Title: Eleventh Movie Delay

Taken from Trektoday;

QUOTE
A "classic case of Hollywood regime change" doomed Eric Jendresen's script for an eleventh Star Trek feature film, the writer said, blaming new management for shelving Star Trek: The Beginning.

"A project is greenlighted by one regime, and by the time it's delivered, there's a coup d'etat," Jendresen told Sy Fy Portal. He explained that the replacement of Paramount's David DeLine with Gail Berman after the announced CBS-Viacom split and Paramount reorganization had brought new priorities for the franchise.

The Beginning, explained Jendresen, was meant to fill the "huge void" in Star Trek canon between the end of Star Trek: Enterprise and the beginning of the original series picks up. During that era, the United Federation of Planets came together to fight the Romulans. "The notion was to do a prequel to the original series and fill that void with, ostensibly, a trilogy," added Jendresen. "Three films, which all would deal with Kirk's progenitor, a man by the name of Tiberius Chase."

Jendresen, who won an Emmy for Band of Brothers, said that he wanted to explore the causes of the Romulan war. But the project was put aside by the new management. "Essentially, what's being said is true...this is 'dead' because it's not moving forward," he noted, saying that in Hollywood a film has to keep moving through the production cycle or it is considered dead.

"There is a producer at Paramount who has been championing this and the notion that we have the opportunity to plug the gap with this trilogy," he added, saying that the idea was to find a concept that would bring new fans to the franchise as well as keeping current Star Trek fans happy. He did not know when any further developments might occur.

There's a movie coming, honest! Look at the latest story we've found where someone involved with it is making excuses for why it's not coming just yet...

So, where have I seen the idea of a trilogy of movies acting a a prequel to a previously-broadcast series before? :)

Although I really don't see how this is going to keep Trek-fans happy - I've got the general consensus we're all bored of the franchise (Enterprise-worshippers aside), and no matther whatever Paramount pull out of their arse, the bitter taste of Voyager, Enterprise and Star Trek Nemesis is still lingering....

QUOTE

Well, no-one cares if Berman or Braga is championing it :)

Cynical, moi? :ph43r:

Crichton Kicks - April 19, 2006 12:13 AM (GMT)
The impression I get is that there's no movie coming for a few years yet, and when it does it'll probably be a testing of the waters.

Trek fans generally are smart enough to realise what's needed, and that isn't more of the same thank you very much. At a bare minimum neither Berman or Braga can be anywhere near the project when it eventually does appear.

The ideas mentioned above for the trilogy don't sound too bad. It's just a shame that they're exactly what we should have gotten from Enterprise

C4 teletext ( page 311 ) has news that JJ Abrams ( Alias, Lost, the new Mission Impossible film ) is directing the next Star Trek film. :)

The script is by Orci and Kurtzmann (sp ? ) who did some of the Alias scripts and the new MI film.

I`m in spoiler-phobe mode, since there are only 13 eps of Alias left, ( it just returned to air in the US on Wednesday ) and I don`t want to go looking on the internet for news and spoil on an ep. we haven`t seen here , so I don`t know if there`s any more info out there.

God, I hate this idea. Yet another prequel. Will do for TOS what phantom menace did for star wars.

Thanks for the clicky thing. :)

I don`t mind the idea - for any film - but for a Trek film ? <_<

I don`t care how much make-up they use, I can`t see Shatner and Nimoy playing students. :innocent:

Seems like another goodnews/bad news thing.

Good news: Abrams is doing it

Bad news: It's freaking Starfleet Academy.

I think this is make or break for Trek - it's either going to save the franchise, or be the final nail in the coffin. After all, if this fails, then it proves that Star Trek is completely finished...

prophecy girl - April 22, 2006 07:40 AM (GMT)
it will be done at one point but they will probably make us wait to death just to make sure there will be enough audience ............ but even with JJ abrams .... can we be sure they will bother with a "honest" plot/story/script :ermm:

Hippy - April 22, 2006 08:27 AM (GMT)
Doesn't sound bad to me but not sure how many non-trek fans it will pull in

If it's written well and has some decent actors in it imo it's quite a decent story :)

Perhaps B&B could come onboard and ruin it :ph43r: :fear:

Well if it hasn't got Wil Wheaton in it I'm sold......

Kirk and Spock frat parties?? :lmao:

Wonder if it will involve Kirk cheating on the Kobayashi Maru simulator??

And who to play Kirk and Spock??? Hmmm...I can't think of anybody coming to mind?

jamiearmour - April 24, 2006 08:32 PM (GMT)
I don't care who's making it. The Starfleet academy idea was terrible when it was first suggested soooo many years ago (I can clearly remember slating the idea several times on the beeb boards  )

The only way it could have even a slim chance of w**king is if they dump the idea of Kirk and Spock at the Academy, and have an entirely new cast of characters. Even then, the chances of it being a success would be limited, it'd be Dawson's crack or the O.C. in space :weird: :weird: :fear: :x

An update from Trektoday;

QUOTE
J.J. Abrams, who will be producing the upcoming eleventh Star Trek film, refused to comment on whether rumours that it would deal with Kirk and Spock at Starfleet Academy were accurate and even suggested that he might not be helming the film himself.

"The whole thing was reported entirely without our cooperation," said Abrams to Empire. "People learned that I was producing a Star Trek film, that I had an option to direct it, they hear rumours of what the thing was going to be and ran with a story that is not entirely accurate."

Abrams added that those involved in the production had "made a pact not to discuss any specifics" of the story. StarTrek.com had claimed that the story would center around Kirk and Spock's first meeting and their first adventure together in space. Empire noted that Abrams is a fan of the original series and quoted him as saying, "Those characters are so spectacular. I just think that...you know, they could live again."

StarTrek.com had cited Daily Variety and "sources at Paramount Pictures" in their statement that Abrams would direct as well as produce the upcoming eleventh feature film. Abrams, who is directing MI3 - the first film to utilise the soundstages at Paramount long reserved for Star Trek series from The Next Generation through Enterprise - had spoken briefly months ago about his ambition to be involved in a Star Trek movie to Now Playing Magazine.

"I will happily get involved in any new incarnations of anything that Leonard Nimoy was involved in. And that’s all I'll say about that," Abrams declared. Pressed about whether he would only be interested in Star Trek if Nimoy were personally involved, Abrams replied, "I think he's too busy doing those commercials now."

Burk: Team Abrams On Trek XI

Lost executive producer Bryan Burk told SCI FI Wire that he will be part of the team developing a proposed 11th Star Trek movie, along with Lost co-creators Damon Lindelof and J.J. Abrams, who will direct. Abrams' longtime writing colleagues Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who co-wrote Abrams' Mission: Impossible III, will also be involved.

Burk said that he will be an executive producer of Trek XI. "We're all very excited," Burk said in an interview at "Destination: L.A. 2," a fan charity event in Glendale, Calif., over the weekend. But Burk declined to discuss details of the movie: "We actually have this thing where we're just not talking about it outside of ... us right now. And to say I'm excited is the understatement of the [year]. ... It's going to be pretty great."

Burk also dismissed earlier rumors that the movie would center on Spock and Kirk's first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their subsequent early adventures. "I can tell you that that article leaked out prematurely, so there's no formal statement made from any of us, other than we all couldn't be more excited about it," he said.

Burk also smiled when asked if Abrams' longtime friend and frequent star Greg Grunberg would appear in the Trek movie, as either a Klingon or a member of the Federation. "First of all, there's no way Greg Grunberg knows what the Federation is," Burk said with a laugh. But, he added: "When is Greg Grunberg not in a project that we [do]?"

Will MATT DAMON get beamed up? Could happen. I‘m told J.J. ABRAMS is very interested in casting the Oscar-winning Damon as a young Captain Kirk in the upcoming ‘Star Trek‘ movie that he‘s directing and producing. He‘s so interested that he‘s apparently already sought support from the original Kirk, WILLIAM SHATNER. "Shatner gave his blessing," my source says. "J.J. got his approval." Damon first popped up in Trekkie circles as soon as the Abrams-‘Star Trek‘ deal was announced. Rumor had it that the new movie would center on Kirk and Spock‘s early days at a space academy. "J.J. wants Damon as Capt. Kirk," my source reports. "He really loves the idea."

Greg Grunberg—a longtime friend of writer/director J.J. Abrams, who has been hired to helm the proposed 11th Star Trek film—told SCI FI Wire that he and Abrams have joked about giving Grunberg a cameo role—and he also dropped a tantalizing hint about the film's possibly youthful characters.

"Yeah, we joked about that," Grunberg said in an interview on the set of his upcoming NBC SF series Heroes in Hollywood, Calif., on Aug. 23. "It's the old 'You're too old!' And i'm like, 'I'm too old? What does that mean?' And he won't tell me anything else. And I'm like, you know, 'Come on!'"

The cryptic comment could have something to do with rumors that Abrams' new take on Trek, which he's developing with his Mission: Impossible III screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, would deal with the first meeting of a young James T. Kirk and Spock at Starfleet Academy or some other academy-set storyline. Or it could be a red herring. (Abrams and his fellow producers have maintained strict silence about the sequel film's premise or story.)

In any case, casting Grunberg in a role wouldn't be unprecedented: Grunberg has appeared as a cast member, supporting player or cameo performer in almost all of Abrams' TV series and films, going back to Felicity and including Alias, Lost and M:I III.

"He's going to find something for me," the genial Grunberg said. "We joked about that, with Bob and Alex and J.J. We were all out, and I said, 'Look, if you think I'm going to sit through eight hours of makeup for two lines, forget it.' And Bob goes, 'Oh, no, you will.' And I'm like, 'Yeah, well, I guess will.' But hopefully they'll give me something."

Like what, a Klingon? "I want to be a bad guy!" Grunberg said. "It would be great to have some great role. But people are coming out of the woodwork. Amazing actors are coming out from everywhere calling J.J. and saying, 'I want to be in this movie!' ... So, yeah, we'll see."

Nimoy, Shatner In Trek 11?

Leonard Nimoy, who played Mr. Spock in the original Star Trek series, told Jam Movies that he has been contacted by Paramount about his possible involvement in the upcoming 11th Star Trek film, being directed by J.J. Abrams.

Nimoy told the site: "The head of production at Paramount called my agency to tell them about this project, and they are aware of [William Shanter]'s and my contribution to the franchise, and they'd like us to know they might want some involvement. It was all very, very general. They might possibly want Bill and I to set up the story as a flashback. But that's just conjecture on my part."

It has been rumored that the film would deal with the first meeting of a young Spock and James T. Kirk at Starfleet Academy, but neither Abrams nor screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orc have confirmed speculation about the premise or storyline of the sequel film.
