| The crew discovers a mysterious, ancient artifact in hyperspace. |
Hmm, I'd never watched this before, despite owning it for an eternity, but I quite enjoyed it. I found the first half quite slow, but there were still some interesting bits and pieces going on.
First off, bloody troublemakers, those Vorlons <_<
I love the elevator scene between Zack and Lyta, even if it drags on a bit too long, it manages to be cringe-inducingly funny. Poor old Zack  It fits in nicely with him helping her to sort out her quarters in the series proper, bringing the pizza etc.
Another great elevator scene with Ivanova and Vir, too (I actually think every scene with Vir in is a winner, but that's another matter  ).
Good to see Deuce again, very nice touch. The special effects are eye-poppingly good
I also like that it touches on where the jump gate technology came from, but it still doesn't go into enough detail for me  :ph43r:
Where it fell down a bit for me is in that it never really seems to fully develop its ideas. In his intro, JMS says something along the lines of wanting to make an all out scarefest. Now that would've been great, but I think it's a missed opportunity. We see the alien city frequently, and it looks fantastic, but I really wanted them to actually go there. Also, I would've found it far more ominous if we'd known exactly what those things were that were on the ships coming through the gate, and also if they'd been given a bigger reason other than wanting to exterminate all other life. And why was there one inside the gate?
By far the creepiest scene was Lyta's vision of walking through all the corpses being stalked by something. I would've loved to have seen that vision develop further.
Also, as soon as Lyta started having visions why didn't she go straight to Sheridan before they took control completely? Was it because of her argument with Sheridan in Epiphanies? And why didn't anyone else, especially Zack, wonder what was wrong with her? And why didn't either Sheridan or Delenn react to all the writing on the walls of her quarters?
I reckon there was enough dead time in the first half of the film for them to have cut stuff out and addressed at least some of these issues :ponder:
Despite all that, still enjoyable, and the battle at the end is brilliant
I've never been too impressed with this one to be honest. You mentioned the padding, and that's exactly what a lot of it is. You can well imagine JMS just dusting off one of the ideas rejected for the show itself as either too expensive, or brushed aside to make way for some arc-heavy episodes. Essentially this movie could probably have been done (on a slightly higher budget albeit) in 45 minutes as an episode of the show. Pacing-wise that would probably have made it better.
The Lovecraftian tones (ever so subtle honest!) are satisfyingly creepy, but I'd agree, they never went far enough for my money.
Disappointing, but still considerably better than River of Souls!!

My thoughts exactly, especially seeing as everything happens in the last 25 minutes
