Title: 1.15 Durkha Returns

willowroolz - July 11, 2004 10:55 AM (GMT)
A miscalculation during starburst brings Moya and crew into contact with a mysterious and powerful race called the Nebari. Surprisingly they bring with them Rygel's first Peacekeeper torturer, Selto Durkha, whose mind has been cleansed and is now being used as a servile dogsbody. The same fate is about to befall another of their captives, a young Nebari rebel...

Yeah Chiana!!

Ok, this is the episode I have been waiting for, the introduction of my favorite character Chiana.

This episode introduces yet another interesting species, the Nebari. How creepy are those guys and their 'mental cleansing'? They were the ones who destroyed the Zelbinian (PK Tech Girl), which just goes to show what a powerful force they are in this part of space. A force to rival the Peacekeepers perhaps?

Rygels worst nightmare come true. His torturer has returned, albeit a little different from the last time he saw him. Well at least until Rygels sense of vengeance gets the better of him. He didn't care if he hurt or killed Crichton, or that the bomb would hurt Moya, all he wanted was Durkha dead. And who knew the little guy was capable of making a bomb? His hands just don't look that dexterous ;) And basically his little fit of pique is what caused Durkha to be able to slip his mental leash and wreak havoc on poor Moya. Bad Rygel, bad.

As for Chiana, I know that she comes across as rude, violent, careless, sluttish and adolescent in this episode but let me assure you that, although all this and more is true, she does get more likable as the series goes on ;) But at least the character does make a big impact in this first appearance and it seems that she will make an interesting addition to the crew. And did she kill Salis? Who knows....

I think this is the first time we encounter the show's trademark trippy camera work, isn't it? Tony Tilse's direction on this episode starts to set the tone for the rest of the series - he gives it a very distinct look that eventually develops into something quite unique.

It's a good episode all round. The writers' knack of introducing recurring or regular characters without fanfare is well shown here, as Chiana makes her welcome entrance. A lot of the mannerism's and inflections that Gigi brings to the role are already present and accounted for, which is good to see, although her accent and the hyper attitudes aren't quite there yet. However, there is something brutal about the way she is tortured by Salis that made me feel a bit uncomfortable, especially seeing as he obviously gets some kind of sadistic pleasure out of it.

I love the scene where Durkha finally becomes himself. Aeryn had been so ready to treat him as something of a hero that she is caught completely off guard. David Wheeler does an excellent job of lulling us into a false sense of security here, although we know Durkha's going to revert to type in the end.

I like the way they are dealing with Moya's pregnancy, although this is the second episode on the trot in which they have used her baby-induced problems with starbursting as a plot device. It's kind of scary the lengths Durkha will go to to take control, being prepared to kill the baby.

Agree with Karen about Rygel and the bomb. That was very well done and, in addition to what Karen's already said, it is a good set up for the finale when Crichton cooks up his own little present for Durkha. I like the scene at the end between Rygel and Aeryn, and the way she points out his double standards to him. The characters are all coming on in leaps and bounds.

Ultimately, though, this episode belongs to Chiana and her introduction to the Farscape universe. The final scene between her and John is very well played, the look on her face indicating that she has not been treated with this respect in at least a very long time.

I have my reservations about Chianna. She looks like an interesting character, but the head tick gets on my nerves (It did with Illyria too ;) ) I'll take your word Melian, that I'll grow to like her :D

Back to the ep, yay, continuity, following on from events in PK Tech Girl. So now we know what happened to the Peacekeeper ship. Totally with Melian, the Nebari mind cleansing, creepy, not too unlike a lobotomy, I'm under the impression it takes a hell of a lot longer than that.

I both loved and hated Rygel in this ep, hated him, for the bomb, such lack of regard for the safety of anyone else, and obviously because the result was Durkha, able to regain control of his mind. Loved him for his bravery, when he was strapped to the table.

This must have been hard for Aeryn too. I get the impression that Durkha was one of her heroes, so it must be true what they say, you'll always be let down, meeting your heroes face to face.

Definitely an interesting ep, is Chianna going to be a rival for Aeryn for the affection of Crichton

One word about Durkha again, is it me, or did he bear some resemblance to Draco's dad in Harry Potter

I'd have to agree with that assessment Steve. The episode itself was an interesting one, giving us a continuation (of sorts) of some of the threads started in PK Tech Girl.

The Nebari seems suitably creepy, and loved the ambiguity of who the actual murderer was

Just one final thought on Chiana,

Chiana was supposed to die at the end wasn't she but they saw how fabulous her character was and kept her.

I think she makes a wonderful addition to the show, she is vunerable and yet manipulative at the same time. It is interesting that John is the only one who is willing to take a chance on helping her but the crew let her stay - reluctantly showing also that he is having an effect on them.

Love Durkha great villain ( not like Jason Isaacs  ) and love Rygel's reaction to him.

:)

I think John, as the complete outsider, may have seen an ally in her :)

Yes, David Kemper saved her, literally, from the chop

Nah John's just a big softy

willowroolz - January 13, 2005 11:35 AM (GMT)
That's not doing anything for my impression of him

Ah I've been waiting to watch this episode since I started re watching season one again . I really like this episode and it's largely down to Chiana making her first appearance on the show. I didn't realise that she was initially meant to get killed off! :o I'm so glad they kept Chiana, I can't imagine her not being in it now.

I love the continuation of this episode from Pk Tech Girl and everybody's characters' stay true to form. Rygel is typically selfish and one minded in getting his revenge over Durkha at any cost. D'Argo inquires about the vessel that destroyed the Zelbinian. Aeryn Sun reverts to her peacekeeper past to revere Durkha as a hero only to discover he's a traitor. while Crichton shows compassion to the prisoner, Chiana.

I was quite surprised that Aeryn got her arse whooped so easily on the command, as I am every time I see this :o . Aeryn seemed genuinely distressed and out of her depth when captured by Durkha, as he threatened to torture her with the living death, which is very out of character. Rygel's bravery (and we don't say that very often about Rygel!) no doubt helped save Aeryn as he confronted his demons.

I really liked Durkha's awakening from his mind cleansing, which has already been said above is quite a creepy and disturbing trait of the Nebari, as you could see the evil growing in his eyes as he tried to strangle Rygel, then nobody believes it happened.

Unfortunately my mind's gone blank but it is a great introduction to Chiana and a very good episode in itself.

 I find it is one of my most rewatched episodes

A great story, love the introduction of the Nebari, Chiana of course :yahoo: and Durkha

I also love that they never actually get Chi to own up to killing Sallis, even when it is mentioned in Season 3 she still doesn't admit to it

star_fury - April 3, 2006 10:36 PM (GMT)
do you think she killed Sallis? I wasn't certain it was her... Or perhaps I just don't want to believe. :ponder:

laughitupfuzzball - April 4, 2006 10:38 AM (GMT)
I think she did, she was certainly capable of it and had a big motive for doing so, I'd rather think it was her than Durhka.

If she had confessed to John would he still have helped her? probably but she didn't know that.

He did deserve it
