Title: Eureka

Sky One has picked up the basic and free TV rights to air new sci-fi drama Eureka in the UK.
The show, starring Coupling's Colin Ferguson and Ally McBeal's Greg Germann, is set in a seemingly ordinary town, Eureka. However, the picturesque hamlet is actually a community of scientific geniuses assembled by the government to conduct top-secret research.
The series is currently in production in Vancouver and will air on the US Sci-Fi Channel in July before making its UK premiere later this summer.
"Eureka injects the small town America of Northern Exposure and the suspense of Twin Peaks with a twist of X-Files' science fiction," said David Smyth, Sky One's head of acquisitions, drama and comedy. "This series is a welcome addition to Sky One's US drama output and on the strength of the pilot we're confident that it will find a dedicated fan base in the UK."

It's on Sci-Fi so it may have a decent chance of survival.
I've watched the first couple of episodes. It's alright. Not brilliant, but not bad either. Did just about enough to keep me watching so far.

It's in my programme planner to record

The advert for it looked promising.

My tv guide describes it as a cross between Northern Exposure and Twin Peaks  Although I note it's actually called A Town Called Eureka in the trailers

Echoes of when the Beeb changed Roswell to Roswell High
I'd agree with the Northern Exposure/Twin Peaks reference, but it's got elements of The X Files and The Outer Limits thrown in there as well.

I found it mildly amusing, but made the mistake of watching it "live" on Sky so had to sit through endless ad breaks which made it all a bit
little pixie - August 3, 2006 11:38 AM (GMT)
I enjoyed it - thought it was light, entertaining stuff. Hope they keep up the level of special effects, it looked like they spent some money on them. :)

I liked it too  Looks like it could be a lot of fun

I thought it was great and had a few surprises in terms of actors, that bloke who was in Terminator 2 and in Smallville as some professor bloke (sorry haven't seen past season 2 Smallville and plan to rewatch 1-2 and watch 3 and 4 on DVD).
Also that bloke from Ally Mcbeal, the head honcho. Overall I thought it was quirky, funny and with some drama. I think really it is more of a comedy than a drama so I don't expect some serious show in the next few weeks, just something which is a bit of fun.

Thought it was ok but nothing special.
Did they actually explain how the little boy knew how to complete the formula ? And did they refer back to the fact that the US Marshall & his daughter pasted themselves at the start ? Either I wasn't concentrating ( which is highly likely  )or it wasn't that tightly scripted.
Crace_Damar - August 11, 2006 01:49 AM (GMT)
I'm hoping this series will do really well, I've watched the first 4 eps and so its shapeing up quite nicely. I've noticed quite a lot of people that have been guests on stargate sg1.

As for people from other shows...we also had 'Max Headroom' playing the hunter chappie, in Episode 1........

Ok...finally got around to watching last weeks ep....the memory loss one.....
Not a bad story, but, was it just me or was this weeks lacking the humour of the previous eps....? :ponder:
Scary thing is I'm sure I've seen recently that the U.S military have actually been trying to develop something along those lines.......a bit like an EMP takes out electrical equipment, one pulse over enemy troops wouldnt kill them, but would make them unable to remember how to operate complicated modern weapons systems.

Nice to see the Eureka sheriff’s department is getting some of the technology, Doom games had a BFG (Big F***ing Gun), the Eureka sheriff’s department has gone one better with a BMFG in the gun rack ?

Ok...now we are getting silly ammounts of ex SG1 actors appearing in Eureka....... :o

Anyone else notice the Buffy referances in the last two eps.......
Two weeks ago Jack threatened to let Fargo's colleagues know he had a Sarah Michelle Gellar doll in his desk.....
And last week, when Fargo was explaining the brain/computer interface to Stark he said something about.....'It takes a while to tune into your brain and what you want to see....when I was first testing it, it kept connecting me to Buffy fan sites'....

I see a new item that says EUREKA has been renewed for a second season. Evidently, it gets good audience numbers. I haven't seen it since it's on a cable channel I don't get. And those cable channels usually have only 13 episodes a season -- probably all their budgets can afford.

Sci-Fi in particular have tended to go down the '20 episodes per season' route over the past couple of years with shows like SG1, Atlantis and BSG.
I'm quite surprised that they haven't given Eureka a 20 episode run next season, given that they've cancelled SG1. Although, don't Sci-Fi have another new show next season, The Dresden Files?
laughitupfuzzball - October 15, 2006 10:55 AM (GMT)
I'm catching up on this show now as I missed most weeks on sky, it's growing on me although we've seen most of the themes before X Files, Outer Limits etc the quirky characters make it fun to watch :)
Bill The Bloodless - October 15, 2006 11:19 AM (GMT)
I thought it was good, not the best thing on tv but quite enjoyable. :)

There is a new show called DRESDEN FILES on this lineup, James. And one called THE LOST ROOM. I also see that they've bought up rights to rebroadcast THRESHOLD and the new DR WHO. So they're still spending money.
I wonder how the cable channel will fare with the major networks finding some success in the genre. :ponder:
Crichton Kicks - October 15, 2006 10:28 PM (GMT)
I'd imagine it's a lot cheaper to buy the rights to broadcast a particular show rather than fund its production. It's still a far cry from Sci-Fi's pre SG1/Farscape days.
Up until recently Sci-Fi's success in the field has been very much built around its space borne/themed shows; Farscape, SG1, Atlantis, BSG. With Eureka, and soon Dresden Files, it looks to be moving away from this slightly, into areas of sci-fi that are already covered by both other cable networks, and the main players.
Although Eureka's got pretty good numbers this season I'm not so sure this is a great idea on their part. Thus far they've filled a niche in the market, going forward that might not necessarily be the case soon.

Thoroughly enjoyed the final 2 episodes  This whole show has been great fun to watch :D
