman lore. The upcoming season will continue that trend, according to Smallville executive producer Al Gough, with the introduction of another member of the Krypton clan.

Making her debut in the series next season will be Kara Zor-El--better known as Supergirl--Gough told TVGuide.com. Kara is Clark's cousin and will not only possess many of the same powers as Clark, but a few more as well.

"She has all of Clark's powers and a couple he doesn't have yet," Gough told TVGuide.com. "She can fly. And her response when Clark asks why is 'obviously girls mature faster than boys.'"

In the story, Kara's ship landed on Earth around the same time as Clark's, but "there was a problem and she's been in suspended animation for the last 16 years." A teenager when she escaped Krypton, she was initially meant to look after Clark. She awakes, still a teenager, for season seven because of one of the season-six finale's explosive plot points--the big dam break.

With Clark now older than she is, Kara is able to spend more time being a teenage Earthling girl. "She becomes enamored with our culture--clothes and iPods and stuff," says Gough. "We'll have a lot of fun as she gets acclimated."

The role of Supergirl in Smallville has not yet been cast.

Supergirl first appeared in comics in the late 1950s, two decades after Superman made his debut. Her backstory has undergone a series of changes since then, and she got her own film in 1984 and has appeared in the recent animated television series Justice League Unlimited and Superman.

Now, I could be wrong here, as the article above makes no mention of the fact, but hasn't Kara already appeared in Smallville? And didn't a lot of her development, again as outlined above, already happen/been explained?

A girl did appear calling herself "Kara", you're right. But, iirc, it was Jor-El using the body of a girl who was killed when the meteors hit Smallville :ponder:

^^ I can remember the episode in question, but I can't remember anything about how the end of the episode played out.

Good news though, Kara should be a decent character, and it's another young female added to the cast. They just need to balance it out now by offing Lana......

They should've killed Lana years ago, but they can't now - she's actually got something interesting to do at last

A quick check leads me to believe the episode in question was the season 3 finale, Covenant :)

Shame they can't get Sarah Carter to play her, she'd be perfect :naughty:

Sarah Carter?

A series regular on Shark isn't she? I knew there was a reason that show's worth checking out!

Re: Lana, they should have killed her in the 100th episode. I actually thought the episode worked better when she died rather than Jonathan. It would also have driven the permanent wedge between Clark and Lex, each thinking the other responsible in their own way.

Part of the dislike for Lana stems from a dislike of Kristin Kreuk. I just find her incredibly irritating.

You're not alone in that sentiment

Have you seen the end of season 6 yet? :ponder:

I'm not up on all the happenings in the comics, but I liked the way the 100th episode was handled. It made a lot of sense and was in keeping with the history of the character. And they had to keep Lana around to get involved with Lex, didn't they? :ponder:

Not even Sarah Carter's presence could make me watch Shark again

^^ I'm a little rusty on my Superman comic-lore, but I'm fairly sure Lana never ended up with Lex in the comics. If memory serves, I seem to recall she ultimately ended up marrying Pete Ross.

I thought the 100th episode was fantastic, but I must admit to a small groan when they bought Lana back from the dead. Vic was even more gutted as I'd told her that Lana really died. She was furious. She can't stand Lana either!

Yes, completely up to date with Smallville, although I need to rewatch the finale again at some point. I missed certain bits. I was very tired at the time and ended up dozing a couple of times.

I didn't watch Shark for ages. Not a massive fan of James Woods, but eventually got around to it. Didn't find it to be that bad. Nowhere near as good as House, the most obvious comparison, but watchable. IMO :)

Hmmm.

Methinks I smell Jeph Loeb's hand in this announcement. He recently (well a couple of years ago now) re-introduced Kara to the comics (the character has had about 6 different re-inventions/deaths/dimension shifts  )

Still think that my favourite was Peter David's interpretation of the Supergirl character. An alien shapeshifter, inspired by Superman to do good, then getting possessed by an avenging angel, and then it all got complicated

As for Lana in the comics? She's actually pretty good in the comics, married to Pete (people with long memories may remember him from the show  ) with a little child by the name of Clark. (There's been no implication yet that Pete isn't the father.

Oh yeah, Pete became vice president when Lex won the presidency, then Lex got ousted for his evil shenanigans, Pete took over as President, got possessed by an evil spirit, killed people and is currently awaiting trial.

So all's going well in the comics

Ah right. Lex and Lana were together (in at least one episode I remember) in the animated series, so I guess Smallville is drawing on all the different media :)

Gotta agree with that. The Peter David/Linda Danvers version is my favourite as well.

I remember buying that version religiously when it was being released, but had to give it up as an expendable expense when I left home. Never did see how it actually finished, but I recently downloaded the entire series, so I'll be checking that out very soon

You're in for a treat/confusion/consternation.

Sadly it didn't end cleanly. The series was cancelled due to "poor sales" which is a crock of **it. It was outselling many of DC's other books that are still going today, hell it outsold half of their "Vertigo" output

The real reasons for cancellation are still subject to much avid and often bloodcurdling speculation.

Crichton Kicks - June 12, 2007 11:28 AM (GMT)
Nice (or not) to see that the comic labels are as reliable as TV networks

Been downloading loads of comics recently. Lost a lot of them at the weekend though when the PC went screwy and I had to do a system restore. I'm currently re-doing the JMS run on Amazing Spider-man, and I lost everything past Collection 9 of the X-Men Chronology  I can't remember whether or not that will mean that I've lost the Onslaught storyline. If it does, I'll be pissed off.

Ooooh, I love the Onslaught storyline, especially the reveal as to who/what Onslaught actually is

If you don't know, you'll never see it coming.

Unfortunately (or fortunately!), I already know. Got spoiled on that one a very, very long time ago

I hate it when that happens <_<

Ah well, it's still a good story, if only the year afterwards hadn't happened
