:)
Good, solid episode this one.
Nice to see Data put in a situation whereby he has to try and convince a semi hostile bunch of humans to do something they clearly won't/don't want to, although the reasons behind it were all a bit contrived :ponder:
Had a bit of a laugh at the token black man being a respected semi leader type. Can't remember there being any other coloured people from the colony despite the fact there would presumably be quite a lot of them, with a lot of inbreeding between the colonists
Sort of liked the Sheliak even though it was blatantly just a bloke who got stuck in his duvet :lmao:

There were at least two more black people: in the crowd scene, a mother and her child
I'm never quite sure about this one. I like Data having this dilemma, but the colonists are such cliched characters that it doesn't really w**k. The set is pretty poor and confining, which somehow detracts from proceedings although I can't quite describe how :ponder:
Also, Goshevan's voice seems to have been overdubbed the whole way through. It's like it's not the actor's voice, and it comes across as very wooden and distracting to me.
And the supposedly intelligent woman falling for an android... Do me a favour
Love the look on Data's face when Picard walks out on the recital at the beginning
The best bit, for me, is Picard's little stroll around the bridge when the Sheliak are trying to get back in touch with him. Lovely moment that's always cracked me up from the first time I saw it, especially when he checks the plaque for dust, and the smug grin on Riker's face in the background
Could have done without the final scene, where Picard teaches Data today's lesson
Steadily builds on the season's first episode. Has its moments, but as Steve points out, there are more than a few flaws as well.
To say that some of the colonists are cliched is a vast understatement. Goshevan and Ard'rian were awfully stereotyped. The smalltown politician who knows best and resists common sense, and the pretty lady with the interest in cybernetics who just happens to fall for Data. C'mon.....
An interesting point you make about Goshevan Steve. A quick check reveals the following...

| Unhappy with his part in this episode, Grainger Hines (Gosheven) requested that his name be removed from the on-screen credits; and all of his lines had to be re-dubbed by another actor. |
You can see why he'd be unhappy.
A few more points;
Goshevan calls a town meeting to discuss Data's 'news'. There are supposedly 15,000 colonists, yet only a handful of people turn up to discuss this potentially life-altering situation.
To be fair, its not all bad. The opening scenes with Data, Picard and the recital are very good, and Picard himself has a fairly amusing couple of scenes with the Sheliak.
Again, much better than previous seasons, and although there are faults, it's not actually bad.
