Title: The New Timeslot

Crichton Kicks - July 10, 2004 09:55 PM (GMT)
With the schedules now announced we can see what competition Enterprise will be facing when it moves to it's new Friday night (10pm) timeslot this Fall.

A lot has been made of the timeslot being the place where the X Files found it's audience, however I'm pretty sure it wasn't going up against heavyweights like JAG or Third Watch. On the bright side, it was never likely that Enterprise would outperform any show from CBS or NBC anyway. The good news is that the competition on UPN's closest rivals Fox and WBs is moderately weak.

Still, JAG and Third Watch are going to take up a whole chunk of that Friday night potential audience :(

I think basically ENTERPRISE will survive if the executives at Paramount want it too. If not they will put less and less money into it until they can justify a valid reason for pulling it that the fans cannot argue with.

I hope the new season grows from strength to strength so that they cannot justify it but we will have to wait and see.

I wouldn't be optimistic - it seems with Berman's talk of the potential film dealing with the Romulan War that he's not planning on Enterprise's continuation post S4.

Personally I took that news as confirmation that Enterprise won't last past next season.

Enterprise needs the Romulan war, just as DS9 needed the Dominion war. Even with the talk of the foundation of the Federation, I still don't think that'll be enough to bring enough viewers back. The Romulan war is such a simple, and obvious arc to follow, what's even worse is all the races that have been shoehorned into the series as a gimmick, hello ?? The Romulans are supposed to feature, yet they're the ones we'll probably see nothing more of.

Braga may have effectively gone, but until they pension off Berman Trek's still in serious trouble, the guy's a loser plain and simple, get him out and get someone in who's not creatively bankrupt

Am I missing something here? Wasn't the first time the Federation encountered the Romulans in TOS episode Balance Of Terror? My Star Trek history is a little rusty, but the war occurred in the 22nd century, didn't it, with primitive weapons, ships and no visual communication? How can they feature in Enterprise? I'm confused!

They can and already have featured on Enterprise Steve. Season 2's MINEFIELD introduced them.

The Romulan-Human war takes place during Enterprise's timeframe, this was one of the highlights that fans championed when the series was first announced.

There was no direect visual meeting between the Romulans and Starfleet until TOS, however that's not to say that we, the viewers can't see them. There's also the success of B5, for a large part of it, there was no direct visual meeting between the Humans, the shadows and the Vorlons.
