Title: Dawn
John Brawn - July 28, 2006 02:59 PM (GMT)
We had a poll a while ago about whether or not to change Dawn's name but we have not had one about Dawn herself. sk

get out get out GET OUT
so maybe apart in a very few episode of season seven, she was an annoying teen sister (dawn is in trouble, must be tuesday) <_<

My personal feeling is that Dawn in S5 was absolute genius being the ultimate alienated teenager who really doesn't belong rather than just feeling that way. sk

Unlike many of you I think Dawn is great! Buffy needed a reason to keep fighting and after Joyce died she had to have someone to take care of and to love.
As for Dawn's whine at times it gets on my nerves at times to but I can see it from her point of view she is frustrated because she left out and she wants to be a bigger part of Buffy's life. Dawn felt like she had to sit on the side lines and watch rather then take part maybe thats why I identifty with so much?
As Claire said in season 7 she had grown up a lot if there had been an 8th season Dawn would become she own person. That was one the most disappointing things about season 7 I thought we would see her become a scooby but instead Buffy had to spent time with the Potentials.
I think she is sweet, loyal and doesn't back down!
prophecy girl - July 28, 2006 06:34 PM (GMT)
in season seven, dawn seemed to understood that buffy needed to lead the potential but she was also a little annoyed that buffy didn't train her anymore (even if after a whole summer training, she had a very long way to go before being good at slaying..... see lessons ............ well like any of the scoobies ................ just that none of the scoobies actually ever asked buffy to teach them how to fight before) :ponder:

I second that. The writers really managed to create the sense of not belonging and make a brilliant big bad (ok mediocre big bad), which ultimatately led to one of the best season finale's.
Not a Dawn fan though. :snooty:

Dawn- not big and not clever..the character was created to be a liability and is. Should have been end of story, but outstays her welcome. becomes increasingly implausible, hence even more annoying for reasons other than the original characterisation.
Have only ever heard 2 half-reasonable excuses for her existance: to appeal to younger viewers now the original scoobies were getting so growed-up. So a commerical tactic rather than organic narrative development. And for me, it shows.
And to give Buffy something to live for after Joyce died. Crass, and I mostly know the writing is better than that. If life tosses you a cruel bereavement, it doesn't tend to add a bonus sibling (however ghastly) as compensation. And the series' allegories are usually completely truthful, however bizarre, so cant imagine why they 'd think we'd buy it.
Buffy should have died in s 5 FAILING to save her.

I have to agree with you that never made any sense to me come to think of Dawn was probably one of best people best placed to help train the Potentials. I mean she had spent years watching Buffy train so new most moves and up untill "Chosen" she would had more skills then any Potentials who had just few weeks to learn. Intead that job went to Kennedy purely because of relationship with Willow. <_< I think the two reason why this didn't happen 1) Buffy was training so she would make through Sunnydale not to lead into battle to save the world. Losing Dawn was the thing she feared most and she promised Joyce she would keep her safe. 2) The writers just wanted Dawn to be "normal" like Xander one the strenth of Buffy was not every one had great powers or skills they just wanted to help because it was the right thing to do.

I agree with some of that Joe. I do think S7 couldhave been less potential related but S5 was a Dawn focused season and too much of one character would have put some people off. S2 and 3 were very Angel focused and I know alot of fans that didn't like that (are they crazy?).
I think Dawns role was to play the whiny sister who could never live up to her sisters standards set, she played a side charactor very well but I don't think the charactor had that much scope to be the main or even quite important person of an eight season.

Also Dawn - bonus, consider instead they threw Dawn in to make Buffy's life even harder. :lmao:
Truthfully I think the Buffyverse would have been better without her.

I reckon the writers should have had Dawn kidnap Andrew and elope with him at the start of S7....... :ponder: Then Buffy could have sent the majority of the potentials off to look for them...... :shifty: Thus removing most of the annoying characters in one go :yahoo:

Nope- meant what I said.
I have no problems with The Gift except Dawn's survival- Buffy's death and return opened up so much scope for the interesting things of series six. Coming back to life realising she'd failed to save little sis would have been so much more challenging in less obvious ways, I think. B)

She was bloody well awful and should never have been written!
I half considered not bothering with the show when she started becoming more and more annoying. Certainly tested my patience! At least the other characters were growing and still interesting to keep things going.
In short, she should be shot :)

My point was that Riley suffered in my estimation either due to the actor or poor writing affecting that actor's performance. If he wasn't a "smart guy" it was a limitation set by the writers, not by the nature of the character.
I suspect anyone who's looking for perfection in someone else will end up being disappointed in the long run, anyway
