 Okay, who had the bright idea to open the season with a Crusher child story <_<

Actually, I really like this one. You can see the step up in quality immediately. The show looks and feels different, and it's not just because of the new uniforms (yay for The Picard Maneouvre   ). There's a confidence about it that just makes everything seem right.

Given everything that happens I'm not so sure that Picard would allow Data to take the risk that he does at the end - surely the computer could have vocalised the nanites thoughts just as easily

Amusing to see old Doctor Whathisface, too, not looking that much different or having too different a demeanor. I kept expecting JD to turn up and make a fool of himself

And welcome back Bev, we've missed you!

Love her conversation with Picard about Wesley, and with Guinan at the end

Can't quite make my mind up about this one

Yep it's a lot better than many of the latter S2 eps, and the story is fairly interesting and well executed but for all that I can't really get excited by it. Probably a case of familiarity breeding contempt as I know before watching exactly what's happening, so there's no sense of mystery as things start to go wrong :ponder:

Plus, what is going on with the Crusher boys hair

Not sure what to make of this one. It all feels and looks a lot more professional than S1 and S2 which is a good thing. sk

Steve's absolutely right. The step up in quality is obvious from this first episode. The new uniforms, the darker lighting, strong and confident performances, it all starts to click.

The story itself, is nothing special. To be fair, the story itself probably isn't much better than a lot of the stuff that was produced across the first two seasons, but the execution is far better. It's the production values around the story that elevate it, and which gives real belief that things are going to be much better this season.

Bev's reintroduction was well handled, although Pulaski's exit wasn't even mentioned, unless I missed it. She won't be missed!

Re: Steve's point about Picard allowing Data to house and speak for the Nanites rather than letting the ship's computer perform the same funtion; part of Data's argument was that such an act would constitute an act of good faith, and would possibly ilicit trust from the Nanites. The Nanites pretty much already had control over the ship's computer, hence it wouldn't have ilicited the same response, possibly.

Good start to the season though. A fairly low-key story, especially by later seasons' standards, but well executed.
