Title: Season 7
Phillip Culley - May 2, 2004 08:12 PM (GMT)
Been slowly watching this season - saw 'Avenger 2.0' today which was bloody brilliant :)
Thank God this seasons getting better - after the fairly poor first 7 episodes I was beginning to worry the series had lost it :(
Crichton Kicks - May 2, 2004 08:26 PM (GMT)
Season 7 was an oddity.
The first half year was pretty average, perhaps even worse than that. The second half IMO was one of the best half seasons of SG1 that I've seen, culminating in a fabulous 2 hour finale.
Oddly, I haven't yet watched Avenger 2.0 :(
Time to dig out those CDs :) And don't forget Jolene's guest slot a few episodes down the line, and then there's Bob Picardo as well :)
Vic's started watching Enterprise S3 today btw. She came down last night while I was watching THE FORGOTTEN and she enjoyed it so she's been ploughing through the rest of the season all day, started with 3x01 this morning and she's currently watching 3x14 downstairs :) See ?? It's winning people over this third season :)
Phillip Culley - May 2, 2004 08:34 PM (GMT)
Well, I got Volume 7.4 (technically) yesterday, so I've got a few to get though yet - I'm just annoyed that 7.6 will come out a few days after I leave the country on holiday!
At least I've downloaded Lost City, so I can take them up so Krystal and I can watch them together (she's making do with downloaded copies since I don't think they've finished S6 in Canada yet! :o
According to the back of the box JB's in the next episode, and then I've got the first 2-parter :) And you've not watched Aventer 2.0? It's wonderful fun - several groan moments (such as just before the final scene), but they're tolerable :)
Ah... new converts to S3 :) What will you do when she wants to wath the rest of the seasons though :P
Crichton Kicks - May 2, 2004 08:43 PM (GMT)
Aha, I've already seen to that eventuality :)
Luckily I intended reviewing the first two seasons myself over the summer. As such I've already d/l season 2 in it's entirety, and most of season 1. She's already seen the first couple of seasons in the main anyway, she saw them on C4 when they aired.
The positive thing though is that she's been very positive of season 3, it would appear that it's not just us :)
LOST CITY is a fantastic 2-parter, and for my money so was the mid season EVOLUTION. I'll have to dig AVENGER 2.0 out sometime tomorrow if I can :)

And to make things even better, I've got the whole week off

Oops - I think someone will get confused since I unwittingly hit the 'mother' button :)
I meant to say that of the 11 hours I have they are filled with exams :)
Crichton Kicks - May 2, 2004 09:18 PM (GMT)
LOL
If only I could be bothered to hack the Beeb board. I'd change the "Complain about post" link to "run to mother Carl" instead :)

Yeah but he'd be complaining TO me ABOUT me :)
I think I know which way the judgement would go on that one. Get lost Carl ;)
Phillip Culley - May 4, 2004 10:59 PM (GMT)
Going back on topic :D
Watched Evolution:1 today - this season has suddenly got a lot better!
Crichton Kicks - May 5, 2004 12:24 AM (GMT)
EVOLUTION was the turning point for me as well this season.
Those Super soldiers are badass !!!
There's a moment in Part 2 that really would put the fear of God into you if it were you in the same situation. Remind me when you've seen Part 2 and we'll see if you agree :)
Phillip Culley - May 5, 2004 11:53 AM (GMT)
Well, I've seen part 2, and that part I think you're talking about is about 30-35 minutes into it - convenient everyone else the Megawarrior meets is slaughtered, except Carter, Teal'c, Jacob and Bra'tac :)
Crichton Kicks - May 5, 2004 12:02 PM (GMT)
Yeah, that's the scene. The one aboard the scout ship. Up until that point it had slaughtered everything in it's path and suddenly it's there, right next to them in a confined space. Freaky !! :)
Phillip Culley - May 6, 2004 07:34 PM (GMT)
'Grace' today, and it felt too much like Star Trek SG-1 (which isn't always a bad thing - I loved last season's Memento).
Sadly it didn't live up to the previous few episodes, but then again it would be rather hard to :)
Crichton Kicks - May 6, 2004 10:42 PM (GMT)
I remember at the time of watching I was thinking "They're outTrekking Trek" :)
Started well but I actually fell asleep during the second half the first time around. Never a good sign :(
Phillip Culley - May 7, 2004 06:37 PM (GMT)
So the Quinn finally came back - albeit with a hairdo that's just wrong (although I'm one to talk :))
I liked 'Fallout' (even if they borrowed liberally from Tunderbirds with their Mole - er - drilling machine.
And the quote of the day has to be:
'That's what you get for dicking around!'

The reviewers didn't seem to have that much praise for FALLOUT, and as for Corin Nemec coming up with the plot, hello ?? What was this, after he'd just been to see THE CORE at the cinema perchance ?? ;)
I like Jonas, as such I found it quite easy to like this episode, despite it's obvious flaws. I just hope he comes back again at some point. Just why the hell they didn't have him on Atlantis is beyond me I must admit.
The hairdo, well, different, shall we say ?? :)

And from what I saw the reviewers loved Grace, which says everything :)
It would have been nice to have had Jonas on Atlantis, then again the problem you would have is how they could get him off Kelowna :)
Crichton Kicks - May 7, 2004 07:43 PM (GMT)
They're creative writers, I'm sure they'd have found a way :)
Fallout, definitely better than Grace, but I guess the opening FX battle won them over, how fickle ;)
Phillip Culley - May 8, 2004 06:02 PM (GMT)
Today was the 26th title Stargate shared with Trek (yes, I counted - a few 'The's' aside) - 'Chimera'.
And I loved it - not sure about the Sam storyline - while it's nice she finally got a boyfriend who's still alive, I think I'd have preferred him not to find out about the SGC in his first episode!
Osiris was a welcome return, presumably forgotten during S6 as there just wouldn't be the link between her and Jonas that she had with Daniel. Shame about the end of her story - after Jonas' girlfriend last episode and now Sarah, we're getting too much of the 'Goa'uld magically changed back to normal by the end of the episode' syndrome.
Crichton Kicks - May 8, 2004 06:05 PM (GMT)
I liked Chimera as well, but then, again, I'm a fan of the Sarah/Osiris arc.
The Star Trek one, DS9 ?? An Ezri story ??
Personally I think they could do with finishing with the Goauld after the Anubis arc wraps. There are still plenty of more races to have a look at, and they should really bring back the Replicators. 8x01, woohoo !!!

'Chimera' was the S7 episode with Laas :)

Ah, it is the one I'm thinking of though. The only thing I really remember about the episode offhand is Ezri with that great big Phaser rifle.
Phillip Culley - May 8, 2004 09:41 PM (GMT)
No - you're getting confused here (shame on you :))
Ezri with the big gun is 'Field of Fire' (with the Vulcan killing happy people), 'Chimera' was the following episode, when Laas found Odo.
Check video 7.7 - you'll see I'm right :)
Phillip Culley - May 8, 2004 09:43 PM (GMT)
And going back to the Stargate episode, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the elevator scene, with that tune being hummed :)
Crichton Kicks - May 8, 2004 09:46 PM (GMT)
Damn. You're right. You know what it is don't you ?? It's because both episodes are on the same tape, and the picture on the front is Ezri with that massive rifle ;)
Guess I'm going to have to watch Chimera again now then :)

Could have been as corny as hell, fortunately not though :)
Phillip Culley - May 10, 2004 05:00 PM (GMT)
I can see what you mean about the season getting better - I'm up to 'Death Knell' today, which is another great episode!
I think I've done well here by not reading ahead, and so (with a few exceptions, like 'Heroes'), I've not been spoilt with story details, so the potential collapse of the Tau'ri / Jaffa / Tok'ra alliance did come as a surprise! I just hope it's not going to have any effect on the future appearances of Bra'tac and Jacob... :(
Crichton Kicks - May 10, 2004 05:03 PM (GMT)
Other than general spoilers I must admit I did quite well with season 7 as well. There was the obvious "Heroes" one, and I couldn't resist the "Lost City" ones, but the rest were a blank slate. DEATH KNELL I really enjoyed, I've always liked the Tok'ra story, and this is another absolutely rivetting twist in that particular arc. And, if you ever watched FIRST WAVE, Sebastian Spence who played Cade Foster appears as the chief Tok'ra :)

| Sebastian Spence who played Cade Foster appears as the chief Tok'ra |
Ah yes - Dalek - er - Delek :)
What was also a pleasent surprise was that the DVD blurb only really mentioned the 'Sam fighting for her life' storyline, so meaning I had no idea the Tok'ra and Jaffa were even major players in the story!
Crichton Kicks - May 10, 2004 05:15 PM (GMT)
I remember when I first saw it I just heard the Sam blurb as well. Not being a massive fan of her character arc I wasn't exactly enthused, so again, nice surprise when it turned out to be quite a pivotal Tok'ra/Jaffa story.
Phillip Culley - May 10, 2004 07:02 PM (GMT)
I think one of Season 7's problems is that it's been badly planned - over the last 4 episodes I've seen (Grace through to Death Knell), three of them have been Carter heavy, as well as two prior to those episodes (Space Race and Avenger 2.0).
I think it would have been better to hold Space Race and/or Avenger 2.0 for S8, and then spread out this Sam arc over the season?(Grace could have well done with being several episodes before Chimera, rather than just the two)
Crichton Kicks - May 10, 2004 07:08 PM (GMT)
The problem with Season 7, along with that point, which is well made, is that they're pushing more work onto fewer players. With RDA's limited role this season I have to say, once again, why oh why oh why get rid of Jonas ???? :(
Phillip Culley - May 26, 2004 12:45 PM (GMT)
Woo!

To: Phillip Culley Your order for "Stargate Vol. 36" has been posted.
Please allow 3-5 days for delivery. |
Day-by-day comments on 7x17 to 7x20 should be coming as of this weekend! :D
Crichton Kicks - May 26, 2004 01:01 PM (GMT)
I'll look forward to those :)
I've just sorted out 7x19 - 7x22 for Vic to watch, so there should be at least a few episodes fresh in my memory :)
Phillip Culley - May 31, 2004 09:21 PM (GMT)
And today I sat down and got through Heroes (both parts).
First, Part 1.
This one was... different, to say the least! What with the chopping and changing between filmed interviews and the interviews being filmed, as well as the 'cut it now' end-of-acts, it gave a very different feel to the episode. Another thing that stood out was the amount of time given to SG-13 while off-world - it was strange to see them taking bets on what they found, as well as whats-his-name- talking about his unborn baby.
Teal'c, of course, got the best scene with his silent approach to interviewing! :)
Part 2.
Had I not known of Frasier's death beforehand, I'm sure I would have been thinking if the dead team member was indeed O'Neill, or (more likely) the father to be snuffing it. Her death was well done - and with a wonderfully-played funeral. Shame this lead into the all American 'look how great we are' ending to the film.
An interesting thing here was the use of the 'Chekov's gun' rule (if you show a gun in your first act you will use it by the fourth, or something) - which did mislead me too - while indeed Daniel's camera did play an important part, I was sure the reporter was going to sneak off world, especially after his talks with the technicial telling him about the iris, and moreso when he was talking about a manual iris override. Oh well, it's nice to be surprised :)
It was nice to see Bob Picardo pop in too - although the 'yet another NID-type guy' is beginning to bore me now....
It's strange to see how much this season has changed for the very bland early episodes, into something awfully good! :)
Crichton Kicks - May 31, 2004 09:36 PM (GMT)
I must admit I loved HEROES.
The first part is interesting enough but if like me you knew was to happen in part 2 you were really only watching it to pave the way for the second part. It was certainly a decent episode in it's own right though, and Saul Rubinek put in a superb performance. Over the course of the two episodes you start off really hating the guy and everything he's trying to do, and like you I was convinced he'd be going offworld and would more than likely lead to the untimely death of said character. The second part, in the main was beautifully done, and with the loss of the speech aside at the end it's hard to see how they could have done it any better.
Note to Trek: when killing major charaters off, this is how to do it.
