Crichton discovers a wormhole.

I'm not going to put anymore than that - I don't want to spoil it!

Suffice to say... here we go!

I love this episode. I'd say more but I have to find some way of actually writing it all down and as I'm pretty crap at all this I'll let Steve speak first (he's much better than me at this stuff) :D

willowroolz - July 12, 2004 08:58 AM (GMT)
Thank you! :D It's not true, though ;)

melian - July 12, 2004 09:04 AM (GMT)
Fine. Have it your way. You try to compliment someone.......

BTW - How did Crichtons dad know what Aeryn said to him, she wasn't speaking english but he acted like he understood.

What to say about this ep, wow ;)

I honestly didn't know what the hell was going on, As soon as Pilot called John up to see the wormhole, and he catches that first glimpse of Earth, wow, I had a lump in my throat. Ditto, the crew's reaction to Crichton leaving, I'm pretty sure D'Argo was crying, and Aeryn, I just wanted her to go with him.

John landing in Australia, okay nice, pretty, ocean etc, and then, oh no! men with guns. Not exactly the reception John was hoping for. So they take him back to the compound and interrogate him, on what exactly has happened to him, okay I suppose that would be likely, considering he's been missing in space for months. It suddenly got all red tapey. Paranoia soon ensues, with the arrival of another ship, and gasp! It's from Moya.

This is one of my fav parts, when D'Argo, Rygel and Aeryn are locked up and John enters, and they're all talking, but from outside you get to hear what their natural tongue sounds like. That was fantastic.

And then it goes all weird again, Rygel dissected, D'Argo taken and Aeryn scared to death, John taking his friend's side over loyalties to Earth, and busting her out of there, yay!

He was nekkid, what happened during the night

And now the penny drops, everything and everyone he sees, has been taken from his own memory, but why.

And now to the explanation, wow. Very well done. I'm so glad it wasn't a "it was all a dream" scenario. Big thumbs up for this one

Yes - I'm just being slow and a bit rubbish

Up until this point I had enjoyed Farscape but not really considered myself a fan. This was the episode that started to change all that - it's the first truly great episode of the series and it sets so many things in motion. It's the point where the character building and the back story really starts to pay dividends.

I'll watch it tonight and post more afterwards ;)

Are you ready for me to post the next episodes up, then? :D

Persephone - July 12, 2004 10:08 AM (GMT)
I don't mind, I won't watch them until later on in the week though ;)

willowroolz - July 12, 2004 10:10 AM (GMT)
Okay, no probs ;)

BTW - How did Crichtons dad know what Aeryn said to him, she wasn't speaking english but he acted like he understood.

I think this was one of the many little clues left throughout the episode that all is not as it seems. Jack can understand what Aeryn says to him because he is one of The Ancients and, presumably, they understand everything that is said as they study the crew's reactions. But what exactly did she say to him?

Anyway, I've been looking forward to reaching this point ever since we started this rewatch. As I said before, this - for me at least - is where the show really takes off. There is almost an audible "click" as everything slots into place. The characters, the acting, the script, the direction - even the music is first rate, which can't be said for much of Subvision's work up to this point. The location work is a joy, considering so much of the series to this point has been filmed on set. This episode just feels right.

The scenes as Crichton prepares to leave Moya are the most emotional so far. They are wonderfully acted, paced perfectly and don't take up so much screen time that they become sappy. The balance is just right, as are the various characters’ reactions, especially Aeryn's.

Once back on Earth it becomes something far more horrific than Crichton could ever have dreamed, seeing his comrades imprisoned and dissected. What makes this all the more scary for me is that, if it ever were to occur, this is almost definitely how we would treat aliens in our paranoid, xenophobic, self-righteous way. One of the first things Jack says to his son is that he has opened a gateway to Earth that they cannot close. It's almost like holding a mirror up to the human race and saying to us that we view everything with fear and suspicion, that only bad can come of it. Ignorance and prejudice is evident in all of the guest characters, with the exception of Jack Crichton.

Kent McCord does a wonderful job in this episode, first as the man we believe to be Jack, and then becoming completely emotionless once his secret is revealed. It's very subtle, but very well done.

But the real plaudits here go to Ben Browder and Claudia Black. Browder turns in his finest performance to date (at the time I didn't realise just how much more this guy had to give!) as Crichton lurches from joy to frustration to outrage to confusion to wonder. He does it quietly and effectively, without resorting to overacting or histrionics.

Claudia Black gives a simply wonderful performance in this episode. She can convey more feeling with her eyes than practically any other actress I know, like in the landing bay scene when she is standing in the background as Crichton says his goodbyes, or when she talks to Jack in Sebacean. But, as with Browder, this episode merely hints at what she's capable of. And she looks quite stunning in it, too.

In fact, the only thing that doesn't work in the entire episode is the puppet of The Ancient. It's hilariously bad. But, as the show continues to grow, it is a small misstep in what is an otherwise superb instalment.

So the characters have been set up, the parameters have been laid down, and all the hard work up to this point has paid off in the finest episode of the series to date. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that this is the Farscape equivalent, in terms of quality, of the leap that Buffy took between Bad Eggs and Surprise. It's almost like watching the show be reborn. If I was giving marks (which I haven't been!) I'd be tempted to give A Human Reaction a 10. But I'm not giving marks - and besides, I know now that there's even better to come.

So a 9 then... :ph43r:

I forgot to say how much I like the opening scene, where John is recording a message to his dad. It's a very quiet, very short scene, but I love the way the writers pick up on the "simple things" that you would miss if you were living life in space: the sun, day, night, just being able to tell the time by looking out of the window. It reinforces just how alien this environment is to Crichton.

Edit: Oh! And a nice bit of continuity with the "chocolate" reference

Just found this on a Farscape FAQ about A Human Reaction.

Technical Issues

A lot of people wanted to know how they created the weird-and-cool voice effect of Claudia Black's alien dialogue. Nicholas Breslin, one of the many talented members of the production crew for Farscape, e-mailed TGUT with this to say:
"As the Dialogue Editor on the episode I can assure you this is not a created effect. The talented Ms. Black can actually create that bizarre clicking sound with 'backward sounding' speech naturally! - Playing it backwards only reveals this truth. (There would also be enormous technical difficulties encountered with shooting the picture to backwards mimed dialogue. - Sync would be a nightmare.) Furthermore, obviously we have access to the location sound tapes -- and what you hear is what she said. Pretty cool."

Thanks, Nick. Couldn't have put it better ourselves. And kudos to Claudia Black for being her own sound F/X creator!

:o

Do you think they added just a touch too much milk powder to the water for the rain :D

Just slightly

This was the first episode that I saw on the Beeb when it originally aired and thoroughly enjoyed.

As stated in previous threads, I have a soft spot for planet-bound episodes, and this is freakin' Earth for Christ's sake !!

It's difficult to fault this one at all. The teaser's great, the story evolves nicely at a constant and appropriate pace, and it feels like an important episode. Not to mention, there's some stirling w**k from all involved.

The illusion's kept up pretty well as well, for the most part, in fact you don't really begin to question things until they start slicing and dicing Rygel. Or at least I didn't, not to any great degree anyway !!

The story was a nice, and unique examination of how we'd react as a species should contact ever be made. To be honest, whilst it's a frightening conclusion, it's also very honest, and only highlights want an infantile species we are in many respects.

Stand out scenes, as others have pointed out the "farewell" scenes are fantastic to watch, likewise some of the scenes between Crichton Junior and Senior. it's also abundantly apparent at this point that most scenes between BB and CB raise the bar as well.

One final point on the 'how did Crichton Sr understand Aeryn at the end' question; The guy's an Ancient yes, so he obviously did understand, but he made a point earlier in the episode of not understanding her, to the point of having to ask Crichton Jr. Presumably his guard slipped later in the episode. But, what did she say ??????

All in all, a great episode

 It is a fabulous episode.

Kent Mcord is superb as are Ben and Claudia again. Up until now John has desparately wanted to return home but this makes him question, can he share the wonders.

I was still upset to see Rygel being sliced open. Its wonderful how it slowly unravels great writing :) It is so rare for a show to sit and make you think about whats happening and why.

definitely one of my favourite episodes of S1.

LMAO @ BB and CB on the commentary, re Crichton and Aeryn's night together...

CB: And the shagging scene that nobody got to see.
BB: Oh I've got the video of that at home.
CB (in filthy voice): Oh really... :naughty:

:lmao:
