Title: Ugly Betty
Description: Estupenda!

TV Yank - September 29, 2006 04:17 PM (GMT)
Selma Hayek must be feeling guity about the career she has built on her stunning beauty. She's behind this new comedy/drama based on a South American show about an ugly duckling in the glossy world of a high fashion magazine.

This show would have been good without young America Ferrera (yes--that's the actress' real name). But it's hard for me to think beyond her. Dozens of leading actresses must have watched the show slack-jawed, reassessing their chances of receiving "best actress" awards this year. This 22-year-old actress of Honduran descent is amazing. She grabbed my attention and won my heart at first sight.

Sure, the show is campy. But, what do you call "camp" that works? This one adds nice embellishments to familiar material. And, it has Vanessa Williams as the villainess -- who better to represent the inner nastiness of beautiful people?

For British viewers, there's a Scottish actress named Ashly Jensen who has a supporting role as an ally of Betty.

If you aren't too beautiful, check it out.

[I tried not to be spoilery in this post. However, just in case, could a moderator add "Spoilers" to the title of this thread? Thanks.]

Ashley Jensen of course being currently seen in the second season of Extras alongside Ricky Gervais

I'm not going to do anything around spoiler tags John as I didn't find your initial post to be spoilerish to any degree

Es stupido! I think the subtitle should have said "Estupenda!".

Ratings were VERY promising for UGLY BETTY. It's 16.1 million viewers almost tied with the popular SURVIVOR's 16.6. And the audience grew over the hour. (I don't know if those are overnite ratings or finals.)

Overnights I think John. Finals tend to take a few days to filter down :)

Watched the first three episodes of this with Vic this evening, she loved it, and quite surprisingly I enjoyed it myself! :o

America Ferrera is fantastic in the lead role, but beyond that Eric Mabius is superb as well, and the casting of Vanessa Williams and obvious masterstroke. Then there's perrenial shift parent Alan Dale

HEROES and UGLY BETTY are my two favs of the new season.

Did you notice Selma Hayek in the Spanish-language soap opera the father watches? Nice as she is, I'd prefer the cutie that appeared as the nun in soap opera in the latest episode.

Yeah, we saw her in the first episode, saw what we thought was her in the second, which turned out not to be, so assumed that we were mistaken about the first episode, only to see in the third episode that she's behind the show!

I thought that was Selma Hayek

Just watched the first episode, it was pretty much a 45min chick flick. I loved it

I love Betty's nephew, he's hilarious :D

Guess who's guesting in next week's episode. That's episode 6.

Episode 5 was fun. It guest starred a tall and talented jinx of many a tv series.

PS, here's a nice article on the beginnings of UGLY BETTY.

Ellen talks to Woods, the highest-paid athlete in the world, about his sport and his life in a successful year marred by the death of his father, Earl, on 3 May 2006. Plus, gorgeous America Ferrera chats to Ellen about being 'uglified' for her lead role as an unattractive girl in the ABC comedy-drama series Ugly Betty.(Stereo)

America Ferrara joined Hugh Laurie on THE TONIGHT SHOW with Jay Leno on Nov 9th, Looking very pretty and being very personable.

She explained to Jay that "America" isn't an unusual name in Latin America - that she grew up in a mostly Jewish community - and about her early acting efforts (auditioning for tv commercials and getting a lot for bail bonds companies - she knew Selma Hayek before UGLY BETTY became a Hayek project.

Channel 4 to get 'Ugly' on Friday nights
Wednesday, November 8 2006, 13:45 UTC - by Joanne Oatts

US acquisition, Ugly Betty, is to air on Channel 4 from January as part of its Friday night line up.

The show, which stars British actress Ashley Jensen, has proved a global hit, with US network ABC signing up for full-season run last month.

The series will certainly help Channel 4's Friday night ratings, which have recently seen a dip with shows like Unanimous failing to draw in the viewers.

The broadcaster is believed to be looking to Betty to return the channel to the audience figures attracted by a Friday night line-up centred around US imports, as with Friends and Sex and the City.

January also sees the return of Celebrity Big Brother to Channel 4.

Ugly Betty's beautiful message
By Peter Bowes
BBC News, Los Angeles

A new sitcom featuring a supposedly ugly office assistant at a fashion magazine has become a huge hit in the United States.

Ugly Betty follows the life of Betty Suarez, who comes from a struggling Latino family and has no interest in the glamorous world of high fashion.

Betty works as an executive assistant to a womanising boss at Mode fashion magazine.

The character, played by the 22-year-old actress America Ferrera, is short with bushy eyebrows and braces on her teeth.

She wears drab clothes and thick-rimmed glasses. She also has a heart of gold.

Ferrera made her film debut in 2002 playing an overweight teenager in Real Women Have Curves.

The role of Betty came along when the show's producer, Mexican-born actress Salma Hayek, approached the fledgling actress.

"I read the script and fell in love with the character," says Ferrera.

"Whether you like it or not when you're playing yourself, or something close to yourself, you want to make sure that it's the best of you that's out there.

"But because I get to play Betty and put on this costume and dive into that character, it also gives me more freedom to go as far as I can in the acting and not be concerned with what I'm looking like."

Bucking the trend

Ugly Betty was inspired by the Colombian telenovela, Yo Soy Betty, La Fea, which translates as I Am Betty, the Ugly One.

The series, which will be broadcast on Channel 4 and E4 from January, was adapted to an American setting by former Oscar nominee Hayek.

"The original was groundbreaking," says Hayek. "I immediately jumped on it.

"It's about the fish-out-of-water, the person who is not conventional in the way she looks, the way she talks," explains Hayek.

"But they are incredibly smart and hard workers, and they get ahead in life using that."

British actress Ashley Jenson, who starred alongside Ricky Gervais in Extras, plays Betty's seamstress pal in the show, while 40-year-old producer Hayek makes several on-screen appearances.

But Ferrera is the standout star and has become an overnight sensation in the role.

Bucking the trend on US television, where sitcoms, soaps and primetime dramas invariably feature beautiful women, the actress has attracted glowing reviews from viewers and critics.

"Betty is a new kind of TV star," says Luaine Lee, a columnist with the McClatchy-Tribune News Service.

"She's not beautiful, she's not blonde, she's not dumb - so she's the antithesis of what we have usually laughed at in our sitcoms.

"America Fererra is brilliant in the role, so natural and so unassuming."

'Timeless' format

The show has proven to be a major ratings success for the ABC network in the US. The series has struck a chord with 16 million viewers every week - all rooting for Betty.

For Ferrera, playing ugly, is a beautiful thing.

"I couldn't imagine having my job or my ratings based on making sure that I maintain a healthy physique or workout five hours a day, on top of doing the work," she says.

"The stories and the messages have universal appeal and people love that it's not based at all on physical trends or definitions of what beautiful is.

"There's always another pretty face down the line, but it's fun to be on a show that is quite timeless."

The actress likens the role to that of Bridget in the film, Bridget Jones's Diary.

"She was the underdog and you wanted to see her win and you wanted her to get the guy."

"Most of us are not TV stars and we don't look like we belong on television. We're just normal people who also deserve to have good lives."

"I think we all feel inadequate in one way or another," adds columnist Lee.

"Americans also tend to champion the underdog. When someone like Betty comes along who's naive, down-to-earth, caring and sincere, we feel relieved that there is something real in this world of phoney and superficial values."

Ugly Betty airs in the UK on Channel 4 from Friday 5 January

i just heard that one of the french channel is going to show the german version of ugly betty and then will show the US version at the end of the year (wonder if there will be a french version)

why show the exact same serie? i suppose the family life of betty (or lisa for the german version) is going to be different but it seem the work story-line is the same in the two versions.  :ponder:
