Title: Ghost Machine
Description: 1x03

| Torchwood discovers a machine that allows them to view the ghosts that walk among us. Using it, prompts Owen to investigate an unsolved crime - one that could change all their futures. |
laughitupfuzzball - October 30, 2006 05:25 PM (GMT)
It reminded me of an old Sapphire and steel episode for some reason, maybe the train station at night with the ghosts.
I'm loving the chemistry between Gwen and Jack
prophecy girl - October 30, 2006 05:36 PM (GMT)
the gun training was quite good :shifty: (so does jack also unable to sleep? :ermm: :ponder: )
the plot was kinda ok but jack said it was ghost energy and yet gwen saw her future self (but alive and the kid in her first past flashback was too  ) .... did i miss something?
laughitupfuzzball - October 30, 2006 06:07 PM (GMT)
I think he meant ghost in the literal sense - like an echo of strong emotion as it were and not actually undead :)

That's what I took it to mean too ;)
Like you said earlier Alex, love the moments between Jack and Gwen. It seems he feels like he can open up to her more than the others at Torchwood. I wonder why?
prophecy girl - October 30, 2006 07:20 PM (GMT)
that kind explain it
i suppose gwen is still connected to the humanity (she has a life outside torchwood ................... but for how long?) :ponder:
Crichton Kicks - October 30, 2006 09:05 PM (GMT)
When Jack said that he never sleeps, I read that to be a literal sense of he never sleeps. Is it just me, or if you were Gwen, wouldn't your first question have been "why?"
Really enjoyed this one. Eerie in places, decent character progression throughout, and although IMO it's Barrowman again who comes off the best, there's some really good development for the Owen character as well.
Next week's episode looks interesting
jamiearmour - October 30, 2006 11:42 PM (GMT)
This was a brilliant ep. Spooky, emotional, gripping.
Like everyone else, I'm thoroughly enjoying the developing relationship between Jack and Gwen.
I'm feeling that (again) Ianto is being sidelined for some reason, hopefully he fulfills his potential as more than just "the receptionist".
The "ghosts" were brilliant, the investigations to find them were better

Owen is turning into a really great character, at first, I found him to be tolerable(barely) but this ep showed that he does have depth, and room for much develpment.
This show is looking even more promising.

Well yes but there had just been that rather intimate gun training session  so asking if he's lonely at night seemed a good line

That was exactly what I was going to say

The "intimate gun training sesssion" was pants. Thought the rest of the episode was a decent step up from the first two, though :)
Bad Wolf - October 31, 2006 08:35 AM (GMT)
I didn't like this episode one little bit. I'm not one for getting caught up in the drama (and I use the term loosely). Jack is trying his hardest but there is no way he alone can keep this going. Owen is dire, Gwen is.....Gwen, Toshiko....why is she even in it? After all she did run away screaming from the 'space pig'. Ianto hasn't done anything.....yet.
As for the chemistry between Gwen and Jack ....I must have blinked.
"(The Bumper Book of (yawn, yeah whatever) ‘Torchwood’ facts has this to say about Ghost Machine: to save money for the series’ excessive special effects budget, the actor playing Ianto Jones is paid by the word)." :D

I was just going to say the same thing - it was a space-filler which was completely unnecessary. Do we really need them to spell out the supposed chemistry between Jack and Gwen?
I thought on the whole the story was too lightweight and was padded to death to take it to 50 minutes.
I enjoyed some of it though ;)

If only people would take their blinkers off. See it for what it really is...a really bad (or S2) version of Doctor Who.

at least gwen is not acting blase by everything alien related :ermm:

ahhh see I thought Season 2 was much better than Season 1 Doctor Who :)
I think Torchwood has a great feel to it although I'm not sure if I'm keen on the little team dynamic, I would prefer it to be larger, I know they mentioned branches but it would nice to see something of them, maybe they just need a bigger threat.
I do like the den though.

The two shouldn't be compared IMO. I don't like DT for a start and the stories were so awful.....from start to finish.
As for Torchwood...it's bland, in a been there done that many times kind of way. I'd like something new rather than a rehash of a rehash. I understand that many people will love it, what I can't understand is why :)

I didn't like CE as Dr Who and DT completely turned it round for me :)
N.B. I do normally like CE just not in that role :)

CE was perfect as The Doctor. DT always looks like he's gurning even when trying to show the most basic emotion :)
DT wasn't much use when it came to saving Rose either. Ok I know BP wanted to leave but what a bad way to do it. He didn't even try. My Doctor gave his live to save her :p
Crichton Kicks - October 31, 2006 06:11 PM (GMT)
I know Tennant has his detractors, but he's better suited to the role than CE was. Half of the time (I'm being generous here, it was probably more) whenever he was onscreen he came across as the grinning simpleton depriving some village of its idiot.
The comparative merits of seasons one and two are fairly similar, that aside. They both had a few duff episodes, both had some great episodes, and both had some somewhere inbetween.
Re Torchwood, or more pointedly the characters, Barrowman's a fantastic lead for the series, which has surprised me, Gwen's alright, if a little irritating, Owen improved this week, whilst I'm fairly apathetic towards, largely because they've had very little to do thusfar. The show's three episodes in with a much larger permanent cast than Doctor Who. To expect a similar gradient of character development is slightly naive given that they can't have the same amount of screentime/exposure.
Irritating characters? They should have killed off Micky and Jackie in the first episode of Doctor Who

Fangy and grrr - November 1, 2006 10:46 PM (GMT)
I thought the episode was okay but somehow I didn't think it quite worked. I didn't feel they actually went into enough depth regards the machine and the ghosts and the gun scene between Jack and Gwen and the comedy chase scene ( which I did actually like :) ) felt totally out of place to me.
I make it that Gwen's now killed or been responsible for the deaths of at least two people ( maybe even three if you include the guy who got bit by the weevil thingy ) which is pretty good going isn't it ? :)
Next weeks episode looks cracking. :)

Oh, this is fine, if you ignore the annoying faced cockney. The world had needed a Cardiff based Angel rip off for ages now and it finally has one. I am not being sarcastic.

Burn Gorman is dire. He can't act. He's the Torchwood 'bad boy'

RTD could/should have done better on this one.

Finally got to see this ep last night, and I enjoyed it, as I enjoyed the first two.
It's hardly the best thing since sliced bread, but it's far from being as bad as some have made out. Even so, early days yet, and it could still go either way, but fingers crossed that it'll improve.
I'm with James in that I'm kind of surprised that Barrowman has been able to hold his own as well as he has. I guess I'm in a minority, but I quite like Eve Myles too.
We've only had three episodes after all, and it's not easy to guage a show so soon. Ask me again in 10 weeks!

There's certainly no denying that Noel Clarke's best contribution to the series was leaving it. The same goes for Camille Coduri as well.

I just can't get into Torchwood, and although I've taped the next episode I'm not feeling at all enthusiastic about watching it. Apart from the - been there, seen that before - aspect of the series, it just doesn't jell together for me.
When I saw the intimate gun firing episode, I thought - What the hell is Jack doing? Surely a leader has to avoid having any kind of personal relationship with the people they are responsible for? As an incident it seemed purely gratuitous, because it wasn't accompanied by any deeper explanation of what the implications were of Jack's risky behaviour.
After all he could be encouraging Gwen to think that he wants a relationship with her, and she might fall in love with him. Office relationships are a bad idea under normal circumstances. It doesn't give one confidence in Jack's judgement.

A flawed hero? Whatever next! :o
I have to say, I'm enjoying it so far. Yes it has its faults, but so did the original Doctor Who, and so has the new one.
I wouldn't say that the scene in particular that you're on about was completely gratuitous. It's a vehicle for plot. It's already been mentioned that the rest of the group know very little about Jack, just as we, the viewers do. Using Gwen to gradually feed the knowledge to the audience is an age-old tactic. The firing range scene simply played into opening up that channel, as other scenes had started to do before it.
