J. Michael Straczynski announced a new Babylon 5 project. It's called Babylon 5: The Lost Tales. It will be a direct to dvd collection of 20 minutes stories set in the b5 universe that will feature the prominent characters. These stories will expand on the characters that were previously established. The only character he mentioned would not be covered would be G'Kar since he believes no one should ever voice G'Kar except for Andreas Katsulas, who passed away earlier this year. Warner Bros has greenlit the project and he says production starts this September, hoping for a DVD release in the second quarter of next year.

As many of you may already know, a few days ago as I write this, I canceled all of my convention appearances through February of next year due to the press of w**k, both in terms of finishing up w**k on my script for Ron Howard, and in order to free up room to begin the process of writing, producing, and directing the first in what we hope will be a series of new Babylon 5 anthology episodes for DVD. The other result of this is that we are going to push back volume nine just far enough to make room for me to get these projects up and on the rails. It will not be much of a delay, it will be a September release, but the Babylon 5 scripts team and I wanted to make sure everyone knew about the delay, and that it is only a delay. The good thing is that the delay is caused primarily by the creation of new Babylon 5 episodes, to be produced with the original cast, which is a cause for celebration on every level imaginable. We hope to follow up this with another announcement with the September publication date for volume nine as quickly as possible, so stay tuned, for as they say in the television business...there is more to come.

Dreamwatch: Have you had any talks about the project with the actors? JMS: We've just started talks this week. Which actors are in the first three episodes will depend on availability and other factors. Ideally, I'd like to rotate through the whole cast, preferably in a thematic fashion. One episode would concern itself with issues of command, and thus feature Sheridan, Lochley and Garibaldi; another would concern the Psi Corps, and we'd have Lyta, Bester, and someone else; another would be a strong Minbari theme, so we would have Delenn, Lennier and Sheridan (in his role as head of the Interstellar Alliance); a Centauri sequence with Londo, Via and someone else; and we'd mix it up a bit. Dreamwatch: Do you plan to adopt one common storytelling format for the 30-minute tales? JMS: The first one is set to pick up in real-time after the events of [penultimate episode] Objects at Rest. But the others may move forward or backward in time. This would also give us the ability to do a Sinclair or a Marcus story.

We had to push shooting to mid-November in order to accommodate availabilities of different people, because this had all come up in kind of short notice...but we'll be in the new stages by the end of October, and a few key members of the crew have already been hired. So we're good to go. jms

Title: Further B5:TLT update from jms Author: jmsatb5@aol.com Date: 12 Oct 2006 01:02:13 -0700 Message-ID: <1160640133.806575.268920@h48g2000cwc.googlegroups.com> Just a quick follow-up...I'm in Vancouver (coming back in 24 hours) finishing up a round of final staff interviews for B5:TLT. Thus far, we've hired two other producers, a script supervisor, a post supervisor, the editor, a production manager, a conceptual artist/storyboard guy, an art director/production designer, a first assistant director, and closed several cast deals, with the rest probably to be closed next week, at which time I may be able to say who they are. Pending final negotiations, Chris Franke has agreed to come on board to do the music. We're interviewing CGI houses up here to decide which to go with. The three scripts have been completed, and are now being storyboarded. We've narrowed down the director of photography options to just a few last guys, and should have that decided by week's end. We've also locked down the stage and have started putting together our package (camera, lights, grip and electrics). By this time next week, about 80% of our crew will be in hand, the rest coming aboard during the start of prep. jms message content © 2006 synthetic worlds, ltd. permission to reprint specifically denied to SFX Magazine

An internet user has been found guilty of what police said was Britain's first "web-rage" attack. Paul Gibbons, 47, tracked down John Jones using details obtained online after the pair exchanged insults in an internet chatroom, a court heard. He travelled 70 miles to Mr Jones' home in Clacton, Essex, and beat him up with a pickaxe handle in December 2005. Gibbons, of Southwark, south London, admitted unlawful wounding and will be sentenced on 7 November. Threatening exchanges The pair met in an internet chatroom called Yahoo, Islam 10 as both had an interest in the Muslim faith, the Old Bailey was told. Their exchanges soured after Gibbons accused Mr Jones of spreading rumours about him. This is the first instance of a web-rage attack Det Cons Christopher Creagh "There was an exchange of views between the victim and the defendant which were threatening on both sides," said prosecutor Ibitayo Adebayo. Gibbons, a man with a violent past, traced Mr Jones to his home using personal details about himself that he had put online. Cut with a knife Gibbons arrived at Mr Jones' home armed and accompanied by another man carrying a machete, the court heard. Mr Jones, whose partner and three children were in the house, opened the door holding a knife for protection, said Mr Adebayo. A fight broke out during which Mr Jones was disarmed and beaten with the pickaxe handle and cut with the knife. Gibbons fled after the victim's partner called for help. Mr Jones suffered cuts to his head, neck and hands.

223 From: jmsa...@aol.com - view profile Date: Thurs, Oct 26 2006 4:01 am Email: jmsa...@aol.com Groups: rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5.moderated Well, tomorrow I head back to LA for meetings on other projects for two days, then it's back to Vancouver again on Sunday to continue prep. So far everything's laying out very cleanly. We have an EFX house on board now, which was the last big step to be undertaken. It wasn't until the last day or so that we could really get into the CGI issues, which are huge on these stories. And in regard to that...the initial goal was to try and do three big stories in one DVD. So I wrote three scripts, featuring Sheridan, Lochley, Galen and Garibaldi. (I wanted to focus on the human characters initially so we'd have more time for prosthetics R&D for the next one.) The stories, as noted previously, were huge...all over the map, from Minbar, to Earth, Mars, the future, the distant past, as well as B5 itself obviously. We're also going to be trying some new production technologies, again trying to stay ahead of the tech curve, the way B5 has always stayed ahead on these things. And over the last few days, as we began to bring on crew and lay out the production, looking at just how complicated these mini-movies were going to be, the idea of making three of these monsters began to become a bit much for us to pull off on out first time out the gate, especially since I'm still kind of new as a director. So we decided to postpone one of the three to the next DVD, and lengthen the other two to make up the difference. Given that the Garibaldi story was the most complicated visually and technically, also the most difficult from a CGi perspective, that's the one that got pushed until, potentially, next time. And if the sales are anywhere near what WB expects, and I think they will be, there's no question that there will be more of these down the road. So we're gong to focus in on those two stories and knock them out of the park. Same length, same running time, and now even bigger than at first anticipated since the budget on number three will now be applied to the other two. Part of what we're doing is to re-think the look of B5 to some degree. The show was created using 1993 technology, video toasters and amigas, and was to some extent limited by the paradigms and production methods we used in that. But it's now 13 years later, and while I will keep the feel of the show the same, and the silhouettes and designs, there's no reason to limit the look of the feel to what we could do six years ago (from when we stopped). So we're going to invest a lot of time, effort and money into really re-imagining some of the visuals at the present level -- looking at shows like Battlestar and the like -- and bringing those tools into B5 while still maintaining the feel of the show. I also managed to work in a nice nod to Andreas and Richard in the two mini-movies. So with that...the team is now in place, the last personnel have been hired, and as soon as I get back to Vancouver, I get to take off the producer's hat and put on the director's hat. jms message content © 2006 synthetic worlds, ltd. permission to reprint specifically denied to SFX Magazine
