This September: Original Unaltered Trilogy on DVD May 03, 2006
Fans can look forward to a September filled with classic Star Wars nostalgia, led by the premiere of LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game and the long-awaited DVD release of the original theatrical incarnations of the classic Star Wars trilogy. In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie and, as bonus material, the theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983.
This release will only be available for a limited time: from September 12th to December 31st. International release will follow on or about the same day. Each original theatrical version will feature Dolby 2.0 Surround sound, close-captioning, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish for their U.S. release. International sound and subtitling vary by territory.
"Over the years, a truly countless number of fans have told us that they would love to see and own the original version that they remember experiencing in theaters," said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts and Senior Vice President of Lucasfilm Ltd. "We returned to the Lucasfilm Archives to search exhaustively for source material that could be presented on DVD. This is something that we're very excited to be able to give to fans in response to their continuing enthusiasm for Star Wars. Topping it off with a new interactive adventure makes September 12 a red-letter day for Star Wars fans."
That's also the day fans will be able to experience the LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game, the action-packed sequel -- filled with tongue-in-cheek humor -- to one of the best selling video games of 2005. To see the trailer to the new game from LucasArts and TT Games, click here!

 Didn't see that one coming - Lucas and his "No, they'll never be released", just so everyone would buy the bollocksed up special editions  <_<
No, I'm never happy :ph43r:

I will be getting this for my Grandsons
Aitch,

I wouldn't get this on principle now anyway. In any event, the "Greedo shooting first" scene aside, I'm not that bothered. I'll stick with the original versions.

I would be tempted for Star Wars as I hate with a fiery passion the extra bits tacked on. In the other two the additions don't jar so much.

 Poor choice of words
The only further editions I'd consider are the ones that take Jar Jar out of the prequals altogether.

It's interesting you should say that - the special edition of ESB is the one that jars most with me, mainly because of the totally unnecessary footage inserted of Vader returning to his ship during the otherwise thrilling escape from Cloud City at the end - I find it totally throws the pacing off, and it ruins John Williams' marvellous Hyperspace score :snooty:
In the end I copied my laserdisc versions of the originals onto dvd, but there's no doubting I will get these ones and allow Lucas to laugh maniacally as he claims another marketing victory over me

I hope you realise that in all likelihood the quality of these original unaltered versions will probably be of much lower quality than the current DVDs. It's doubtful that they will be cleaned up to the same extent as what's already available. I also wouldn't mind betting that at a later date the original versions will be cleaned up properly and re released on DVD/high-definition.
I'm going to stick with what I have I can't see the point in downgrading to a stereo mix and lower picture quality. I'll wait for them to be re released after they have been remastered to a higher standard. :)

:ermm: to buy the original version of "return of the jedi" ... just to have the last scene, luke watching the "ghosts" of joda, obi wan and anakin with the original actor not the younger version :ponder:
star_fury - May 5, 2006 03:28 PM (GMT)
I almost forgot don't forget that next year is the 30th anniversary of Star Wars so don't be surprised if they re release them again in some super-duper box-set or completely remastered the original unaltered versions of the original trilogy.
have a good weekend all.
