Title: Quark's

willowroolz - August 11, 2006 07:35 AM (GMT)
This is probably a stupid question, because there may be an answer for it that I don't know, but why the need for Quark's bar? I understand that, dramatically, it serves a purpose, but with all the replicators around why would anyone feel the need to go into a bar and pay for drink and food? There's a Replomat a few yards down the Promenade after all

Same thing's always bugged me about Ten Forward

I understand the need for a social venue etc, but why the need for a barman? Especially a conniving little troll who takes money from you for things you don't even need to pay for

Help me out here, please!

Have we ever seen anyone actually paying for a drink?

I expect Quark makes his money from all the other stuff, like Dabo and those "special" holo progs :naughty:

Like you said the main purpose of both Quark's and Ten Forward is as a central focus for social interaction.

Not sure  But then why the need for a barman? Why the bottles behind the bar? If people can ask a barman for a drink they might as well go straight to the replicator

Edit: But then why on earth would a Ferengi give out free drinks? There's no profit in that

Because Quark is a people person and more pleasant to deal with than a hole in the wall :snooty:

Okayyy <_<

1) The aforementioned social interraction.

2) Mmmm, scantily clad Dabo girls

3) Dabo!

4) Holo suites.

5) The replimat is only free to Federation/Station staff others still have to pay. (I assume  ).

6) Quark is a 'host' and it's his job to provide a welcoming establishment and to make sure his guests feel comfortable. You don't get this if you could just lean over and serve yourself.

7) Serving staff. There's nowt like a bit of pampering and fawning over to make your day better.

Plus what I said in my PM :snooty:

In conclusion we're right and you're not :ph43r: :p

Er, David, it was never a case of right or wrong, I was just asking the question, and I noted the social interaction in my original post, all you two have done is repeat it :p

Thank you, that's a very good point and the reason that makes the most sense :)

You should've said that in the first place :p  :ph43r:

I've just realised that that's almost exactly the same as...

...which I didn't accept :lmao:

I'm not having a good day, too bloody tired

It's all so much easier when you realise that everything I say is right and makes perfect sense

I'd guess the social interraction bit would be the main reason

Coupled with what you said about Quark, yes, it makes perfect sense :)

I'm going to keep my eyes open to see if anyone pays for a drink now :lmao:

The existance of the Bar is pretty much explained in the first episode. With the number of civilians on the station then they need a focul point of community. What better place than a bar?

As to why the need for a barman, Quark's without a barman would surely be as mundane as the replimat featured in a few episodes down the way. It's easier to think of Quark as a 'manager' rather than a 'barman'. Who else would co-ordinate everything? The bar, the holosuites, the gaming tables etc etc.

Plus, it's already been established in many episodes of Star Trek that whilst replicated food is good enough to consume it's not as good as the real thing. Presumably drink would be exactly the same.

Cool, thanks James :)

Makes me wonder, though. In The Neutral Zone Sonny tells Data that the replicator has made the best <<insert whatever drink he had, I can't remember>> he ever had - obviously Cardassian replicators aren't a patch on those on the Enterprise

Didn't take me long to find out about the paying for drinks at Quark's - very next ep I watched (Armageddon Game) he tells Kira and Dax "These are on the house" and mentions that Bashir and O'Brien always paid their bills on time

Yes, but I bet you anything Starfleet officers have a special replicator account to replicate whatever money they need. Just like their own never-ending little cashpoint :)

Or, to be fair, Sonny hadn't actually had a drink in a couple of hundred years......

Any idea where I can get one of those?
