Title: 1.14 Jeremiah Crichton

willowroolz - July 5, 2004 10:08 PM (GMT)
Frustrated by his inability to make the rest of the crew understand his ways, Crichton decides to take some "alone time" in the Farscape module. At the same time Moya inadvertently starbursts, leaving Crichton stranded...

I think the most important question about this episode is Why, if he had time to grow a beard, did John's hair not grow at all? I mean, did he have his hair trimmed? Is he a mutant who's hair just grows extra slowly?

Anyway, I love the beginning of this epsiode (the rest is a bit poor ;) ) what with John having a tantrum and flouncing off to have some 'alone time'. I guess it was about time for him to have a bit of a reaction to all that has happened to him, the others are always telling him how useless and stupid he is and a guy can only take so much.......

"I'm sick of this whole turd-burp end of the universe" hilarious!!

And then the look of horror and disbelief on his face as Moya starbursts away!!! It's no wonder he didn't welcome D'Argo and Rygel with open arms!!!

Ok, the plot has been done to death in more shows that I can name, and they haven't really done anything special with it here so I don't think I really have anything else to say. I'm not really very good at these discussion thingies.

What's up? You're doing fine!

As for his beard, OMG they could have done a better job with that!

melian - July 8, 2004 03:45 PM (GMT)
He has a lot better one later in the series :D

willowroolz - July 10, 2004 10:56 AM (GMT)
This episode is pants, pants, pants!! I almost can't be bothered to think of anything else to say about it.

Okay, the teaser is pretty good, and it's nice to see Crichton completely losing his cool. It shows how far the crew have come that they are willing to spend 3 months searching for him. How bad was what he said to Aeryn? :o

I can only assume that Anthony Simcoe had a cold when they were making this, cos his voice sounds different to usual.

The lost tribe story is so old and boring. Throwing in the old "one of the crew gets mistaken for a god" twist is so horribly predictable that even some of the amusement of Rygel's situation can't save it.

To top it all off all of the guest actors - and I mean all of them - are dreadful.

Every show has it's fair share of duff episodes. This is one of Farscape's prime candidates. The good news is that things are about to pick up quite dramatically.

But I'm going to finish with another mention for...

... that BEARD!!! :fear:

Persephone - July 10, 2004 06:57 PM (GMT)
Not the best episode, granted.

Agree with the beard v hair growth

The whole plot was obvious, as soon as Rygel hid in the bag, I just knew he was pivotal for later events. Ditto the rock formation, please.

Interesting how on this planet, the women are the agressors in everything romantic ;)

Why would they all be searching for John again, granted no series without him, but I thought it was a bit early on, to test that particular loyalty. The last few episodes, have had the rest of the crew proving, that they would all stop at nothing to get home, so wasting 3 months searching for Crichton, just doesn't seem right somehow ;)

That's very true ;)

Knowing what happens next, I'll bet they wish they'd left him there!

:o Someone just voted for this as one of their favourite episodes on another board?

Is there something I'm missing.

No I don't think so. Its not an original story and would be better placed in The Lost World or something.

The guest stars are awful as you have mentioned, so wooden which is unusual for Farscape. The best thing about the episode is Rygels ascent at the end but thats it.

I think budget must have played a big part in this one as in lack of, it just seems like a rushed together story, a filler. Never mind they have made up for it a million times over but I would hate for someone to see this an form an opinion of Farscape based on it. Perhaps they should leave it out on re runs now to stop that happening :whistling:

Well, it takes all types I s'pose. But they're wrong in so many ways.

star_fury - November 29, 2004 04:17 PM (GMT)
I don't mind this episode. I liked the idea of the beard because it gives you a sense of time to how long he's been missing. You know that's a good point about his hair, which I never considered!

Probably the reason I like this episode is the fact that they have spent three months looking for Crichton, showing their change of feelings towards him...especially d'argo(sp?) Obviously it was just filler episode but the character development is what I like best. I liked how John felt more or less at home there and reluctant to leave. I know there is nothing to shout about in this episode but it isn't that bad, in my humble opinion anyway.

I'll tell you one thing though I wouldn't be sleeping that close to the water near those great big crustacean type things, that would have well and truly give me the creeps!

Yeah, fair point, hadn't thought of that.

I think it's an episode that I find more acceptable in retrospect than at the time, although overall I do think it's one of the series' weakest episodes. :)

Are you doing a rewatch having bought the dvds, star_fury, or is this your first time through?

this is a re-watch on DVD. :D This is actually my third viewing of the first season but the first time on DVD. So far I'm extremely impressed with the sound mix being 5.1 unlike other shows like Buffy, Angel and the X-Files which are bog-standard stereo. :(

Currently I have season 1 and 2 which are both complete season box-sets and hopefully I'll pick up season three boxset on offer soon!

You're probably right about it being better in retrospect as some of the earlier episodes on my first viewing werent too appealing and quite possibly this could have been one of them?

willowroolz - November 29, 2004 04:56 PM (GMT)
Yes, the 5.1 sound is quite impressive on a lot of the episodes, especially as the series goes on

Some of the earlier episodes actually put me off originally, but now, after more viewings and in context with the rest of the series, I see a lot more in them. :)

Welcome aboard the rewatch, btw. ;)

for a TV show it's very impressive sound! I was very impressed with the sound on "premier" then the quality as you said does vary from episode to episode but generally so far I have been very impressed.

Thank you for your welcome aboard the rewatch :)

I don't think some the earlier episodes actually put me off originally but they didn't engross me enough to call myself a fan until a Bug's Life

laughitupfuzzball - November 29, 2004 05:04 PM (GMT)
 Yes the sound is great, wait til you see Nerve and Hidden Memory again its great.

I can't add any more about this episode though as I really don't like it, you may have gathered :)

Crichton Kicks - January 11, 2005 06:43 PM (GMT)
I can see why many people don't particularly care for this one much. Myself, I have a soft spot for a planet-bound episode every once in a while ;)

It started well, as many have said, the teaser was great, but the story itself could have been ripped from any other Star Trek episode IMO. In fact, the distinct impression I got was this would have made a great episode of TNG season 1

It's not terrible, but a long way distant of some of the Farscape that I've seen so far.

Also, marks deducted for jumping on the bandwagon of having people who follow a religion portrayed as blind simpletons

I'm not religious in any way, shape or form, but it annoys me to see people stereotyped, and the impression you get with Sci-Fi (most sci-fi, not just Farscape) is that people who have some form of religious belief just don't 'get it'

willowroolz - January 11, 2005 08:10 PM (GMT)
I couldn't agree more, although I think, for the most part, it's a rarity in Farscape, especially seeing as one of its main characters is a priestess.

And don't forget the beard. THE BEARD!!!! :fear:

The beard didn't really freak me out too much, as I'm one of the few people who saw Crichton Kicks before Jeremiah Crichton

The beard in Crichton kicks was real though and the one in Jeremiah clearly not.

Good point, it does happen all to often on sci-fi and it is probably the most irritating aspect of this episode too.

Just a bit curious as to what the hell the gloop was on his face as he shaved. Looked revolting
