Title: Robin Hood
Fangy and grrr - October 8, 2006 04:04 PM (GMT)
What did you think ?
I thought it was okay, not great and bit ropey in parts but not without a bit of charm.
Its susposed to improve in the 2nd episode so I think I'll stick with it and see if it gets better. :)

Robin Hood debut watched by 8.2m More than eight million people tuned in to watch the BBC's new £8m drama series Robin Hood, unofficial overnight figures show. Ratings for the first episode, starring Jonas Armstrong as Robin Hood, averaged 8.2m. It beat ITV1's Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway with 7m.
The new series of Strictly Come Dancing beat ITV1's The X-Factor, with 8.8m and 8.4m viewers respectively.
BBC One controller Peter Fincham said he was "thrilled" with the ratings.
Peak audience
Saturday also saw the launch of the new BBC idents, which feature kites, surfers and swimming hippos, while the National Lottery: 1 vs 100 attracted 6.2m viewers.
The show, hosted by Dermot O'Leary, coincided with the second part of The X-Factor, which reached a peak audience of 9.2m at 2100BST.
During The X Factor judges Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh whittled down the contestants to 12.
An ITV spokesman said: "We are thrilled that nearly 10 million people tuned in to discover who were the final 12 acts who will go on to sing on the live shows next week."
Robin Hood, which also stars Keith Allen and Richard Armitage, has been updated for the 21st Century.
Green tights have been replaced with trendy medieval attire, including combat trousers, desert boots and even a hoodie for the lead character. (it feel a little xena or hercule clothes like, imo)
Mr Fincham said: "I'm thrilled that last night's schedule proved such a hit with BBC One audiences.
"A very strong start for Robin Hood, followed up by an exceptional return for Strictly Come Dancing, and 1 vs 100 is really hitting its stride.
"Together with the launch of our new idents, this was an important day for BBC One."

it was funny in place, not a strong first episode but it introduce the characters (the sherif and the king are very so/so, ), the fights were ok. let see the second episode
Crichton Kicks - October 8, 2006 09:33 PM (GMT)
Some bits were very good, others were very average.
It tried to be smarter than it needed to be, and someone should have told them that Jet Li didn't get the leading role.
It's got potential though, so I'll definitely be checking out next week's episode
goth willow fan - October 8, 2006 10:38 PM (GMT)
It's never good to judge a series solely on it's first episode, they have to spend too much time setting up the premis and introducing all the principal characters.
I thought it was enjoyable fluff and will certainly watch the next one.
Outta Sight - October 9, 2006 08:15 AM (GMT)
I thought it was pretty good but then I'm probably a bit biased having been born in Nottingham and grew up on stories of Robin Hood so I've always had a soft spot for him  My only niggle is the accents, more Lancashire than Nottinghamshire

I did notice them using the beginning of TSOM's Alice for the trails though :ph43r:

I'll say it again: Robin Hood without Judi Trott is just wrong :snooty:
I agree with both of you, but I'm prepared to give it a chance. If I'd based my opinions of other shows I like purely on the first episode I probably wouldn't have watched any of them* :lmao:
*Disclaimer: Apart from The X Files where the first episode is still one of my favourites :snooty:

We recorded it as we were at a party that evening. Reading through this, perhaps it's not one worth bothering with? :ermm:
Nick - October 9, 2006 05:26 PM (GMT)
Nah I liked it.
It was pretty throwaway stuff but as interesting as the new Dr Who episode that I watched which was similarly entertaining (K9, schoolkids, a previous companion, aliens that eat people, chemicals)
Definitely be watching the next one and Marion is lovely
Fangy and grrr - October 9, 2006 07:13 PM (GMT)
I definitely agree they were trying too hard with the special effects / action scenes and its certainly no Doctor Who but I liked the Robin / Much ( ? ) relationship and I thought the Robin / Marion scene showed potential.

Robin Hood is scholarly subject After bestriding Sherwood Forest, Robin Hood is set to sweep through university cloisters as part of a new MA course. Nottingham University will provide the first Masters programme in the world on the legend and his band of merry men.
As part of the one-year course in Robin Hood studies, students will w**k with 15th century manuscripts in looking at the outlaw's place in English society.
The course will also use stories, songs and plays to probe the medieval world of the Nottingham legend.
The course, which has been announced just after the start of the BBC's Robin Hood drama series, will start in October next year.
Dr Rob Lutton, medieval history lecturer, said: "The course provides an exciting opportunity for anyone with an interest in the origins and development of England's most enduring legendary figure."

My Brother was telling me yesterday that he saw a documentary about Robin Hood sometime last week, and they had a piece on a bloke from Nottingham who dresses up as Robin Hood at the weekends and goes trudging through Sherwood Forest.
What a hoot.......

Eldred - October 14, 2006 02:03 PM (GMT)
I've already decided not to watch this series, I can't watch everything.
I've noticed though, from the pics in the RT that Robin uses a recurve bow rather than a classic English longbow. This is not an anachronism - Robin has been away, fighting in the Holy Land, and his enemy there, the Saracens, who were at that time more technologically and culturally sophisticated than medieval Britain, used recurve bows.
If I remember correctly, their recurve bows were made of laminated wood and horn, and had a tremendous kick, with the longest firing range of any bow. It would not be suprising then, that Robin would have chosen to use one.

I have to say, I still remain unconvinced with this one. The second episode was undoubtedly better than the first but it's still got the feel of a 5pm 'Robin Hood in the style of Hercules the Legendary Journeys' about it. How many times can Robin enter Nottingham, assault the sherifF, and get away again without anyone being killed? It's not a 7pm show. At the moment it's far too tame, and far too bland for my liking.
Rapidly losing interest.

All the way through this week's episode I kept thinking "is it just me or is there a very homo-erotic theme to Robin and Much's relationship" and then at the end they pretty much came out and said that Much is gay  Great stuff

Did anyone else think that the outlaw that was leading the pack that attacked Robin and Much bore a striking resemblance to Robert Webb of Mitchell & Webb? I thought it was him until I saw the credits
Darris - October 17, 2006 11:08 PM (GMT)
I missed the first episode but I did watch the second episode, I have to say it wasn't that impressive, it certainly isn't a patch on the Michael Praed version. Either that or I have forgotten how rubbish it was when I was younger.
grrrarrrgh - October 21, 2006 07:46 AM (GMT)
I'm quite enjoying it, but it does not have the WOW factor. My boyfriend thinks they are trying too hard to be witty and went to bed when I watched the rerun on Beeb 3 last night.
Edited to add - I think Keith Allen is doing a great job as the Sheriff - he is my fave character so far!
Sparkle Motion - October 24, 2006 09:54 AM (GMT)
Still finding this hard going. The story was slightly better but the acting is still dire.
I want to kill Mutch.
Why are they all wearing hoodies? Why was the boy that was killed wearing a modern striped t-shirt? The costume budget must be pence.
The arrow sound effect is grating even more.

Robin returns for second series A second series of hit Saturday night drama Robin Hood has been commissioned by the BBC. The current series has so far averaged an audience of 6.6 million on BBC One in the competitive early evening slot.
Jonas Armstrong and Lucy Griffiths will return as Robin and Marian, along with Keith Allen and Richard Armitage as the Sheriff and Sir Guy.
Filming is due to start in Budapest in the spring and the series will be screened later next year.
BBC Fiction controller Jane Tranter said: "The cast have engaged and delighted a whole new generation with this fresh and modern retelling of Robin Hood.
"Keith Allen's captivating portrayal of the menacing Sheriff coupled with the great performances from our young cast headed up by Jonas Armstrong equals compelling drama."
The new 13-part series will once again be written by Dominic Minghella.
