SCI FI Channel announced that it has renewed its Peabody-winning original series Battlestar Galactica, ordering 13 new episodes. Production will resume this summer in Vancouver, Canada, with an eye toward a January 2008 premiere.
The decision comes after the series' successful move to a new 10 p.m. timeslot on Sundays. Since moving, Battlestar Galactica's audience has grown over its third-season average by 8 percent in total viewers, by double digits in female viewers, by 19 percent in the show's target demographic of adults aged 18-49 and by 14 percent in adults 25-54. The Jan. 28 episode, "Taking a Break From All Your Worries," delivered 2.5 million total viewers and 1.6 million adults 18-49, the largest audience for any episode since the season-two premiere.
"We're thrilled to bring Battlestar back for another season," Mark Stern, SCI FI's executive vice president of programming, said in a statement. "This series has delivered on every level, from the writing to the acting to the production values. SCI FI is proud to be the home of the best show on television."
The series is from NBC Universal Television Studio and is executive-produced by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick. Its cast is led by Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff, Jamie Bamber, James Callis, Tricia Helfer and Grace Park. Battlestar recently returned with the second half of its third original season, immediately following SCI FI's newest original series, The Dresden Files.

From one side the 13 episodes makes a lot more sense - with Season 1 there was only one really disappointing episode (the insipid 'Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me down'), however with the longer Seasons 2 and 3 there have been a lot more disappointing episodes (the likes of 'Black Market' and similar episodes around that time in Season 2, and ones like 'A Matter of Salvation' and 'Unfinished Business' in Season 3.
Also, from what I gather the ratings for Season 3 haven't been great, and I can understand Sci-Fi not wanting to commit to a full 20 episode season as well.
However, at the same time, this 13 episode order is a minimum, and could well be upped to a full 20 (or even 22)-episode run :)

Battlestar Galactica will air its season-three finale on March 25 in its regular Sunday 10 p.m. ET/PT timeslot. Production will begin on the new season in May, with an eye to an early 2008 premiere.

Don't get over optimistic - from what I've heard this will be it for Galactica. Apparently there were two options - 2 seasons of 13 episodes, or one extended season of 22 episodes. After that - finito.
At least they have time to plan a proper ending....

^^ The numbers have slipped this year, it's a shame that they rarely look past that. Production-wise, Galactica's far superior to the likes of Eureka or The Dresden Files, which will undoubtedly go on to last for 10 years. They're not bad shows but it's like comparing The Sun with The Times.

I'm sure no-one is going to agree with my opinion but while production wise Battlestar Galactica is still fantastic (great CGI, very good acting and high production values). I have found the stories very lacking and while the show looks exactly as it did back in the beginning, in my humble opinion the show is only a shadow of what it started out as.

I am currently about halfway through S2 and absolutely loving it. It is a bit of a shame if S3 loses its way a bit from the post above. Nevertheless the current standard is astounding.
It is easily the best thing I have seen since Buffy finished though clearly the shows are coming from different perspectives. It is probably unfair to compare fantasy to science fiction.
I remember watching the original BSG in about 78/79. I love how the writers have injected a massive amount of 'logicality' into the script ie having all the ships have FTL drives rather than the absurd originals sub-light 'crawl'.
Does anyone else remember going to see the 'films' BSG and BSG 2? I used 'scare quotes' as they massively cheated us by splicing the pilot and the Pegasus episodes together to create a 'film'. sk

^^ For what it's worth, I actually preferred Season 3 to Season 2. The latter half of season 2 just meandered along without giving the impression of direction.
