Title: 1.18 A Bug's Life
willowroolz - July 13, 2004 08:28 PM (GMT)
A highly trained team of Special Peacekeeper Commandos board Moya, believing her still to be under Peacekeeper command. The crew quickly discover that their visitors are on a top priority mission to a secret base in the vicinity...

Can I just say a quick welcome to the newest member of the Farscape crew, John's leather pants :D

What did you expect? I'm only human after all :D

Okay. I know this episode is basically just The Thing but I like it (I know, I like just about every episode :P ).
John's accent is a little bizarre though, is it supposed to be English?
Not much Aeryn and John in this one, she seems to be more interested in Larrraq than John here. But we do get that sweet scene where she wakes up to find that he had been sitting by her bedside, watching over her. Then she goes and spoils it <_<
Great ghostbusters quote by John (actually an ad lib by Ben Browder!!) and the introduction of Chi's nickname, Pip :D

Yeah, this is pretty much Farscape's version of The Thing, but it works pretty well. A good story, after all, is still a good story so long as it's told well (and what with watching this and The X Files "Ice" in the past few days, I've seen it told well twice! ).
The aspect of Farscape that I love, especially when it's telling a well known story, is the way it throws something extra into the mix. And there's a lot going on here. Firstly there's the arrival of the PK Commandos, which in fairness would have made a good story on its own even without their captive. Add to this the fact that John and Aeryn pose as PKs whilst the rest of the crew revert to their prisoner status (with the exception of Pip, but more of that in a mo) and it adds an extra level of tension. How long can they keep this ruse going? What if one of the commandos decides to kill one of them (which could have been D'Argo after his "attack" on John)? What if they find out the truth and recapture the crew and Moya? On Farscape any one of these things is possible, and sometimes more.
And then there are the two loose cannons on board Moya: Rygel and Chiana. Rygel refuses to stay in his cell, which is risking everything in itself, and both he and Chi are so devious and, to put it mildly, greedy that they are both determined to find out exactly what it is that the Commandos are carrying. Pip's method of finding out shows just one of the reasons why she will become such a valued member of the crew. On this occasion, however, she is serving no-one but herself - and, as it turns out, Rygel. It is their devious and greedy natures that unlock the main thrust of the story, and the unleashed virus leads to some wonderfully tense scenes, particularly the one in Command, as the crew and the Commandos face off against each other. It's like a 9 or 10-way Mexican stand-off. Great stuff.
Nearly as great as the way that Crichton finally despatches the virus, the Marauder and Larraq. It's one of those brilliant Farscape moments where the ingenuity of the characters surpasses the need for weapons.
The final scenes are beautifully realised, too, with D'Argo's desire to destroy his chains being deeply symbolic. And the one between Aeryn and John is spot on - is that a tear rolling down your cheek, Aeryn?
Where A Human Reaction set the ball in motion, this episode gives it a push towards the crest of the hill. Both episodes have quietly and efficiently set major events in motion. If you got the impression, as he stood in the doorway at the end of A Human Reaction, that Crichton's life would never be the same, you'd be spot on.
Life on Moya is about to get very interesting.

Not the most original plotline, but hey, you could say that about practically every episode of Firefly. Not a bad thing, taking an age old plot, and putting your own twist to it. :D
I really liked this episode. It just goes to show, how the mutual respect of the crew, had given D'Argo and Zhaan enough confidence to allow themselves to be locked up, again.
I adored Crichton's entrance, the camera slowly pans up, class, wow, he's a cute guy  I think he really he pulled it off too.
I'm thinking Peacekeepers, not the sharpest knives in the box, wouldn't there have been some kind of beacon alert, if the 3 fugitives had been recaptured
Back to the plot, okay, kicking along, you just know somethings up, with the cargo, he's just too damned protective, but wary at the same time. At first I thought Chianna was playing them for the benefit of the rest of the crew, but she's a devious little minx, and Rygel, little scamp. You'd have thought Rygel would have learnt his lesson by now. It never goes well, if he has a hidden agenda.
I thought the way the Moya inhabitants dropped the pretence, was handled very well. It didn't turn into a big thing, off topic
It wasn't quite what I expected, esp after watching Firefly, I was expecting a prisoner. Genius with the virus. I loved the way it developed from this point, the virus jumping from person to person. I don't know whether I should have thought this, but I was certain it was in Zhaan, there was just something about the way she was behaving. Crichton's enie, menie, mo, LOL
I loved the standoff with the guns, I'm curious about one thing though, did all the peacekeepers die, I must have missed what happened, to the last male lieutenant
Overall a really good episode, and you say it gets better

I always thought it was in Zhaan, too :)

So did I! :)
Because I thought to that zhaan was the carrier of the virus I was thinking how can you trust what she's giving everyone? She could have just done something to affect one of the others. Anyway it wasn't in her.
For me this episode had great meaning because on my first viewing this was the first time that I saw Crichton in a brand new light. Before I always saw him as a geek and a scientist but to me this is when he stepped up and took control. This is where i became a fan.
I liked how the others trusted him enough to follow his plan which has been said was very very risky.
One thing that did trouble me about this episode was the fact that Moya let the ship aboard with the caesium leak, knowing how protective she is of her unborn baby it didnt sit right with me. Although it tied the story up nicely at the end with the starburst!
I didn't think aeryn Sun was into Larraq but was more seduced by the appeal of being a peacekeeper commando. Anyway she played her part well to the point where Larraq didn't want her to go... But who would? :D
And what can I say about Chianna except she was great, using her skills to get an imprint of the key, then going off to steal what was in the box leading to the virus' release...oops :whistling:
willowroolz - November 29, 2004 04:51 PM (GMT)
Good points, all of them
And I think this episode sits very well with those around it in terms of the push towards the big climax. In fact, the events in it are integral to what follows. :)
laughitupfuzzball - November 29, 2004 06:18 PM (GMT)
 Great episode on its own and for the episodes it sets up.
I won't post too much, just things that stand out.
Love Crichton playing Peacekeeper, he sounds quite creepy. (and looks great)
I like the way we get to see the fear and hate from D'Argo at having to relive his captive days. Its really well done and in interesting theme to explore.
They don't have an easy life do they, first peacekeepers on board and then the virus and then Aeryn :o
Spot on although it was more a wistful dream I think.
Great ending, shoot off and then Aeryn getting stabbed. Loved Rygel and Chiana letting their greed get the better of them a great pairing.

Loved this episode. The Peacekeepers have been absent for a while (in my viewings anyway !!). Nice to see that the crew's opinion of and trust in Crichton has now elevated to the position where they're willing to try his bold plan. Crichton as a Peacekeeper is quite convincing and superbly played out by BB.
The story itself, as well as setting up certain things for the next few episodes also acts as a standalone, mirroring, as others have said the classic movie The Thing. That's no bad comparison, this version's as well done as The XF's own version Ice was done before it.
The ending was a little signposted if you thought about it logicially, but it was still a very enjoyable episode for a number of reasons.

I know it's already been said but that accent was just terrible. :(
Apart from that, pretty good. :)

saw this ep last night and thought, what a great episode, the way chricton was given command so-to-say was excellent, it shows they're finally giving him the respect and trust he deserves.
i also like the way chiana is getting bigger parts in the show now, because as soon as she came all went quiet with her, you'd see her for only a few seconds and that was all.

 Chi is superb of course, love her pairing with Rygel, they make a great if argumentative team.
BtB about that accent, obvious of me but I did like it
