The BBC have this morning issued a press release confirming plans for a Sarah-Jane Smith spin-off starting with a with a 60-minute special to be broadcast in early 2007 and a full series due later in the year.

The series - The Sarah Jane Adventures - stars Elizabeth Sladen (right) and Yasmin Paige as Sarah's 13 year old neighbour Maria.

It has also been announced that robot dog K-9 is to appear in the special but will not be in the full series.

The full press release reads:

"Multi-award winning writer Russell T Davies has written a brand new series for CBBC called The Sarah Jane Adventures. It stars one of The Doctor's most famous companions, investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith.

Russell T Davies says: "Children's TV has a fine history of fantasy thrillers - I loved them as a kid, and they were the very first things I ever wrote. So it's brilliant to return to such a vivid and imaginative area of television."

The series begins with a 60-minute special which will be broadcast in early 2007 with the series due later in the year.

Set in present-day West London, the programme stars original Sarah Jane actress Elizabeth Sladen and Yasmin Paige, who plays her 13-year-old neighbour Maria.

The two form an unlikely alliance to fight evil alien forces at w**k in Britain.

Elizabeth says: "I left Sarah Jane but she never left me. I can't wait to return to Cardiff to find out what's going to happen to her next."

In the special, Maria and Sarah Jane are brought together in their battle against the scheming Ms Wormwood, played by Samantha Bond.

Filming begins next month on location in Wales, with the series going into production in spring 2007.

Creative Director of CBBC, Anne Gilchrist, says: "CBBC viewers have already proved themselves to be enormous fans of Dr Who. I am thrilled that they'll now have this new series as an extra-special treat."

Sarah Jane Smith was a companion to the third and fourth Doctors, Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, and was a regular in the series from 1973 to 1976.

She made a recent return in the 2006 episode School Reunion opposite David Tennant, the tenth Doctor.

Russell T Davies' hugely successful Doctor Who has a Christmas Special due this year, with a third series broadcast in Spring 2007.

The hotly-anticipated Torchwood, following the adventures of Captain Jack, begins this autumn on BBC THREE.

The Sarah Jane Adventures is written by Russell T Davies and Gareth Roberts. It was commissioned by Jane Tranter for BBC Drama, and Anne Gilchrist and Jon East for CBBC. It is produced by BBC Wales and will transmit on the CBBC Channel and CBBC on BBC ONE.

The Executive Producers are Julie Gardner and Russell T Davies. The Producer of the special is Susie Liggat and the Director is Colin Teague. The Producer of the series is Matthew Bouch and the Series Producer is Phil Collinson"

Notes to Editors

K-9, the faithful robot dog and Sarah Jane's goodbye present from The Doctor, makes an appearance in the special but will not appear in the series.

What is the use in having a Sarah Jane series if K9 doesn't appear?

I am still quite looking forward to this, RTD was responsible for some of the best "childrens" tv shows of recent years.

Yes, just what we need - another spin off. While Torchwood is limited in its links to Doctor Who, now we have a series with arguably the most popular companion. Add to that K9 Adventures (while it's not an official spin-off, it's going to be seen as such to the general public) and I'm concerned then the nation is going to get sick of Doctor Who and its ilk being on the air.

I'm not as concerned by the quality of the series, as since we are looking at 3 different types of shows I'm sure there's enough scope for originality (unlike later Trek series) :)

Not needed I'm afraid, I felt we left Sarah Jane in good terms in School Reunion.

No K9???? Does this spell the end for our little K9 companion.... :tear:

Russell, please, please, please...stop now.

Sop are we to believe that this AND Rose Tyler: Earth Defence AND Torchwood were all being planned at the same time, my gosh Russell is ploughing into this franchise.

STOP, if anything I blame the fact that we only have a 13 episode run of Doctor Who. Stop with all of these spin-offs and increase the episodes in a series of Doctor Who. 22 episodes would be welcomed by us and probably Sci-fi as well as over in America that is about the standard amount of episodes for a season/series.

Instead of trying to capitilise on Who's success with spin-offs, Torchwood fine, this I'm slightly concerned about (especially with no K9 after first ep) and Rose Tyler: Earth Defence was rightly canned....I vote for a longer series, only problem is Tennant probably doesn't, but hey when he leaves find an unknown, remember Tom Baker was not well known before, and make sure they do.

No K9? :(

Why?

He'll be in the first episode but after that no.....

I think maybe because of the Jetix K9 series, and they probably don't want two K9 shows out there?

Or maybe because its just too hard and expensive to w**k with a machine like that on a day to day basis, and even in School Reunion K9 did look funny.

OR

Maybe they are trying to make it a bit more edgy, K9 can get you out of alot of situations easily...so make it harder, whereby they don't want it to end with K9 as shooty dog thing.

OR

They just want a bond between Sarah Jane and the kid in it.

Who knows? I doubt he'll not make an appearance again.
