Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood will return for a second series in 2007, the BBC has confirmed.
The news comes as the show - from Who guru Russell T Davies - reaches the end of its first run on BBC Three, where it has drawn a peak of 2.4 million viewers and an average audience of around 1 million. It has also garnered regular ratings of over 2 million for BBC Two on Thursday nights.
The BBC also confirmed that the second series will premiere on BBC Two, ending speculation over which channel would get to screen the show first. As with the main Doctor Who series, it is still expected to have a repeat window on BBC Three.
Describing Torchwood as "inventive, intelligent and unpredictable", BBC Two controller Roly Keating said he was "delighted" to have secured first run broadcast of the series. Meanwhile, BBC Three head Julian Bellamy said he was "proud" that the channel had helped to "build Torchwood into one of the most talked-about and eagerly-anticipated series of recent years".
Russell T Davies, who will continue to executive produce with Julie Gardner, added: "The whole team is bristling with ideas and we are delighted that Cardiff is going to be home to more monsters and mayhem."
Filming of the second series will begin in the Spring for transmission towards the end of 2007. |

I'd be much happier to hear that a forth season of Doctor Who has been comissioned and that David Tennant would be sticking around but I'll settle with this so far.
The ratings have been good, and overall the reviews have been OK, so why not a second series, it definately won't last as long as Doctor Who, but it'll be around for awhile.
Still I think out of any women who have starred in Doctor Who, I would have chosen Eve Myles as my new Tardis companion, ahead of Freema Agyeman, but I think she will be good as well. Still when Torchwood finishes maybe Eve Myles can transfer over to the Tardis???
Phillip Culley - December 12, 2006 07:48 PM (GMT)
I just hope they use the opportunity to pull their finger out and make sure Series 2 has gotten rid of all the crap elements of Series 1....

LOL at the first two. As for unpredictable, I suppose it is, varying from the not bad to bloody awful  Tbh, I find that whole press release a little embarrassing. If the BBC think that that's good drama...
Ideally I'd love to see it have a complete overhaul, starting with firing Chris Chibnall(?). I was looking forward to it so much and it does have so much potential, I just hope that RTD & co aren't so blinkered that they can't see where there's room for (vast) improvement.
prophecy girl - December 12, 2006 08:39 PM (GMT)
:ermm: there is a few change to make that
serie a lot better:
maybe they will be telling less about gwen love life  and more about cardiff aliens underground. i know torchwood is supposed to be protecting earth (or just cardiff and well the countryside) from aliens and i suppose they can't be visiting other worlds unless one of the character is kidnapped :ponder:  but it could be  .
more about jack past would be great.
and maybe meet one of the other torchwood staff (and what about the missing one ... mentionned in the first episode)
so the "something is moving in the dark and it's coming after you, jack" seem a lot less worrying (unless that's just mean torchwood gonna lost an other character  )

Eve Myles was excellent in the episode the Unquiet Undead, and she wouldn't necessarily have to be Gwen Cooper, but I think she would have acting ability to be the Doctors Companion.
I think the jury is still out on this one, the recent episode 'The Keep KIlling Suzie' was just sublime in my opinion yet this weeks was very poor. I think they do need to hit their stride, but in terms of setting out to be a 'Doctor Who for adults' its done quite well in my books.
Of course its going to have strange corny moments and plot holes just like Doctor Who. In my books it has been a semi-success, especially in viewership, and does deserve a second series, which may yield better episodes.

Marsters May Return For More ‘Torchwood’
This
article contains MINOR SPOILERS for the second season of "Torchwood."
prophecy girl - November 22, 2007 11:00 AM (GMT)
The premiere episode of Torchwood season 2 guest starring James Marsters will air on BBC America January 26 2008.
usually new season of doctor Who or Torchwood are shown in the US after they were show in the UK :o so is it because of james marsters or because of the writers strike? :ponder:  (because apart repeat of season one on BBC3, no much info about the start of the new season) :ermm:
goth willow fan - November 22, 2007 11:11 AM (GMT)
What possible effect could the writers strike have on BBC America?
As for James Marsters I expect most people would think "who's he?"
I reckon Torchwood will inherit Heroes' Wednesday BBC2 spot in a few weeks time.

Neither - the BBC said it will start in the new year, so I should expect it at the beginning of January.
Remember, the BBC only confirmed the actual broadcast dates of Series 3 on March 20th - 11 days before it broadcast, and Series 2 was confirmed on March 31st - 15 days before broadcast. With 6 weeks to go before this year even ends, we've got ages to wait.

James Marsters has revealed that he's signed on to appear in future episodes of Torchwood.

Pre-watershed 'Torchwood' planned for kids Monday, December 3 2007, 15:01 GMT
By Neil Wilkes, Editor
The new series of Torchwood will be repeated in a pre-watershed slot on BBC Two, it was revealed today.
The Doctor Who spinoff, known for its more violent and racy scenes, is transferring from BBC Three to a primetime slot on its terrestrial sibling when it returns for the new run in mid-January.
Speaking at a Torchwood press launch this morning, BBC Two controller Roly Keating said the move to introduce an edited version of the show for pre-watershed broadcast was in response to "popular demand from families and younger viewers".
Referring to the show's gay relationships, executive producer Russell T Davies added: "And no, the kissing won't be removed."
Torchwood is also being lined up as "a pillar" of the new BBC HD channel |

I think saying its a version for 'Kids' is probably a bit mis-leading it won't be on between the TellyTubbies and Shaun the Sheep on CBBC ( I hope :o ) it will probably just be on between 7:00pm - 9:00pm with the swearing and most gory bits cut out.

Seems to be a big Torchwood news day as they gear up to start promoting S2.
The beeb have released
a very spoilery press release (that obviously hasn't been proof read ) complete with new cast photo (which looks a bit odd to me :ermm:).
SFX have also seen 2x01 and have given their verdict. It's pretty spoiler free imo, there aren't plot points there just some casting spoilers which I think everyone knows by now. They seem pretty positive about it
And the
BBC Torchwood site looks like it's going to be S2ified starting tomorrow.

Yes, I have a problem with this very much so. We pay our license fee to fund the BBC and therefore Torchwood, and then BBC America gets to show it to the American audience two weeks after it airs on BBC2.
Whereas we could be waiting up to 6 months for any of the shows that air in America first. I'm hoping BBC America are paying our BBC premium for this.

Are you going to whine about Canada getting Series 1 a little over a week after the UK back in 2005 as well? Or how about The Christmas Invasion being shown the day after the UK?
People have to pay for BBC America as well you know, so they're effectively paying their 'license fee' for it.
If trailers for Torchwood are being shown in the US before the UK, then it's the BBC's fault for not getting off their arse and showing them first.
little pixie - December 20, 2007 02:39 PM (GMT)

I wouldn't have a problem with it if the license fee didn't keep going up. It seems as though more and more money is being made from selling shows to the United States, and then we have the money made from DVD sales etc.
Really more of the profit made off of this should be going back into funding the BBC. Somehow I just don't think it does. Thats the problem I have with it.
I have no problem if it seems as though a fair deal has been set, but to air something before the BBC has aired it (Extras Christmas Special) or a day after it airs on the BBC, they should be paying a fair amount. But I highly doubt they do.

The US doesn't get the show before us, they just got the trailer. iirc they start showing S2 ten days after we start.
There is an extended version of the trailer that aired after
Voyage of the Damned at the beeb site
