| Former Stargate SG-1 star Ben Browder told SCI FI Wire that Stargate: Continuum, the second of two straight-to-DVD spinoff movies, will be accessible to the casual fan. That differs from the first film, Stargate: The Ark of Truth, which wraps up the Ori storyline of SG-1 and ties up the series' various bits of mythology. "I think Ark of Truth is more tied to the last couple years of the series," Browder said in an interview. "Continuum is more stand-alone. That's probably the most concise way of saying it." Few details have been released about Continuum, though cast and crew are known to have flown to the arctic for some location shooting. By contrast, Ark of Truth deals with much of the SG-1 storylines, and writer/director Robert C. Cooper wanted to satisfy the fans, Browder said. "They were thinking of the fans when they did Ark of Truth, it's so dense with the mythology of the show, and it's wrapping up storylines," Browder said. "The producers of Stargate are very appreciative of their audience, and they're aware of the audience. And Cooper's been with the show from the very beginning. He probably ... knows the audience quite well." Can a newcomer drop into Stargate late? "Look, you can drop into the third season of something without knowing all the backstory and go, 'Wow, this is really interesting. I like this,'" Browder said. " And, yeah, look, Ark is riddled with Stargate mythology, and there's no question about that. I would imagine a reasonably intelligent, discerning audience member would be able to follow the story, though." If not, look for Continuum, which is expected to be released in July |

MGM confirmed a July 29 release date for the second of its upcoming Stargate SG-1 straight-to-DVD movies, Stargate: Continuum, which will also be released on Blu-ray disc. In the action-adventure movie based on the long-running SCI FI Channel series, members of SG-1 find themselves returning to a world where their history has been dramatically altered. Continuum brings back original SG-1 star Richard Dean Anderson as Jack O'Neill, along with series regulars Ben Browder, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, Claudia Black, Beau Bridges and Michael Shanks. Continuum was filmed partly in the Arctic and is the most ambitious Stargate production yet. The disc will also feature commentary from producer/writer Brad Wright and director Martin Wood, as well as three making-of featurettes that explore how the U.S. military provided the production with a Navy nuclear submarine and F-15 fighter jets, what it was like shooting in the Arctic and how science and science fiction collide. Stargate: Continuum will carry a suggested retail price of $26.98 (DVD) and $39.98 (Blu-ray). |

| Continuum Expands SG-1 Brad Wright, writer and executive producer of Stargate: Continuum, told SCI FI Wire that making a Stargate feature film is very different from making series episodes. "We've done so many two-parters, you'd think it would be easy to just make it longer," said Wright, who spoke to SCI FI Wire following a press screening of the direct-to-DVD film in Vancouver, B.C., on May 14. But a feature, Wright explained, has a very different structure. "It's much more fun in some ways to do a movie, because the story can evolve the way it's supposed to. It doesn't have to owe anything to the episode before or the episode after. That was the fun part, to actually write a movie and not just a long episode." Wright took that opportunity to have some fun and ran with it. Stargate: Continuum features the return of beloved series actors such as Richard Dean Anderson and Don S. Davis, as well as fan-favorite villain Ba'al, played by Cliff Simon. Fans of Claudia Black's Vala will see a whole new side of her character as well. But perhaps the biggest difference is the chance to take a deeper look into the personalities of the main characters, made possible by the more luxurious running time. Even amid all the action, one of the film's highlights is a sequence in which Mitchell (Ben Browder), Carter (Amanda Tapping) and Jackson (Michael Shanks) return to an Earth where the entire Stargate project never happened. In this timeline, Jackson's still a lone crank writing about pyramids, Carter was an astronaut who died in a shuttle accident and Mitchell never existed at all. The current government doesn't want to hear about restoring the timeline, as they're quite happy with the one they've got. And so the remaining members of SG-1 are retired and must struggle to adjust to new lives in a world that isn't their own. The film includes a scene in which Carter goes shopping and Mitchell returns to a farm he visited as a boy. Wright said he couldn't have gotten away with such character drama in an SG-1 episode. "[There] are things that I could type in an episode of television, but would be the first things to go once I got in the concept meeting because I just wouldn't have the schedule for it," he said. "That's time-eating material. You have to move a whole unit to a location and shoot what is ultimately three seconds or five seconds of film." With more time and more resources to work with, Wright and the producers and cast of Stargate: Continuum have taken their world and characters in new directions. They've also pushed the envelope for what the Stargate franchise can do as MGM considers whether to do more movies or create a third series. Stargate: Continuum launches on DVD and Blu-Ray on July 29. |

| Amanda Tapping may be executive-producing and starring in SCI FI Channel's upcoming original series Sanctuary, but that doesn't means she's completely left behind her previous role--Col. Samantha Carter on Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. Tapping will also reprise the role of Carter in an upcoming straight-do-DVD Atlantis movie, she said. "I know nothing about it," Tapping said. "I can honestly tell you that. I was asked if I could make myself available, and I said of, 'Of course I would.' Stargate is home. I may be off at university right now getting my Ph.D. in craziness, but I will always go home for Thanksgiving dinner at Stargate." The third DVD Stargate film is looking at production next year, Tapping added. "Rumor has it late spring/early summer of next year, but I honestly couldn't tell you beyond that," she said. "I know Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis will be shooting movies at that time. And [Stargate] Universe, I believe, starts up in January." Will Tapping appear in Universe, the upcoming third Stargate TV series? "No," she said emphatically. "I think if I were, people would go, 'Enough with the Carter!'" |
