Title: Internet Problems
kicking it old school - June 24, 2006 04:33 PM (GMT)
Right.. I have a new computer problem now  Basically, I can't get onto the internet (using brother's computer for this). It says it's connected, but whenever I open up a browser it goes to page can't be found. It also won't connect to, for example, search for updates for spybot.
I phoned up Wanadoo, who were very helpful and nice, but couldn't w**k it out. Their hardware/software is w**king, because when I did a configuration check thingy it said I was connected to the internet. So he told me to phone up Microsoft and ask them what to do, because it must be a problem with Windows. But they're closed til Monday <_<
I thought it might be something to do with Zonealarm, as the internet stopped w**king soon after it updated, but I uninstalled it and the problem didn't go away. Also, my computer isn't the only one connected to this internet, my mum's is the main one and mine is connected wirelessly, and the internet isn't w**king on hers either
So if anyone here has any suggestions... :) It's probably something really obvious, but I'm very dense when it comes to these things.

Erm, no idea - but if I have a problem, I run spybot and ad-aware, then McAfee, defrag, then scandisk - the PC restarts at the end, too, which sometimes fixes things.
It doesn`t sound like that would w**k, though, if your Mum`s PC isn`t w**king either. <_<
What about system restore ?
^^ I`d ignore all this until a more techie-type person replies. :ph43r:

I did all that (that's as far as my computer know-how goes ) but it didn't make any difference.
Thanks for the link... :) not really sure if it could be zonealarm though, as my mum's computer doesn't have it, so why would hers be not w**king as well?
Anyway, must go, my brother is impatiently tapping his fingers, desperate to get back to his proevolution soccer game...

According to
THIS, after uninstalling zonealarm, there could still be zonealarm-type files left on your PC.

I used Zonealarm for years but I had to take it off my pc after one of it's updates crashed it. It worked after I uninstalled though :ermm:
By the sound of it I'd check if there were any files left?

Have you just started using the wireless router Ria? :ponder:
I had a bit of trouble with my router when I started using it. It took ages to connect to the internet then wouldn't stay connected. And when I tried to connect to the internet through my cable modem instead of the router it didn't w**k. I reinstalled my router (and moved it away from my tv aerial because I think that was interfering with it  ) and it's w**king fine now.
Don't know if this is much help (or even if it makes sense  ), but could it be something to do with your router? Or maybe because you're using a new computer with it?

Thanks all :) I'll try the thing with Zonealarm, hopefully that'll fix it. But what I don't understand is, if that was the problem, why would it have affected my mum's computer too? I'm so confused!
Paula - I've had it about 3 months and haven't had any problems at all until this. And wanadoo said it definitely wasn't a problem with them.

Firewalls and routers are funny things.
I know someone who had problems and was accessing the internet even though he wasn`t connected to it - one of his neighbours had a router and an inadequate firewall. Or something.

Yay! Ok, it's w**king again. The Zonealarm thing didn't w**k, but I tried fiddling round with my mum's computer, and did a system restore on hers (had only tried it on this one before) and it fixed it. :yahoo:
Thanks for the suggestions

Yeah, it's great
I just hadn't thought to do it on my mum's computer as well, as only my computer was on when the internet stopped w**king, so I thought it must be a problem with mine. Guess not..
