Title: Who Are You?
Description: Episode 72 (2 of 2)
laughitupfuzzball - November 5, 2006 05:22 PM (GMT)
After Faith activates the device left for her by the Mayor, it becomes apparent that she and Buffy have switched bodies. Now Buffy, in Faith’s body, must escape from the Watcher’s Council and convince someone of what has happened. Meanwhile, Faith, as Buffy, has full access to Buffy’s life, her friends, and her boyfriend.

An excellent episode that give to two fantastic actress something really difficult to do: act like her counter part. That give to SMG some serious scene stealing (“buffy”/spike at the bronze and “buffy” “it’s wrong” mirror training being some of them, “buffy” having fun wrecking havoc and then ending up learning a thing or two about love, slaying, ….. (Something she will digest and deal with in the angel crossovers).
The scene where faith saved buffy (consequence same scene), faith breaking down after having gone through so much in one day and then punching herself (wow). The church fight is really well done.
The worse being the useless watcher special team (ok they are good at kidnapping “faith” from a police car, made sure of everything was in place to refuse blackmail, ….) but pushing “faith” at taking measure to escape (the spitting was over the top).
After last week, willow/Tara nice scene (“I am you know” “what?” “your”), we have a few great scenes between the two actresses: Tara hurt when “buffy” make fun of her and mentioning oz, willow secrecy, hesitancy and then her trusting Tara without second thought to make a spell to find out what’s going on with buffy (a double entendre: the spell scene that is)
“faith”/Giles scene is quite good too, the return of Adam (not too annoying as short … at least we learn what adam or is that walsh big plan was ……… or is that due to a bug in the computer part of adam’s brain? ),
Riley losing a lot of point in the end of the episode: still not believing in magic, failing to hide that he slept with faith (ok in buffy body but still) and failing to tell it without hurting buffy feeling.

Who Are You? is Buffy firing on all cylinders though they are fairly serious ones. I liked the idea that this could have been called Faith Off.
Sarah has the better deal it seems to me as she can indulge Faith's animalistic predilections while Eliza has to be the wholesome Buffy.
Fuffy's finest moments are probably the amazingly simpering yet seductive moves she makes on Spike along with her Alan-Partridge-lack-of-sensitivity verbal demolition of Tara. I love how Amber plays it by dropping her head in shame.
Baith does not quite have as much to work with though she could give James Bond a run for his money especially the escape in the van.
Technically then this is Fuffy's episode as the development of the 'it's wrong' line clearly moves from being ironic to sincere when Fuffy finally arrives at the church.
I wonder how far to take the idea of the social construction of the self in Who Are You? as the catalyst for Fuffy clearly developing a moral conscience are Buffy's relationships and social expectations so in a way the distinction between Buffy and Faith has become blurred. I suppose the corollary of that would be Baith encounters certain social expectations as well where force is the only answer until she can try and reason with Giles. 8/10. sk

Spike: You know why I really hate you, Summers?
Buffy: 'Cause I'm a stuck-up tight-ass with no sense of fun?
Spike: Well, yeah, that covers a lot of it.
Buffy: Cause I could do anything I want, and instead, I choose to pout and whine and feel the burden of slayerness? I mean, I could be rich, I could be famous, I could have anything. Anyone. [Buffy moves closer and puts her hands on Spike's chest.] Even you, Spike. I could ride you at a gallop until your legs buckled and your eyes rolled up. I've got muscles you've never even dreamed of. I could squeeze you until you popped like warm champagne, and you'd beg me to hurt you just a little bit more. And you know why I don't? [She moves closer and looks up at him pursing her lips.] Because it's wrong. Humh humh. [She moves off.]

Just reading that dialogue is something else but Sarah's amazingly simpering yet seductive delivery renders it mind blowing. sk

This year's girl was great then this something else! Sarah was incredible as Faith and proves once again good at being bad I wish we had the chance to see a little more of this put simply Sarah is seduction!
Eliza as Buffy I thought did really well but was a bit more difficult as she really one scene where she be acting as Buffy.
Perhaps not surprisingly Faith is the first to notice that Willow and Tara are falling in love although she was mean to Tara. Willow and Tara relationship a big theme we Tara feeling insecure as Willow still hasn’t introduced her to Buffy and co. Then moment that is and move all doubt couple But I kind of like having something that's just, you know, mine………Tara: I am, you know. Willow: What? Tara: Yours.
The reason a mention but was iirc Joss it seem to take ages for some fans to realise what going I just can’t remember if was this episode he was talking about?
Faith’s journey was the most interesting part of the episode she goes from criminal to Slayer. Here’s what I mean First she slays a vampire at the Bronze (to protect her cover) then is surprised when the girl thanks her for saving her. She had forgotten what that felt like. Then when she goes to Riley partly because in her own words she has a tendency to give in to her animal instincts. Of course got I’m sure she got a kick out of sleeping with Buffy’s boyfriend and him being non the wiser. Then when Faith wakes up in a panic Riley comforts her something with I’m assuming has never happened before as most guys have just used her. Then when she is leaving town see the news and Adam vampires in the church she (not know what has happened to Buffy) she goes back save them. Being Buffy has allowed Faith to be the Slayer she wanted to be. Here’s my question if the Council had killed Buffy would Faith have skipped town or stay and be the Slayer full time?
When Faith is confront with Buffy and her own face attacking she that she You're disgusting we just unhappy she is. I do feel so sorry for Faith in the final shot alone again.

depend what would have been the scoobies reaction? but i doubt they would have trusted faith (even in buffy's body), tara and willow found out what was going on so they would have known. so i guess she would have still left town

Would Fuffy have been trapped in Buffy's body or would the story metaphysics allow Buffy to be somehow pulled back from the ether? The end of WAY seems to imply that physical contact is needed with the other so the mojo can do its stuff. From that I guess that Fuffy would have been trapped as such. sk
prophecy girl - March 12, 2007 04:08 PM (GMT)
i suppose if faith body die, whoever is using it (person energy or personality) die too so even if the scoobies had brought "buffy" to the coroner, the exchange would not have been possible (but then anything can happen in joss verse   )

The bizarre story metaphysics here gives me a headache.
I suppose with a show that can have such a bizarre plot device as Angel's soul or the whole of Bargaining then indeed anything would have been possible. sk
buffy_fan1 - March 12, 2007 11:02 PM (GMT)
If it hadn't been for Tara I wonder long it would have taken the scobbies to catch on to Fuffy (great name JB  ) Even Joyce didn't realise it wasn't her daughter she talking to.
prophecy girl - March 13, 2007 09:53 AM (GMT)
there is also the problem of the council special ops, "faith" told her she is not faith but they don't give a damn who is inside because buffy also mess up with what they believe in. so they are ready to kill the "good" slayer and let the "rogue" one on the run. what kind of logic is that? (maybe the council would have sent them after "buffy" after investigating or after a visit of "ripper" ............... now i wouldn't want to be quentin in that case)
buffy_fan1 - March 13, 2007 05:09 PM (GMT)
The Council don't like Buffy that much is clear but all they said in relation to her was she didn't work for them any more. I don't think they thought of her as an enemy. I don't think even they are that stupid after all she was still doing her job. Kendra was their ideal Slayer no family, no personal life and trained that was her life but she was dead in just few months. So as long was Buffy fighting evil would want to rock the boat. :ponder:
prophecy girl - March 13, 2007 07:09 PM (GMT)
they also say that giles doesn't work for the council anymore and yet who do they visit as soon they arrived: giles ................ was that a polite visit or just to tell him (and buffy) to stay out of the way (as if) )?
buffy_fan1 - March 14, 2007 06:03 PM (GMT)
Thats a very good point I can't think of a reason that makes sense other then Doug want them to make scene more dramatic i.e. them breaking Giles' flat rather then making an important plot point unless he want them seen tougher then they really are as we see later in the story. :ponder:

yeah but giles front door seemed to have a problem through season four: people entering without knocking, spike sneaking/running/walking in, ............ (even giles complaint about it in one episode, saying that he did lock the door "that time" but that didn't stop anyone to enter ......... i think it was spike)
giles did seem a little worry at the sight of the team but maybe it was because he didn't know why they were there ........... yet

And if Faith's body died (whoever currently in residence), a new Slayer would have been chosen :whistling:

"will he do faith spin off"?
"after season eight, will there be a season nine?" :lmao:
"who is the drawing guy who failed to make andrew looking like andrew in the comic?"
"next TV (other than buffy/angel/firefly) /film project?"
"is there a film he would have like to be part of (apart wonder woman, that is), past/present/known to be filmed?"

OK, when I said 'one' I obviously meant he's not going ANYWHERE till we've asked him everything we need to know...
But if you had to choose one of those? :fear:

And (because this is MY wish-universe), the wording has to be carefully thought out, e.g.:
Mr Whedon, were you as happy with the log-awaited Ripper film as your fans seem to be?
-would be a very nice question for the not-too distant future.
