Title: New Show: "Heroes" (Spoilery, In Due Course)
Description: Season 1 of ?
TV Yank - October 4, 2006 12:17 AM (GMT)
The once mighty network NBC has been stumbling along as of late. It needs something solid in the ratings, and HEROES might be it.
I don't need to describe this much talked about show, so I'll confine myself to my reactions.
Episode 1 was like many TV shows that presents the characters before plunging into the plot. It depends on how you like the character's story. I liked some of their stories. Was bored with others.
Episode 2 switched to high gear and was very enjoyable. And it still had time to introduce new characters.
Imagination and writing are pretty good. Pretty good production values, too. Acting not spectacular but good enuf. (On the latter issue, funnily, there's an IMDb entry for pretty Ali Larter where some people argue over whether the ex-model can act. She has demonstrated competence to me. We'll just have to wait for a really demanding moment to really test her skills. Besides, how could I hate someone who'd say this: "I hate pretty-looking boys. I'd rather have a guy with a potbelly than one who's in the gym all the time and watches what he eats." I could  a beauty like that.)
Surprising diversity in this show. Not just Americans. Altho, the actors playing foreigners are primarily American. The East Indian actor was born and raised here. The Japanese guy seems to have been over here from sometime now. Judging by the accents, all the Texans were imported from elsewhere.
Playing Ali Larter's precocious son is a precocious 8-year-year, Noah Gray-Cabey, who has performed as a piano soloist since aged 4.
I have high hopes for this show. Almost as high as NBC's.
[I know there are capitalization problems in my title. I just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.]

I've had this problem before John. Strangely, it will let me get the capitalization right when I'm editing the title though. Weird.....
Pretty much agree with your comments on the show's opener. Some of the character stories were more interesting than others. Given the nature of the show I thought the premiere was a little subdued in places. That being said, I still have high hopes for it. This is the show I've been waiting for most this year I think.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first episode, and having watched half of the second I can say that I am still loving it!!
It seems that the plot thickens with each new thing we are shown

NBC has given a full-season order for its hit superhero series Heroes, the network announced. Heroes is averaging a 5.7 rating among adults aged 18-49 and 13.5 million viewers overall, making it the number-one new series this fall in adults 18-49, tied with ABC's Brothers & Sisters, NBC said.
"Heroes has delivered exceptional ratings since its premiere, and we're even more impressed with the quality of the upcoming episodes," Kevin Reilly, president, NBC Entertainment, said in a statement. "We have complete confidence in creator-executive producer Tim Kring. The best is yet to come over the course of a full season with this newest drama sensation." |

I'm glad this got a full season. I'm really getting into it.
Loving the character dynamics most of all, and the revelation about how long they've got until the "big event" adds a time constraint (24 with superpowers anyone? )
Very graphic in some scenes, but bloody well done. But with Jeph Loeb as one of the producers (he's a big comic book writer, and one of my favourites) how could it not be?
Psycho Jack - October 6, 2006 09:55 AM (GMT)
Yes, good show indeed. Lots and lots of potential. Great ending to the second episode...
James - regarding thread titles, I think you have the "Stop shouting in topic titles?" option turned on.
If you go to Admin Panel > System Settings > Topics, Posts & Polls ... you'll see an option called "Stop shouting in topic titles?".
I think this is what is causing problems like this:
NBC's New Show ---> Nbc's New Show ...etc.

Good news. :yahoo: The NBC suits must be jumping with joy, as well.
I haven't checked out BROTHERS & SISTERS and I probably won't since it doesn't seem like my kind of show.

You also have to wonder if it's a knee-jerk reaction to the (so far) under-performance of Studio 60, and (the now cancelled) Kidnapped. I think NBC saw one of it's shows actually live up to expectations and jumped at the chance to keep it around

I wonder if it's partly an impulse to promote the show -- to shout to the viewing public "this is a good show -- its going to stay around -- check it out!"
However, the answer may be more mundane. The network needs to tell the production staff and cast to rev up and start filming the rest of the episdoes as soon as possible.

OMG! Episode 3 was even better than the last 2 :o

Awesome ending to Ep 3. :fear:
Keep in mind: there's a genetic component to these powers.
In some promo, there was a promise that the heroes will start meeting each other in the next episode.
Crichton Kicks - October 12, 2006 08:52 PM (GMT)
Heroes just seems to get better with every episode, I'm really loving this and Jericho
The ending, Vic let out a huge gasp at the ending, which amused me no end
Still liking Hiro the best, him and his mate, the bright-eyed innocents, in stark contrast to practically everyone else!
I think we can start to see already that some of the characters will be meeting shortly. The video that Hiro's mate keeps watching, isn't that Ali Larter's character?
Can't wait for the next chapter

Yes that is Ali Larter's character. That's certainly a piece of film I'd like to carry with me.
willowroolz - October 16, 2006 08:56 PM (GMT)
Brilliant, absolutely loving it
The end of episode 3 was shocking and funny at the same time.
Hiro's my favourite, too, he's one of the most refreshing characters to have come along in ages :)
I'm intrigued by most of the characters, especially the artist (Isaac?) - I'm assuming they're going to do a lot more with him.
Good to see Greg Grunberg finally get a role to get his teeth into as well
Add another one to the Ali Larter fan club - gives me an excuse to watch Final Destination again I suppose :shifty: :naughty:
TV Yank - October 17, 2006 09:40 PM (GMT)
It finally dawned on me the the "Super" is missing from "Heroes" -- the typical designation for comic book protagnoists. Perhaps, they thought that would be too comic book-y. Or perhaps they knew that we'd be applying that adjective soon enuf-- and saying "SUPERHEROES is super!" sounds silly. But, saying "HEROES is super!" sounds just right. And that's all I wanted to say after seeing episode 4.
melian - October 18, 2006 09:18 AM (GMT)
Episode 4. Amazing! This show just gets better and better each week
I am in complete agreement with the statement above. Heroes is super! :D
jamiearmour - October 18, 2006 09:28 AM (GMT)
This show is turning into the show that Mutant X should have been, and I'm so glad that it is
It's compulsive viewing :D

HEROES Marathon! This Sunday! 3 episodes in a row!
What does that say about a TV show 4-eppies old? :ponder:
jamiearmour - October 19, 2006 08:05 PM (GMT)
Are they all new eps or just a recap of the first 3?

Recaps sweetie ;)
Anyone want to take a guess at what is after Claire in Issac's last picture?

LMAO at Hiro and the game of roulette
1x04. Fracking brilliant. That is all I have to say.
Crichton Kicks - October 19, 2006 11:14 PM (GMT)
Definitely the best episode so far
Seeing all the different threads beginning to converge just adds a new dimension to the show.
Heroes is to Mutant X what the original Star Trek would be to Andromeda!
jamiearmour - October 19, 2006 11:46 PM (GMT)
That would be because of the creative forces behind it. They've actually got a comic book creator in the credits (Jeph Loeb  )
The plot strands are definitely converging, as you say James, but still, I'm only part way to understanding what's going on   But that's why I keep coming back week after week.

Potentially. We are only 4 episodes in, but it's got potential. Lots of it, and seems to know where it's going and how to get there. Which is a good sign

A bit early to say, but it's definitely hit the ground running. I can't remember many shows getting off to this good a start. The X Files set the standard for that by which I judge all other shows' opening episodes :)
Of course The X Files became a bit erratic in quality for a while after the magnificent first four episodes, so Heroes 1x05 could conceivably overtake it in my books next week

Probably the same thing as Prison Break - I seem to remember them doing something similar pretty early on in that series' run.
It makes sense though - the series is getting very strong reviews, and it makes sense to allow people who have just heard of it a chance to catch up. From what I hear though, there is some legal problem involving a certain garbage disposal unit which is stoping them showing Episode 1...

I'm not sure we'll ever see anything reach the universal popularity of the Original Star Trek.
Don't get me wrong, I think Heroes is great, and I can honestly see it running for a while, but Star Trek's just a phenomenon. Its popularity was very much a product of its time. Fewer networks, far less market fragmentation, a lot less relative competition, etc etc.
That being said, Heroes could actually achieve the near-impossible and take itself mainstream. The numbers obtained thus far might even indicate that it's already there. I wonder to a certain degree whether Lost has paved the way for more of these kind of shows making their mark to a wider audience that the usual small genre crowd.
The production values of Heroes are superb. Stylistically it's hard to fault. It's got a decent cast, no major stars, but a very solid ensemble that looks like being a nicely balanced mix. More than that though, as Jamie's correctly observed, it's got Jeph Loeb involved. Some of his w**k with Batman, Superman and Spider-Man, are amongst the best written for those characters. The Long Halloween and Superman For All Seasons in particular are just fantastic. If he can bring that quality to Heroes, we could be in for something special indeed!
