Stardate: 44012.36 Picard meets with his older brother in France, and contemplates resigning his Starfleet commission after his ordeal with the Borg. Worf's adoptive parents spend time with their son on the Enterprise, and succeed in embarrassing him in front of his crewmates.

On paper I really shouldn't like this episode. It has all the makings of a soap opera, right down to Dennis McCarthy's as-per-usual daytime-tv-type score. I couldn't care less about Wesley's message from Jack, and Worf's parents are intensely annoying and overplayed by two actors who should know better <_<
Ah but...
The whole Picard side of the story makes it worthwhile. For once the reset button isn't pushed and we get to see the fallout from his experiences at the hands of the Borg.
The first shot of him walking down the grove towards his old home is one of the most memorable of the whole series, for me. The whole principle of Picard being tempted away from Starfleet is very well handled. Somewhere at the back of my mind I have this niggling doubt as to whether or not Picard would be allowed to continue as captain of the Federation's flagship after his ordeal, at least without extended leave and rigorous observation and questioning by those in command - yet it seems to be left entirely up to him, which seems a bit odd.
Jeremy Kemp is simply outstanding as Robert, a quite marvellous performance that makes you hate the character for over half an hour until you realise what he's actually up to, that he's trying to get Picard to crack and let the grief out. The linchpin scene where Robert pursues Picard through the garden to the vineyard is superb. Somehow, the sight of the pair of them covered in mud like a couple of children should be funny, but the weight of the dialogue, the sight of Picard finally cracking, and the brilliance of the acting from both of them turns it into one of the series' finest scenes.
For these reasons alone this is one of my favourite episodes. The final scenes, with Picard saying goodbye, Robert's expression as he hugs him and then him telling Marie to "let him [Rene] dream" are just wonderful. Whenever I see this episode it annoys me even more about the offhand way these characters were dealt with in Generations.
Oh yes, and up to this point this was the first ever Star Trek episode not to feature a scene on the bridge of the Enterprise, wasn't it? It's quite unique :)

Couldn't agree more on this one Steve.
You've pretty much said anything and everything I'd want to say about this one, so I'll just agree, fantastic!
As much as I love Generations, I'd have to agree with the disappointing treatment of Robert and Rene. A shame too that it wasn't the same actor playing Rene, but to be fair, with it being 5 years since they shot Family he wouldn't have looked right for the part anyway!
Great episode, truly great.
