A cartoon biography of troubled pop star Pete Doherty is to be made into an animated TV series.
A Boy Called Pete, by Peter Robinson, charts the rise to fame of the lead singer of Babyshambles and his struggle with drug addiction.

"I don't think anyone could read about the life of Pete Doherty and think doing drugs is a good thing," Robinson told the BBC.

He would not reveal who the TV deal was with or when it would be aired.

A Boy Called Pete tells the story of a young man who "sings songs and wears hats" and whose love of "mind-bending drugs" means he and pal Kate are "always in trouble".

The singer's real-life girlfriend is model Kate Moss.

The TV deal also includes Robinson's other pop biographies on Britney Spears, Madonna, Robbie Williams, Eminem, Michael Jackson, Sir Elton John and Take That.

"Robbie was given a copy of his book, he thinks it's funny... but there's been no comment from Pete yet," Robinson said.

The author, who is also the founder of the music gossip website Popjustice, said three new titles will be released in spring including one about Kylie Minogue and one on John Lennon.

The Minogue biography was due to be published earlier but was put back after she announced she had cancer last year.

A Boy Called Pete, which was published at the beginning of November, is selling steadily in the run-up to Christmas. About 1000 copies have been sold so far.

Robinson said he wanted to write the books as they "work like a fairytale".

He said adults could read them but most of them were also suitable for children.
